eMachines webite has two active rebates for the models mentioned here, one for them and one for BestBuy. Both expire July 28, 2004. Go here for a look. They're both for $100. So, if nothing else, there's a $100 rebate for a while. Seems to me the $150 rebate kicks in often enough where it's worth waiting for it if the week you plan on buying it's not in effect.

these $150 bestbuy rebates are usaully every other week or like a 3 week cycle... if you want the higher emachine laptop wait a week or two and that rebate should be back

I too am really looking at the 6809, especiall for $1349 !!! I will swing by a store tomorrow and play around with a display model to see how I like the screen.

It looks to be heavier than I had wanted (I want either A64, or centrino) but for a dvd burner, and 3200+ for under 1400, I can't beat that !

Let use know when the 6806 can be had for 1349 again!

I think it's actually $1399... my bad. But still an awesome deal! Good luck finding one in stores, tho. I believe they're selling like crazy and stores are having problems keeping them in stock. I know they're not in stock online... probably the same in the stores.

Does this laptop overheat after hours of intensive gaming? My compaq overheats like mad after like 40 minutes of playing Battlefield 1942. Mine is 1.6 p4 M with ati 7500 32mb video, when it starts to overheat, the computer starts to lag, and renders the game unplayable

eMachines offers extended warranties on their website. It looks like a 2 year is $109 and a 3 year is $189. I'm just not sure if this applies to notebooks purchased at BestBuy or ones purchased directly from eMachines.

I couldn't find driver patches or updates at eMachines site. Did I miss it? How does one get updated video drivers and such from these guys?

JandR.com describes the eMachines M6809 as: "ATI Mobility RADEON 9600 with 64MB of shared DDR RAM (shared with main RAM)"

Can someone please confirm whether the M6809 eMachines laptop has "shared" video memory? This is a deal breaker, since the M6805 does NOT have shared memory. I'd rather go with the 6805 if that is indeed the case.

My wifes 6805 is definitely discreet Radeon 9600with 64MB of memory, no shared memory. Has its own 64MB of high speed memory. IT plays Kight of the Old Rebublic with AA and AF perfectly. Every game I have played on this lappy is has been very smooth and fast. A very nice gaming lappy for sure. I highly doubt they would use the Radeon 9600 and then have it use slow shared memory. I am sure that description for the 6809 lappy is a typo.

Well I stopped by BB today after Lunch and had a look at the 6809. I was very impressed with what I saw. They have a rebate good through 5/22 that puts the 6809 @1399 AR. I will go back later this week and try to get the lame BB powerpoint presentation off, and play around with the actual desktop and find out if the widescreen and resolution will work for me.

I did do some psuedotyping on the keyboard and must say this is one of the better laptop keyboards I've ever used (I don't have much laptop experience though)!

I might try and get them to PM their warranty to the eMachines website. 299 is to much for a 3year, but 189 is much more manageable

If this keeps up I'll have a laptop at the end of he week :-D

Well, this site confirms 64MB Dedicated Video Memory on the M6809:

AMDZone.com

I'll feel better once someone who bought it can confirm this. Thanks!

I've read a couple of forum discussions where they discuss the shared vs. dedicated memory of the 680x emachines. Apparently it was accidentally posted even on emachines site that it was shared memory. Here's another discussion where someone confirms that the 6809 is dedicated just like the 6805/6805 :

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=318308&goto=nextoldest

and another good "FAQ" here

That last forum also has discussions about the 680x notebooks. I really am thinking about getting one now.

I know I'm completely missing it, but can someone provide a link to buy directly from emachines? If I can, I'm going to get it from Emachines. Hopefully, I won't have to pay tax and the cheaper price on the extended warranty makes the $150 MIR void. I'm not completely sure yet. I'm just going to have to add up the totals of each and see, but I should be ready to buy in about 2 or 3 weeks. Possibly sooner... heh.

Re: Extended Warranty
Print out the eMachines warranty and take it into Best Buy where they will pricematch it if you ask nicely. Actually they may reduce the price of the computer, which is even better (although it would be unethical if you did it intentionally, extended warrantys are 100% refundable in CA and if you NEEDED to get a refund your final cost on the laptop would be $110 lower.) Bestbuy reduced my purchase price by $110 when I bought their extended warranty.

Save more with Reward Zone:
Pay $9 to join Reward Zone (in-store only) and get about $70 worth of Bestbuy coupons back (equiv to cash in the store). I used all of these coupons in a single purchase to buy a 512MB stick of ram for the laptop (which was on sale, with a rebate, of course).

Re: Overheating
My M6805 has never overheated after hours of BF1942 (video settings maxed).

Re: Performance
My 3DMark 2K1 scores have been about 12,000 when overclocked. For a laptop, nuff said.

Re: Ram
The true capacity is 2 GB if you choose to take the thing apart to get to the hidden stick. Everything I have tried runs great with 768 MB.

Re: Video Ram and drivers
The mobile 9600 has dedicated video ram. Catalyst drivers can be used (sometimes you need a tweak) so you can always have the latest drivers.

You can get the Emachines warranty up to 60-90 days (don't remember) after purchase. You do not have to buy it from them to get the extended warranty. Anyone looking to get it w/o tax should look at JandR.

That's awesome. Can anyone provide a link? The question is this: is tax going to be more than $150? For me, I think it would be (the lovely 9.5% tax of TN), so I may just go through JR and then buy the warranty from eMachines. Plus, JR has it in stock... heh. Does anyone know where the link is to buy the extended warranty? Thanks!

About Emachines, reliability...

Emachines has gone through a "extreme" makeover these last few years. They are currently rated one of the HIGHEST in reliability and service.

You may have heard that Gateway recently aquired Emachines. In reality it is more of a merger with the CEO of Emachines is taking the reigns.

I have the laptop and it is great. CPU and video card can both be overclocked for a measureable performance boost if you so desire. Google "clockgen" and "atitool". My CPu is running great at 2005mhz and video card is close to 9600 pro turbo speeds.

As an added note about Emachines service:

The two times I've called support with questions, my call was picked up by a live operator in 17 and 20 seconds. Yes, they do have a recording that tells you how long you have been on hold.

Picked up a 6809 yesterday from best buy. both rebates are in effect. Tax in NJ was 6% or $99. I'll get the warranty from emachines. So far this machine is great. It's my first laptop since my Gateway Solo (original) with a Pentium 90 and 10.2 inch screen. I paid $4000 in 1995. Amazing what you can get these days.

Hella cool! This makes my choice much easier. I'm getting the M6809 with "dedicated" video memory.

Thanks!
