Please do yourself a favor and install this web filter: The Proxomitron

I found it poking around google groups after being inundated with those stupid 'AT&T Wireless' popups recently. I was not expecting much as I've tried all the other ad-killer programs out there. I downloaded this and was very surprised how well thought out it was and most importantly how well it works.

It runs as an HTML proxy that not only filters and replaces evil, nosy HTML, javascript and whatnot.

Just take a look at what it can do:

http://www.flaaten.dk/prox/features.html

All rules are soft coded and configurable. This proggy just rocks!

It is "Shonenware" which means if you wish to keep using the program, the author requires you to go out and buy a 'Shonen Knife' (seach cdnow.com if you don't know who they are) CD and write him back! Heh, you may be about to find them in the bargain bin any any decent used CD shop.

I installed Proxomitron about 6 weeks ago and think it's a GREAT program. I am guessing that it has killed about 95% (or more) of the popup ads that I used to see. The program is somewhat customizable, takes up little space and is free. Once downloaded, I just added it to my startup folder so that it automatically loads with Windows....and you can easily bypass it should you want to view some of those annoying popup ads. I highly recommend this as a download.

You can just add those popup sites to the restricted sites lists. And you can disable active scripting, that takes care of my pop ups, without installing programs which take system resources.

Thanks kesod for letting us know you have tried this program and it works. Which operating system are you currently using? Hope it works in my system I have xp running on my pc and 2000 on my lap top. I am always afraid to try anything on xp as it is sensitive to some program changes. Good find souja. Free is Hot so sounds good to me.

Cool, just installed on xp went ahead and took the chance. Programs looks simple and easy to operate and allows me to open extra windows when I choose. I tried another popup killer about 2 weeks ago and it was so good it stopped me from opening new windows and took a lot of fiddle work to get it even close to what I want. The popups have been driving me crazy lately.

although this thread is in the *** "hot deals" forum i have a quick question somewhat similar to this subject. who has got the fix for blocking unwanted emails? - i must get 20 a day that are spam..especially after looking up houses online!!!

***we are a community here and i don't mind an informational thread every once in a while to mix things up- kinda like jokersmoker's posts (jokersmoker i bought those bath rugs for 3.95 from kohls) - i must read this forum twenty times every day - looking at the same old threads.... don't get me wrong i enjoy the seperation of forums, and the moderators attention to detail in enforcing this. however, when it is all said and done we are all after information. so seize the day yall. lets continue take advantage of our collective knowledge even though it may be off topic sometimes.

I gave this program a try about a month ago, the thing I didn't like about it, and infact I stopped using it because of it, was that it blocked all the images in the emails in Outlook XP. You know all the pictures for the vendor mails of items on special, I even tried to configure Proxomitron to not block anything on web pages and it still was blocking the images in Outlook, and viewing mail not in HTML is not an option, I was wondering if anyone ekse was having this problem, and if there is a way to stop this because I do like the program.

Forgive my ignorance of computer software, but I just installed this program and like it.

My main reason for installing it is to reduce the annoying popup adds.

However, I just went to a frequently used website and it didn't remember me as
it said that my "cookies" were disabled.

Is there anyway to use this program while keeping cookies?

Thanks

Anthony

I would recommend to use Mozilla as browser. It gives you control over popup. The key feature here is it can disable JavaScript open window function on page load. This means no popup will ever show up when you visit the page. It also allows you to get rid of so-called "pop-under". Since I started to use it, I have never bothered with any popup killer program.

Bedscrew:

I have found the 100% solution to eliminating spam. I have used this solution for about a year now and I haven't gotten a single piece of spam. This is particularly spiffy since I post my email address all over the place (domain name registrations, forums, shady-looking vendors, etc).

Sign up for a free email account with Despammed.com. Despammed is a web-based free email account with the most amazing spam filters ever. You can check your mail online using their web interface, or you can just have all your email forwarded to another email address.

If you have another email account that is NOT currently getting spam, you'd probably want all of your despammed.com mail forwarded to it so you don't have to log in to their page to check your mail. If you don't have a "clean" (spam-free) email address now, sign up for one somewhere else (perhaps your ISP can provide you a new one) and have your despammed mail forwarded there. Then you can give out your despammed email address as much as you want, and somehow they automagically remove all the spam.

As always, YMMV.

Jackman, the really nice thing about Proxo is that it makes no entries to the registry or startup. So you can put the Proxo icon on your desk top and turn it on whenever you go surfing. Likewise, you can turn it off just as quickly with the task bar icon.

So turn it off just before you go to the site with the password popup menu.

Edit: Oooopps, not so easy to turn off. You also have to shut down localhost/port8080.

If you use the free limited version of AdSubtract, watch out for the "free" one month trial of the Pro version. I ignored the first offer of this from them but I was so special I got a second offer immediately. So I thought I had nothing to loose and accepted the offer. When I didn't think that it was really worth the extra features and let the trial run out it gave me two options, uninstall or buy the pro version. This means that the free limited version I had is now gone. And if I go get a new free version, it has a new feature at no extra cost, it now expires in six months. It looks like what they are doing is killing off all the unlimited time free versions that people have.

I'm wondering if opening up the proxy server localhost / port 8080 is opening up the pc to hackers.

As for ad filters, I use http://www.webwasher.com and have been very happy with it. It's free for non-commercial use and is extremely easy to set up. They say that the latest beta version does NOT work with Windows XP but I got it working with a little tinkering (PM me for instructions).

And no discussion of ad filters would be complete without www.junkbuster.com (GPL'd free ad filter) and www.guidescope.com. Because junkbuster is open source/GPL it's much-favored by the slashdot crowd.

I disagree with whoever said these weren't "hot deals" on the grounds that they are free. Just because you don't have to do rebates, price matching and send MIRs doesn't mean they aren't a great deal. Online advertisers these days are getting so agressive with ads (pop-ups, pop-unders, intersticials, etc) that filtering is almost a necessity for sane surfing. I'm sure glad there are a few of these programs available for free or cheap.

Just my $0.02.

RE: port 8080, it shoulnd't be anymore of a problem than any other open port. Run a good firewall and you'll be just fine.
