Thank for the generic cartriges link.... Here the cartriges are about $2 cheaper than Printpal where I get cartriges for my Pixma ip4000.

I think I'm going to get this so my wife can scan and print wirelessly from her laptop instead of bugging me everytime she wants to scan something for her scrapbooking or craft projects (she has her own little 4x6 photo printers for her picture printing neeeds).

Yes, a complete set of Brother-branded ink.

The print quality isn't really "low" on these units. The black is plenty crisp; I just wouldn't want to print photos on it (even though it would appear to be built for doing just that).

The software is pretty brainless...you just have to let it install completely and not be tempted to hit "Next" or anything while it installs new devices. LOL.

I used generic inks in my canon printer for a while, but they eventually clogged the print heads. I bought higher quality ink as well, and it seemed to work fine until about the third cartridge change. My $99 Samsung laser printer, on the other hand, has been a real work-horse, printing out hundred of pages. My next color printer will for sure be a laser.

I've had to replace 3 brother printer in the last year for 2 different people . All fairly new. The game seems to be give you a printer that eats ink. Get you to buy a few cartriges. Have the printer fail but give an error that makes you think you need more ink so you buy one last cart. It still doesn't work so you go buy a new printer and thew new brother is on sale so you get it but of course your old ink carts. don't fit so off you go again.

how do I trick the printer to keep printing black even if the color cartridge is empty? I miss my Canon MF50 AIO machine. I just press the "resume" button and it will go on printing even if all the color are empty. I have not seen any new printer/AIO machine does that

If you pull the cartridges out, there is a small tab that slides into a slot on the printer. There is an optical "float" in there that the printer uses to read the ink level. If you cover that thing with electrical tape, you should be golden.

Note that this MAY damage your printer. If the print heads are thermal, they will burn themselves out when the ink finally runs dry. Then, it will never print color again. Just so you understand this.

This unit I think can scan up to 25 pages. It will convert it to one PDF file. The size depends on the resolution you select to scan it at. It is included in the software.

as a sidenote, megatoner's free shipping policy is pretty shady. i don't know how they can have a huge 'free shipping' icon next to every ink and have the restriction "free if you buy over $49". you have to email them to find out if you get the free shipping. nowhere during the checkout process will it show that you qualified for the free shipping.
