I have been using proxomitron for awhile. I like it a lot. You can easily bypass it when you have to. I noticed it will block a lot of the pictures on Amazon, so I bypass it for that sometimes. The pop-ups and crap had gotten out of control since the Dot-Com massacre. I couldn't take it anymore. The Proxomitron is super customizable if you are very familiar with HTML which I am not. I messed around with some of their prebuilt filters, but I don't know a lot of the HTML lingo. I have been happy with most of the default settings. The web is unusable for me with out a filter.

I don't like this one - too many config files and too much thinking to do while setting it up.

Try Popup Stopper here - it's a no hassle option.

Proxomitron has been around forever. I use it myself. It's very customizable -- there are text files that you can add to -- to tell it what sites to bypass, what sites to bypass cookies, what sites never to connect to, etc. etc. I find most the people on privacy sites/boards (like news.grc.com privacy board) use this product as well. It's free, and non-intrusive to your system.

Hmm, a proxy ad stopper is probably what I need. I'm running Noads right now, but it's an "ad suppressor". When ads pop out, they actually do pop out first before Noads closes the window. This is a problem when I'm playing an online game or using another application while I have a http window running in the background.

I'm assuming proxy stopper will stop it before it actually gets to be a window on my desktop.

I'll check it out.. thanks for the heads up.

You can do two things:

1. Right-click on the proxo icon in the tray and check "bypass" and then reload the page. Then when youare done, deselect "bypass" to get it working again.

2. Or a more elegant solution would be to add sites to an exclusion list just for cookies. On the Proxo main panel click on 'Config' then select the 'Blockfile' tab. Then highlight 'CookieList' and click edit. This will bring up a textfile in notepad with instructions. After the pound signs (#), just add the name of sites you want excluded. You can use any wildcards as well... Save and voila!

For example:

--

#
# EXAMPLE ENTRIES:
#
# [a-z]+.microsoft.com/
# (www.|)slashdot.org/
# *.myhost.com/mypage.html
#
#

*.espn.go.com*
*amazon*

<< I have Popup Ad Filter, but looks like it works with MS IE only. :| Maybe, I'm wrong but is there anything for Netscape or Opera ? >>

Just use Mozilla, it has popup blocking features built in. It can block windows that open on page load or exit. This blocks 99% of the annoying ad banners - including X10, orbitz, etc.

Just go into Edit-> Preferences -> Advanced -> Scripts & Windows

and de-select "Open unrequested Windows"

If all you want is popup killer, get Pop-Up Stopper from panicware.com. This one prevents all popups but have an easy way to allow them thru. It's much better than a proxy if all you need is to kill popups.

sonar:

My HTML emails in Outlook Express (running in WinXP Pro) are working fine. Maybe you should try the latest version - it looks like there have been some pretty hefty improvements in his auto scripts...

more info:

HTML is mostly just text. All this program does is intercepts the text before it get passed through to your browser. If it notices for example there is a link to a picture from an adserver, it can replace that link with a (much smaller and faster to download) text link instead of the picture. A few bytes for text compared to a few thousand for pictures. Right now the bottom of my AT Hot Deals page just shows: [Ad] . When I mouseover it, it still have the link to the advertiser (in this case it was realmedia).

Another example, right now as it is, if someone requests your IP address, what browser you use, or the last few sites you recently visited, most browsers will just 'respond' with the answers right back to anyone who requested it. You should be able to say no.

Here is a copy from the Proxo log with I visit our 'red-headed' step-child site. You will notice as soon as you visit the site, @@@wallet uses GET to tell your browser to display a couple ads of different sizes. Proxo notices this before it gets to your browser and RESPONDS by blocking the two ads and replacing them with text links before the information gets passed to your browser. Take a look:

Yes, browsers should include this kind of feature as you should be able to control what you are getting sent. As it is right now you browser is kinda serving up stuff like a fax machine - you are at the mercy of the sender if you visit their page. Better ones like Mozilla does allow you some control - programs like this just give you complete control... for us control freaks!

Yeah, yeah, I know... someone out there is screaming: T.M.I.!!! T.M.I.!!! (Too Much Information)

I second the recommendation for Mozilla. It blocks the most annoying popups (on load or exit) and still allows Javascript open window functionality for the links you click on youself.

Hey, noone has mentioned that Shonen Knife is a great band!

If you actually paid for the shareware by getting a CD like the author asked, you would be doing yourself a favor as well.

I've been using Proxomitron for a while now, I absolutely love it! Highly recommended, I couldn't live without it anymore. It's incredible that as soon as I turn it off, so many pop-ups come up, it's really nuts!

Proxomitron stopped working when I switched to a DSL provider that uses PPoE.

I suppose if you use a router to do the PPoE thing you'll have no problem, but all my PC's run XP and I can have multiple concurrent PPoE sessions, so no need here for a router which screws up filesharing apps.

It is a very feature rich program if you can use it.

I use Opera for a browser because I use a phone modem and it is the fastes browser, and you can disable pop ups or have them popup in the background. Which is good so you can read the good ones. I used POW with IE but it doesn't seem to work with Opera. If you haven't tried Opera check it out. You can use it with IE. I first got it to use as an alternative to surf with all cookies off. But as I got to know it better It has become my primary brouser. As the old commercial says "Try it you'll like it".
