Not that I know of - although a few of them have intelligent commercial skip.

Just to clarify, TiVo does NOTHING to omit commercials while recording. The best you can do with TiVo is to program the forward button to skip forward 30 seconds at a time, which simply makes skipping over commercials a little easier.

Older versions of ReplayTV (version 45XX and 50XX) used to have a feature called "Commercial Advance", which tried to detect commercials automatically and skip over them automatically. Due to legal problems, ReplayTV has removed this feature from the newer 55XX models. They have, however, implemented a new feature called Show|Nav. This analyzes the recording to figure out different "segments" of the show based on scene changes etc, and then allows you to jump over entire segments at a time. Since the entire commercial portion is kinda like a segment, you could, theoretically jump over the entire commercial segment as soon as it starts.

BeyondTV and MythTV both implement a strategy similar to this Show|Nav, which, I think, they call SmartSkip or something like that. Unfortunately I didn't get to try this out since it was not available in the version I tried, so I am not sure how well this works.

SageTV allows you to program two different types of forward/reverse actions and you can program the amount of time each press of the button jumps at a time. Using this, it usually takes only one press of a "long" forward jump to skip over commercial segments. It is very easy to use.

psxjunky is right on.

BeyondTV has Smartskip which will scan your recorded shows for commercials and make an xml file with the commercials marked. You can set it to create the chapters immediately after the recording is done or during your set off peak times. All I have to do is hit the 'up' key on my Hauppauge remote and it jumps to the beginning and ends of the commercials. Gotta love watching 30 min shows in 22 mins.

It works decent enough. Misses a few commercials here and there if a station doesn't give enough fade to black time between commercials.

Thanks that was just the information I needed. I think I will get that card to replace my leadtek. What about the audio, the Leadtek kind of reminds me of a 96kb mp3 when I listen to the sound. Is the ATI any better in that regard. What about software?

Well, as far as I remember, there wasn't that much difference in audio quality ... but I am not a audiophile by any means. So take my opinion for what its worth

Anyway, I will repeat what I said before -- if you are planning to get a new card solely for the purpose of recording TV, get a card that does hardware encoding. You will be much happier.

YEP. IT uses linux.

What in the world are you talking about? Did you read that question right?

Damn, you gave me a cardial infarction for one moment, until I realized it's linux-only.

Damn, that'd be sweet. Free *nice* PVR software for the PC.

So, guys, which one of these programs will allow me to do this:

Setup my home computer (2.54 P4 on a FAT pipe) to stream recorded shows to my laptop at another location?

Yep, that's what he meant ... MythTV works only on Linux. Last I checked there wasn't any plans to port it on Windows and even heard a couple comments that it will be pretty difficult to port even if someone wanted to.

It sure will be ! In the mean time check out GB-PVR and MyHTPC for two free solutions at the monent ...

Both SageTV and BeyondTV will, and I am pretty sure MythTV will too !

Are any of the free PC alternatives any good?

I can't install them right now.

Sorry I can't answer this since I haven't personally tried either one; but I am sure some other folks here can shed some light about these.

GB-PVR is fairly new, so I don't expect too many comments about it; but myHTPC seems to be very popular among many people ... so I expect there will be some feedback about this.

myHTPC does many things ... only one of which is TV recording. Unfortunately, the TV plugin module of myHTPC is rumored to be the weakest one.

If you want a robust solution that you can count on (read: don't want to get your wife/gf mad by missed shows ) then I think you pretty much have to go with a commercial solution. SageTV has not missed a single show for me since I installed it

So which one is best? LOL

What's the slowest CPU needed to not compromise video quality at all? Would an XP 1600+ do?

I hear people mention Virtual VCR. What is it?

I'm running BTV perfectly on a p3 800 with PVR250 encoder card. Some folks have used even slower machines!
I never drop frames like I did with the AIW7500, ocasionally playback will freeze momentarily if some app gets greedy for cpu. Wouldn't happen if this was a dedicated HTPC.

This software is completely addictive. You will never sit through commercials again, or watch something just because it was the only thing on at the time. It's simple to record only "new" episodes and not repeats or pre-emptions, so a show with a wacky schedule like Alias is no problem.

I have a 25 ft s-video cable running from my pc in the basement to the TV in the living room, and a Remote Wonder rf control that works perfectly. HTPC bliss is completed by Sennheiser cordless headphones.

That is my opinion too, but I would encourage you to try out both and then make a decision. The only thing to keep in mind is that do not be put off by the SageTV v1.4 interface. Version 2.0 is almost ready for release (public beta is going on right now) and it has a vastly superior, almost TiVo like interface. SageTV v2.0 interface

They got to work 5 boards at once at CES.

And I am using 4 tuners in my SageTV machine right now without a single hiccup. Works absolutely flawlessly

So what is the most popular encoder (tuner?) card?

If you wanna burn the shows to DVD, do most people do it on their HTPC or transfer it to their main PC somehow?

Undoubtedly the most popular tuner card is the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250.

When I burn shows onto DVD, I cut the commercials on the SageTV machine and prepare the DVD image from the MPEG2 in the same machine, but then for burning I actually move the image to a different machine. You could theoretically burn the DVD on the same machine too, but I just don't want to end up with a coaster just because the machine started recording 4 shows at a time in the middle of burning the DVD
