I have never seen a 50% off open box at any Best Buy in Atlanta unless the item had been on the shelf for over a month. Stuff in the three Best Buys that I go to *might* go for 10% or 15% off full price. In fact, it is normal and typical to see stuff with open buy stickers priced higher than the exact same item on sale sitting next to it in an unopened box.

I work at Bestbuy. This upcoming week is called.........(I forgot, was kinda sleepy at the morning meeting
). Well anyway, all returned items are being marked down 50% off to clear them all out within a week.

Does this special week start today? Or tomorrow?

And is that your Mission Statement, or Mission: Impossible???

I at first wanted to say NO WAY this is corporate policy. I can see certain depts. instituting this (you did mention you were sleepy), and maybe in extreme examples certain stores, but there is just no way that BB can nor needs to mark everything 50% off. And I certainly don't remember this policy in the past. Plus, I have seen too many dolts scoop up a banged-up unit with no remote for 15-20% off. Unless......

When would fiscal '02 end for BB from an inventory standpoint? Other BB employees have mentioned in the past that for inventory purposes the fourth Sat. of the month is considered the end of the month, and that every third fourth Sat. is the end of the quarter. I just assumed that yesterday was the end of the quarter. Can anyone clarify this?????

EDIT: After thinking about it, there was a time late in the year (I wanna say most of Dec.) about 4-5 years ago when most BBs were clearing out all O/B DVD players. I recall posts from all over the country reporting huge discounts, so I guess some sort of corporate clearance is not out of the question.....

Some of you BB employees may want to verify this but as I understand it BB stores have an "at risk" list. These are closeouts, returns, open boxes etc. I've had good luck with these,ie, Sony 36" HDTV for $750(it was a display model). I'm sure each store varies but before I buy anything I ask if it is on the at risk list.

Also, I think dep't managers have the authority to mark anything that is open box and < $100 to 50% off. Again, YMMV depending on the store and its management.

Regardless, even if you think BB sucks, I've always been able to get good deals at this time of year.

That's epic.

BTW, I saw a ReplayTV 5000 this morning at BB marked at $150. It had everything except the box. Original price was $199 after $100 rebate. I don't watch enough TV to warrant using it, though.

I thought I'd pop into my local Best Buy today. I couldn't find any "open box" items to speak of.

I guess, either:
1) The "big" sale was a few days ago and I missed it.
2) The employees purchased all of the "open box" items up.
3) They stock-piled the "open box items in the back room for a big clearance sale.

Option #3 seems kind of unlikely because why put the items away when you have a chance to sell them off at any given moment when the store is open.

However, I did hop over to Circuit City. They had several folding tables near the front of the store with "open box" merchandise. Most of the items were marked at only about 10% off. However, I did see a Pioneer '711' receiver for $169.99 - which seems like an "OK" deal to me. I then made my rounds over to the DVD player area. They had 2 Panasonic DVD-RV32K DVD players. These normally sell for $119.99 - $20.00 (mail-in rebate.) They were marked at $89.99. I picked on up a month ago for $69.99 after haggling with the salesperson so he would come down another $20.00 since the box was missing and I wouldn't have the capability to submit the $20.00 rebate. My mother-in-law wants a DVD player, so I located the same salesperson and asked about the price. He pulled up my transaction from nearly a month back and let me have a 2nd player at $69.99. This one for my mother-in-law appears as if it was just pulled out of the box and sold as an "open box" item. The remote, cables, batteries, etc. - were still sealed in the accessories box and the casing of the DVD player was pristine - just like the one I picked up for myself. At $69.99, this is a steal of a deal.

If you're not happy with the "open box" price, ask for them to go lower. In most cases, I've been very successful at getting Circuit City to come down on their prices for their "open box" items. I've never tried to get Best Buy to come down in their open box price. However, I did try to get them to price match one of my "open box" DVD players from Circuit City where it was clearly marked on the receipt. Best Buy would not do the price match for me - so their Panasonic "32" open box player sat on the shelf marked down only $10.00 off the original price - and it was missing the power cable.

Went again today. Nothing worth the trip at the one on Katy Freeway (Houston). Anyone know when this elusive "get rid of everything" week starts?

Hans,

Try the newer store in Westwood also. I find it to have better Clearance and Open Box deals than the one in West LA.

Except DirecTV open box buys. Almost pooped myself when I saw a stack of boxes containing 2 receivers and a dish for $19!

