Hey guys,

I think this is hot. Best Buy has the M6805 for $1249 after a $100 manufacturer MIR and $150 Best Buy MIR. This might be a YMMV because the BB website has it with only the manufacturer's rebate available. But, I purchased one yesterday in Aurora, CO and on the floor it had the two rebates. The BB rebate is good 5/9 - 5/15.

The best part is that you can get the model above it, the M6809 (which includes a dual-format DVD burner and a A-64-3200+) for $1349 after MIR. :-D This is what I'm planning on in about 2 or 3 weeks (hopefully it'll still be going on... they've turned the rebates on and off about 3 or 4 times the last two weeks... so there's hope ).

Oh yeah... and it has an 80GB HDD, too.

It's the same rebates, FWIW. Also, keep in mind that Best Buy runs different specials in the store than on their website (or so my experience has been).

Not sure if you can get both rebates... they both require you send in the original UPC code. Can anyone confirm this?

FYI. I bought this lappy 2 months ago and I quickly received both rebates that were in effect at that time. One check came from BB and one from eMachines. I'm happy

eMachines has had a horrible reputation in their desktops in the past. And when I say horrible, I mean horrible! Has this improved? How reliable are their laptops? This looks like a hell of a deal otherwise.

There's TWO UPC barcodes on the box (easily removed stickers too).

Mine hasn't crashed since I've had it. Even overclocking the CPU and video I haven't had a bit of trouble.

Gateway bought eMachines, and should honor the warranty.

The warranty would be from BB or CC where you buy it - not necessarily from the manufacturer

I've had it for about 6 weeks and could not be happier. I was just as skeptical as the next person about emachines, but it looks like they've turned things around with their notebook line. A co-worker purchased the M6809 and has been very happy with it, as well.

I am very happy with my M6805.
Unreal Tournament 2004 runs smoothly on it.

BTW, BestBuy's ExtendedWarranty also covers Battery and AC Adaptor.

Here's some misc. info I've turned up.

First, I can confirm this is YMMV - a Best Buy I visited in CT only provided the $100 manufacturer's rebate, like the website lists. A Best Buy in Worcester, Ma, however, does have the additional $150 Best Buy rebate in-store.

This laptop is NOT manufactured by e-machines. It is made by a taiwanese company (as most laptops are) known as Arima, model W730-K8 DTR.

As such, e-machines is not the only one who sells this notebook. Other resellers are listed here, under Arima. Most of them are overseas. One of the U.S. resellers is VoodooPC - except their m680 model starts at over $3000 and come with all the best hardware (7200 rpm drive, 1680X1050 display, 3400+ DTR, 9700 Pro 128MB, custom paint job). Another is AccessMicro, as the AI730.

The laptop is even available sans CPU (though the website says this is in stock, tech support told me it is NOT until 6/7/2004, like their complete system), or as a barebones. Drop in your own Hitachi 7k60 7200 rpm drive with a 3400+ DTR and watch it blow away most desktops!

For those of you saying that some stores aren't offering the $150 rebate, rebates for both the 6805 and 6809 are on Best Buy's site.

Here you go...

Unfortunately the $150 rebate on the 6809 seems to have expired yesterday... arrgg.
The one on the 6805 seems to have started (again) today.

Interesting... that accessmicro site posted above says the notebook can take 2 gigs of RAM but Best Buy's site says the 6805 and 6809 can only take a max of 1.25 GB. Hmm.

They assume that you won't open it up and remove the top to get at the internal RAM slot. If you do though, it can take another 1GB stick there.

If you add the 6805 to your shopping cart, you'll see a "Service Plan" link in your cart for a "3-year Service Performance" plan for $249.99.

For the 6809 the same plan is $299.99.

i just wanted to add that over the years dealing with computers, the most important issue with notebooks, probably even more important than the features of the notebook itself, is the warranty. i stress this to anyone who asks me for advice, apart from just telling them to go to dell.com

the problem is, desktop computer components can usually be replaced easily with a part from your favorite computer store, however a notebook's components are usually proprietary and are usually only distributed by the manufacturer, or whoever the manufacturer contracted to produce the component after they discontinue it. fixing the keyboard or replacing the lcd screen, whether it be a small dot or a tiny line, can cost up to or beyond $500 if not under warranty.

notebook warranties and the condition of the warranties (promptness, ease of warranty procedure - local pickup, in-home replacement, pre-paid shipping, etc.) are paramount. buyer beware. .02

good point - and I do not disagree on the principle - if the warranty were more affordable.

A $1200 lappy is likely worth only $750 or so after a year - it's kind of questionable to spend $250 to cover a $750 product. Dell for instance charges $169 for most notbook's extension to 3year mail in and sometimes has the 2 year mail in free or for $80 or so - a better proposition I think.

Moreover while some parts cannot be replaced easily, some of the more vulnerable ones (e.g. harddrive) can be removed and replaced by a technically savy individual.
