Whoa didn't realize there were so many West Burbers here
I went there a couple of days ago and they didn't have crap, Every time i go in a best buy I leave with a worse opinion of them.

Just be careful buying open box hardware, I can't count the times there has been either
1. The incorrect videocard in the box(a GF2mx instead of a GF3 TI 500).
2. a DOA GF4
3. CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP...

Remember that quite a few of the people that actually do think regular BB prices are a hot deal are actually TOUCHING this stuff before you....EWW>....

well, if you are concerned with the quality of the open box item you could do what I did. Buy an open box DVD player at one store. Buy the same DVD player NEW at another store....and return the open box item using the new receipt. You get a new player for an open box price. Obviously this doesn't work if there are missing items, only if you are concerned that the person who bought it originally may have damaged the unit itself.

That's also fraud. :|

Back in high school, I had a buddy who worked at best buy. I bought a vega 12" sub from them, returned it the next day, he marked it down 33% (he said that's as much as they're allowed to go) but didn't put it out front until I got there. I bought it for $135 (a good deal for best buy). YMMV on schemes like that.

Sometimes I wish people could figure out the difference between a Hot Deal and outright fraud.

While visiting my local Best Buy store today, I saw some "official" printed signs regarding the "open box" promotions:

Save and additional 10% off Open Box and Clearance items. Expires: 1/5/2003

The way it looks is that you can save an extra 10% off any open box item your purchase before the store closes tomorrow: Sunday 1/5/2003.

Be careful on this one. Obviously it is fraud, but if you are so inclined to do so anyway, make sure the box doesn't have a serial number on it. If it does and they don't match (and they actually check), you'll be screwed.

I checked out the Eastgate, OH BB and they only typically go 10-15% off. I got a 19" Trinitron KDS monitor for $299-$100(openbox)=$199 and they said the only reason they dropped the price that much was because it was a 3-yr old monitor that was just sitting on the shelf the entire time and the manufacturer's warranty (3-yr) had nearly already expired. It wasn't that awesome of a deal but not bad and I needed the monitor pretty badly, so I settled for it with the BB $30 3-yr replacement plan, so it worked for me.

My Open Box BB experience (YMMV, of course!):

Day after christmas:
Pronto Neo $100 (normally $200)

Today:
20GB Windows IPOD $332.00 ($230 after gift certificates and discount) Read more about it in my post under Brag and Moan....

Samsung DVD/CD-R combo: $60.00 after rebate.

Keep searching for those Open Box deals!

My Best Buy "Open Box" experience:

HP ZE4210 laptop:

Originally $999.99. The box was opened, but the laptop and accessories had never been removed from the box. The box didn't even have an "open box" price sticker on it. However, I got the salesman to give me the 10% open box price. Then, I pointed out the little sign that said "extra 10% off on open boxed and clearance items." He then wrote a tag up for me @ $799.99. I'm going back tomorrow to get a new receipt cut for me because they are offering $250 in rebates on this same laptop starting tomorrow. My "net" price: $549.99 (after rebates and before taxes.) Yippee!

My Best Buy open box experiences have been few and far between. I once got 4 digital video cameras that had been display models for $500, and then I got $150 back in rebates. I had to negotiate with the manager. 99.9% of the time they would not come down in price. I used to cruise Best Buy for good deals until I started reading these forums, now I get better deals by being in the know.

Thanks for the heads up on the open box holiday returns. I picked up the RelplayTV 5040 for $169.99 on Friday. The BB open box sticker stated the price was originally $199.99, but the price tag above the units stated $299.99 so I think that was simply a mistake. There was also a sign above the 5040 units stating that a $100 MIR was active. I asked the CSR at the customer service desk if the open box still qualifies and was told yes as long as the original UPC was still on the box. The original UPC was still on the box! The register printed two $50 MIRs. One goes to SonicBlue offer # 2597-T and the other goes to Best Buy rebate offer 32534. I inspected the unit to make sure every thing was there. All listed items were in the box and the unit did not look like it was ever removed fom the box. All of the accessory packages were still sealed. Just to verify the rebate eligibility on the open box item I called Sonic Blue customer support and was told that there was no problem with open box items. The CSR also told me there was another $50 rebate that SonicBlue was offering on this unit. The offer number is 2800-T. I asked if there were any restrictions about submitting the two SonicBlue rebate and the BB rebate and was told they don't care about any retailer specific offers as long as the original UPC is submitted with their offers. To sum it up, after the three $50 MIRs my net after taxes will be around $40. Not too bad!

I went to BB today and they told me the exta 10 percent off expired yesterday.

They had a Hughes E-86 HDTV reciever marked down to $429. I could of got it yesterday for about $389.

I guess I'll just wait another 6 months. Can't afford to save all the time.
