I walked into BB two hours after they opened and was lucky enough to get the very last stick of RAM and the very last Verbatim/Lite-On CD-RW with a serial number that was all digits. There were plenty of the drives with the other serial numbers. I went with a friend, and each of us bought one of the items and used a 10% off coupon, so I got 10% off both. :music: :wine:

I'll bet if you add how much AT'er & FW'ers have tied up in rebates, it would be over $1,000,000

ha, too true. i've scored some major deals lately (made a profit of $125 on the cc western digital hd) but now i'm waiting on ~$500 worth of rebates, one of which i may have just blown 'cause i missed the postmark date! why do i do this?! damn you at hot deals ...

and speaking of rebates, the pc2700 ddr seems pretty hot. is this reasonable quality stuff?

I grabbed one today ... I ended up with an asus drive. Is that bad? I may have to try to scope out the other best buys to find a lite on one. Either way, I'm keeping the asus branded drive, but I'll try to snag a lite on one.

I ended up spending $122 today (cdrw- $70, 100 pack of cds- 31, 50 cds- 13) but ~$95 in rebates is pretty good.

I bought the Verbatim today also. Yup it is Asus inside. I used the "buy a CDRW drive and get a $10 gift card coupon" so after all the rebates and a $10 gift card, the final cost is ~$5. Not bad.

Been testing it and so far I sucessfully made 20 on-the-fly VCD copy at 48x (most likely limited by the blank CDR), all within ~2min 10sec.

Ran Nero CD Speed and all tests are good. Good stuff.

Anandtech actually has a review on this drive, but I think this one has some update. Some of the test results like seek time are better (far better actually) than the one tested by Anandtech.

Yes, tray still not pressure sensitive.
Yes, still only has 2MB buffer.
No, not that loud IMO.

Where did you get that coupon. Is that the one that expired at the end of March that was in the magaizes back in the winter?? If so, I actually did use a couple of those coupons after the expiration too.

No, it is one of the perfer customer coupons. Those perfer customer coupons vary a bit from person to person sometime. Mine is "SAVE $100 INSTANTLY" on notebook where my friend actually got the CDRW drive coupon. He gave that to me.

Picked up a 52x Burner at Best Buy in Vegas today. Out of about 15 on the shelf, only 2 were lite-on. Been needing to update my old 12x burner. Stupid me almost walked out without the rebate forms. I'm happy at $15 for this.

Hehe, I got in on this one too. First, I bought the Verbatim drive for $69.99 and got the free $10 gift card. The majority of the ones on the shelf were NOT the Lite-On drives so check numbers carefully if you want a Lite-On. I only saw two with the all numeric serial numbers (thanks for reposting the serial # info, Harvey . I then asked if they had any of the Kingston memory left - I was told that they sold out within two hours yesterday. So while I was looking at some other stuff it dawned on me to ask if they had any open box memory. Well to my suprise, there was a *new* 512 stick in the basket with the open box stuff. I grabbed it and used the other 10% off coupon I had, which brought the price down to $62.99. If your local store is out too, be sure to ask about the open box memory. Even if you find an open box stick, buy it. I've purchased several sticks in the past and so far all have worked fine. Next I used the $10 gift card to get the MS Internet keyboard for $19.99. Finally I got the MS mouse for $26.99. So my total cost for all items after rebates is $48.96. Not bad I'd say. Good luck and happy hunting.

Sweeeet. I used your 12 digit rule, saw they had other serials, and grabed a 12 one.
Full on Lite-On. I even used the extra 10% coupon thy had mailed out last week.
Not a bad drive for $12.95 after taxes.

Thanks. Here's some info from short thread on CD Freaks:
Word has it boxes that have a 12 digit serial with no letters are rebadged lite-ons the others are asus actually the liteys arent even rebadged and are detected as lite-ons and retain the original lite-on label / sticker.

The Verbatim (Lite-On) with a Verbatim sticker has three barcodes (on the contents sticker, on the side of the box) and serial # 2112239013243.

The Verbatim (Lite-On) with a Lite-On sticker has two barcodes (on the contents sticker, on the side of the box) and serial # 232307004110.

I picked up the Kingston PC2700 ram today and it has the following markings:

W942508CH-6
0317WI
424761800

A quick google search identified the chips as being made by Winbond with this data sheet. Anybody familiar with the peformance of these chips?

Thanks.

No Lite-ons to be found, only Asus, so that's what i grabbed, since i figured it's got to be worth the $15.00 i'm paying for it AR...

how much worse is this than the Lite-on drives...what're the main differences?

the $30 rebate for the verbatim internal cdrw doesn't seem valid anymore.. at least through the link on the BB website, it says the $30 rebate expired 5/10 while the $25 rebate expires 5/31... anyone have any comments on this? will it work? or not?

I didn't read this thread but picked it up on Sunday anyway cuz I needed a new drive, and $15 = good deal. Serial # was 202306xxxxxx. It was indeed a Lite-on 52246s, as detected by XP. Updated to the latest lite on firmware no problem.

Now to RMA my Cendyne 40x drive (Accesstek) drive that was crap from day 1 and finally died. Hopefully I get a lite-on as a replacement. But, as long as the new drive works that'll be a bonus to have as a backup.

To answer my own question: The Asus sucks. The drive came with no drivers, and as a result, the only thing that will burn to it is JetAudio. Nero, which came with it, won't recognise it as a burner. Their website has no downloads for it, and emailing them gets you an autoresponse asking you to fill out a product feedback form on the CENDYNE website for help, which you can't do because the Cendyne product number is required, from a pulldown menu.

I think i'm returning this one.

To ww4397,
I got this info from a Japanese site:
It's by Twinmos (not Kingston), but the chips are the same: Winbond W942508CH-6 306WG. PCB is different (GB3-212B)
At 2-5-3-2, it does 210-220MHz at 2.6V-3.2V (this is very high...)
At 2-5-2-2, it does 177 at 2.6V, 187 at 2.9V, and 210 at 3.2V
I don't know how he could apply such high voltage, but at least it tells what is can do.

i tested at 177MHz, at 2-5-2-2 with 2.5V, and there are errors in MEMTEST. But as I stated in earlier post, it does 2-5-2-2 at 166 with 2.5 V with no problem.

Mine is Asus and I burn many CD's with Nero already. No, I'm not using the Nero Express came with. I use the lastest version downloaded from Nero web site.

Hi mickeymice,

Thanks for the reply and information. I like the fact that they are the same chips used on the Twinmos but, I'm having problems with it. I have a 8RDA+ mobo and when I set the BIOS to "Optimized Defaults" my machine crashes about 2 min's after booting. This doesn't happen with my K-Byte ram that has VT chips on it. At OC conditions I have not had the problem. I'm very concerend about the crashing because the mobo BIOS flash procedure calls for setting the BIOS to "Optimized Defaults" before flashing. If my machine is in an unstable state with those settings because of this memory, I am risking a bad flash, or worse, a dead mobo because of the bad flash.

I think this ram is going back to BB.

Alright, alright...I didnt' need it. didn't want it, but I'm a rebate ho so I bought the CDRW drive. 9 in stock in Burnsville, MN, 8 of which were Lite-Ons. My 8x4x8x Plextor has been rock solid, but time to put it in the kids PC. Picked up the $4 mouse as well, but forgot to check the RAM. BTW, LOTS of the verbatims at the Richfield, MN store too. Not the biga$$ store, but the little one off 66th st.
