According to Amex's BVG guidelines: Any items that are purchased from a store that already has an established lowest price guarantee program will not be covered under Best Value Guarantee.

Has anyone ever had trouble applying a BVG to something purchased at say, CompUSA or Best Buy?

No. I do it all the time.

I was once asked if BB had a pm policy. I was honest and said: "Yes, 30 days, and they don't pm internet companies", which is what I was doing. It was also past the 30 days of BB policy, but within the 60 days of Amex BVG. Their response: "OK. Let's process that claim for you."

Btw, Loricariidae, are you into Plecostomus? Just guessing by the name. I have some really nice ones in my 180 gallon aquarium.

Well, I have a Platinum Cash Rebate card. You do NOT have to pay the balance off at the end of the month, I have a $3000 balance to prove it. Also, there is no annual fee for my card, either. My Platinum card is associated with a Costco membership, which should explain not having to pay a fee. This is a heckuva deal, I may be making my first claim soon.

iow, this card would make the deal even better. anyone care to share how they got theirs?

In my attempts thus far to try and apply for that card, it doesn't show up in the list of cards you can apply for. Maybe I'll give AMEX a call and see if it's still available.

P.S. Hey DefRef, the card atac posted about is the Platinum Cash Rebate Card WHICH HAS NO ANNUAL FEE (as clearly listed in the URL supplied in the original message). The card you talked about though (the American Express Platinum Card) does indeed have a steep annual fee. ($395 now, huh? Used to be $300).

*EDIT* You can also see the American Express Platinum Cash Rebate Card at this URL:

What number do you call to do the BVG? What information do you need, and what are the requirements, I have a gold card. What do you say to them exactly? How long do you have to call them within?

I wish I had an AMEX! If anyone out there (with excellent refs, of course) can buy one for me, I would be willing to pay $15 or $20 above cost for it. PM me!

Here's an Amex card that has NO ANNUAL FEE, includes BVG, comes w/ an introductory 0% APR, lets you pay your balances off over time, AND CAN ACTUALLY BE APPLIED FOR:
American Express Optima® Platinum Card®

If I'm ultimately unable to get the American Express® Platinum Cash Rebate Card, I'll go for the Optima Platinum Card.

*UPDATE*
After 4 phone calls to Amex, and after spending what seemed like an eternity on the phone with the 4th Amex CSR, I'm supposed to receive in the mail an application for the American Express® Platinum Cash Rebate Card (it'll take 5-7 business days). I asked the CSR to send me several applications (for family members). If the application I receive is generic enough for anybody to use, I'll scan it and throw it up on a web-site for anybody interested in applying. For those who want to try going through the hell I just went through (getting Amex to mail you an application), feel free to call American Express at 1-800-678-0745. Explain that the card is clearly listed on-line at home3.americanexpress.com/cards/benefits but can neither be applied for on-line nor by phone.

BVG - Best Value Guarantee, check out the american express website for more info. it's under card benefits

as for waiting another 60 days to see if the price drops, im happy with getting this drive for $136 (possible $116 because of outpost overcharging me). i think waiting to try and get this drive any cheaper could be both hazardous (i might miss my date) or time consuming.

CSR just told me that they're no longer offering the American Express Platinum Cash Rebate Card. she said it's discontinued that's why they no longer have it available in their system.
I guess the Optima Platinum Card is the best one to get now....

The 3rd of 4 CSRs I spoke with gave me that same line of crap too; however, since the first 2 CSRs seemed convinced that the card was still available (even though they couldn't figure out how to let me apply for it), I kept trying. Fortunately on my 4th call, CSR #4 somehow determined that she could send me an application for the American Express Platinum Cash Rebate Card. If I indeed receive it, if it's legit, and if it's a generic enough application for ANYBODY to apply for, I'll scan it and throw it up on a web site for the rest of you. If not, then do as I suggested (and as you re-stated), apply for the Optima Platinum Card.

Note: My call w/ CSR #4 lasted a good 45 minutes to an hour (most of that time was spent on hold while she looked into the matter).

Thanks TheDiggler! I followed your lead and got a csr to send me the application by mail! I should receive it within 5 to 7 business day. Question: Is this the best AEX to get because of the BVG and 5% cash rebate?

Does the shell citi card has BVG too?

RE: American Express Platinum Cash Rebate Card

I called four times - first 3 times I either got fowarded to wrong phone numbers or people who did not know anything about the card.

The 4th person I talked to said the card was invitation only and that I could apply for it :-(

Maybe I will try again later...

>>I can't believe they still have BVG...they can't possibly be making any money off the BVG-users. They must really be raping the people who don't pay off their balance...

I am on my 6th $1000 from AMEX. 3 different cards across 2 years. They simply haven't a clue.

BVG is a pricematching service for some credit cards. I really dislike these posts, because most people don;t have BVG, and these threads clutter up the forum while only a few people can take advantage of them

Well, what does "BVG" stand for? I do have an Amex card, but never heard of "BVG".
