One thing to be careful of, is that NOT ALL HAUPPAUGE TV CARDS USE ON-BOARD HARDWARE ENCODERS. In fact most of them do NOT. It is only the WinTV PVR 250/350/250MCE and WinTV PVR USB2 series of devices that have on board hardware encoders.

Check out this list to check if your card has an onboard hardware encoder.

In general, you can look at the chipset on your card and figure this out too. If it is a Connexant BT868/BT869/BT878/CX25870/CX25871/CX25875 based card then is does not have hardware encoder; however if you see a Connexant CX23415 or CX23416 then you got a hardware encoder.

I have used this also for the last 3-4 months. You also need a TV tuner card in your PC. Your cable goes to the PC tuner card, and then to your TV. In my case I use a Hauppage 250 tuner card.

You control everything from your easy chair and your TV and not your computer, althoug you can do it from your computer too.

Works just like TIVO and is free.

A very nice thing is that you can tell it to record things when you are away from your home computer. For example, when I am at work, I can log onto snapstream.net and see my TV guide. I can then click on things I want to record and they will be recorded on my computer at home.

You can control the quality of the recording to save hard drive space.

I have a digital TV and the quality is excellent.

The program also is doing live TV recording so that if you want to replay something on TV, you just hit the rewind button.

I recorded the Superbowl but was away when the Janet Jackson thing happened. The next day I could replay that part frame by frame. I still don't know why everyone got so upset. You really needed to be looking for something to have really caught what happened.

Anyway, I highly recommend this software. It will truly change the way you watch TV.

The files are saved as mpeg2's on your computer. I can then play them on any computer on my network, or burn them to CD or DVD and watch them on a plane while travelling.

And best of all, no monthly fees.

Likely not, as long as you get the hardware encoding TV tuner, like the WinFast PVR.

It's been summed up well, but I'm incredibly impressed with this software. If you need to run a Windows box, this is the way to go.

I also use the PVR-250, and notice no slowing except for the obvious necessity of constant disk activity. I would definitely make sure you use a hardware mpeg encoder, no matter how high end your PC.

Just to clarify, it is the WinFast PVR2000 that Diabolus is talking about here ... NOT the WinFast TV2000 XP Deluxe (~$45 @ Newegg) which is very popular around here.

The PVR2000 does have onboard hardware encoder, whereas the TV2000 does not.

"Cheap" and "Small Form Factor" usually don't go well together in the same sentence What you get in an SFF PC is basically the case, power supply and a well integrated motherboard. You pay anywhere between $150 to $350 for a SFF PC. If you buy the cheapest case, mobo and PSU separately, you can usually do much better.

That's what I was afraid of. I don't mind spending lots of money on my main PC, but not for this.
So then what case, mobo and PSU would you recommend? A flat PS2 style case I could put in my A/V rack would be nice, vs. the 'shoe box' (?) style.

For the money, I don't think you can beat one of the Dell deals. Get the cheapest sever you can find, right now less than $300 AR includes memory, HD, and CD.

Oh yes ! I totally agree !

How could I forget good ol' Dell

You may not get a nice little case, but like he said, you simply can't beat their price ...

Could someone help me. My question is this, say I want to buy a laptop with AMD XP-M 2500+ processor with 256MB of DDR SDRAM and a 40 GB hard drive, 1) what would I need to make Sage TV work on this laptop (or simply, what would I need to make this laptop a portable Tivo machine)?

Say I bought a new HP zv5000z series notebook with a AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3200+ 2.00 GHz, 256MB DDR SDRAM, 40 GB 4200 RPM HD, and a 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go Graphics Card. 2) What would I need to complete my "moble TiVo" then?

Basically, I want to replace my outdated desktop with a laptop and have the features of a PVR. What kind of set up would I need for a laptop to do this? FYI I don't want to have to buy a new computer for at least 4 years.

Sorry I'm new to this technology. I've read Sage TV's website and know very little about PVR's. Thanks in advance for any info.