Problem is they won't sell them without a contract

Hmmm...anyone know about those contracts? do they require a CC... or any ID at all? "123 main street, yeah thats it"

123 Main st don't work anymore, since contracts require ID + Credit card or SS# if you don't have a CC.

But it seems you can buy them if you are an existing customer.

I said it before and I'll say it again and again and again..... this B&M your YMMV is just a bunch of thread crap. It shouldnt even be in these forums because for the *VAST* majority of posters they simply dont exist. Its not a hot deal if 99.99% of readers cant use it.

BBs in my area advertised 10% off all open box stuff in their Sunday ad...

Just purchased an open box external CDRW this morning and they honored the 10% off...

Went by the BB in Beaverton, OR yesterday.
There wasn't a whole lot to speak of. I'm looking for a receiver and they didn't have much open box stuff, except for Sonys. For instance, there was an open-box STR-DE885 for $265, so less than $240 after the 10% discount, and it's $320 new. Warm, but non-ES Sony receivers have a poor reputation.
If they would have had an open-box Pioneer VSX-D811S, I would have been all over it.

I did see a few other random open-box items, e.g. some DVD players, a ReplayTV, some speakers, etc. Nothing caught my eye as a flaming hot deal.

Guess I'll check out some other stores to see if they have open-box stuff.

Don't know about corporate policy, but at the BB where my friend works, employees are not allowed to purchase open box items. Supposed to eliminate the temptation to cheat, I guess.

My local Best Buy had a Canon S230 in the open box case and had everything in the box.
I was surprised to find that they actually had one, these are hard to find in stores and on the internet.
The $359 price was less than most internet retailers and then I received the additional 10% discount for Open Box items.
I am very happy at this moment.

Best buy near me had the Kenwood VR605 receiver open box (3 of em actually) for 125... can prob talk em down .. it's 150 normally for a pretty feature packed receiver. Only drawback was the cheap speaker connections on back.

Also has Panasonic SX12 open box with cracked case (on corner, doesn't affect performance at all) and no remote for 299. (I have an idea on that one I'm posting in other thread)

Panasonic CV52 (? , 5 disc DVD player) open box for 130-140, regularly 180 and on sale for 168 (I think (they had 3 of them) and it has a $30 mail in rebate. Great deal if you can find it.

EDIT/UPDATE: The CV52 actually has TWO $30 mail in rebates on it. One for bestbuy and one for panasonic. Both seem to require original upc ? ANyone have experience with this with bestbuy? I know staples takes copies of upcs fortheirs but what does bestbuy do when both they and mfr have rebates ? If you can get both, that makes the deal 108 after rebates new and probably 70-80 if you can find it open box. That's pretty hot.

My Atlanta area Best Buy had an open box Microsoft Bluetooth Intellimouse Explorer Mouse for $71.99 which is 15% off the $84.99 price. They applied the advertised 10% off all open box stuff in their Sunday ad plus I had the 10% off coupon from the December PC World. I was out the door $58.31 + tax for a Bluetooth mouse. (Used it for over 2 hrs now, quite happy.)

The second weekend after Thanksgiving, I was the Best Buy in Sugar Land, TX and one of the sales reps asked if I needed any help. She mentioned to me that all the open box items were discounted more that the marked price and to just ask for a lower price.

I saw an open box (very good condition, no box, but with manual, remote, and warranty card in a separate bag) JVC 27 inch TV marked down from $270 to $179. When I inquired about a lower price, I was told I could have it for $129. Sold!

Definitely varies from store to store and even at different time periods, YMMV, it helps to be courteous.

That, and when you talk about this deal, the word "DUH" comes to mind. Unless you don't leave your house until 4 months after Christmas, you'll notice this at some early point in your life.

WHOO WHOO! All aboard the clue train!

I guess you could consider it a hot deal to ask people to buy the floor model of an item for a greatly reduced price. Or if someone offers free installation, you can ask if they can cut out the installation price, because some stores used to add a few bucks on to cover that cost. (Now they don't add on, and do it just steal business from other places.)

I went to a BB nearby and found a open box DVD player and I grab it and wait in checkout line for 1/2 hr. Finally I was standing in front of the cashier and she told me the open box price is already included the instant rebate, after all, it is only $10 cheaper then I said forget it. Does it happen to anyone here, is the open box price already include the instand rebate?
