Just wondering what software is everyone using to test the stability of their o/ced chips?

For me I'm using Prime95 Torture Test. What's something that will test your system memory? I'm sorta overclocking my PC-100 stick to PC-133 (Micron 8E).

Wow! Listen to this. I installed windows without a problem. I raised the speed of the duron to 700, 800, then 850 without a voltage increase. Things sound good right. Then it happened. At 900mhz the computer would not fire up. No problem I tell myself. Hit the insert button. Well guess what? My registry went bonkers and I had to reinstall windows. This time I put the voltage up to 1.75 and i am running 8.5x x 105. I am at 900mhz but it is more stable. I installed windows at this speed and so far so good. I guess the limit of most of the chips is around 900-950mhz. Some people get lucky and get a little more but not many.

ouch... Just chipped a corner on one of my Duron 600 chips... thank GOD it still works. Heard so many horror stories about people chipping their chips even when using approved AMD HSFs

Tip of the Day:

Always plug in the heatsink fan when you are working with a AMD Duron/Tbird. Of course that's common sense but I sorta didn't second check

Mine reached a freaky 106C with the fan off. Not a pretty sight. I just cooked my finger on the heatsink.

Check out the front page of www.overclockers.com hopefully amd won't go too far w/ trying to stop us! 9/11/00 - AMD CPU Missing Pin Update: Apparently, the picture of the Pin-Is-Gone at Insane Hardware was a doctored picture which was a practical joke. I think all of you have wrongly put trust in somebody, but if you didn't trust anybody anytime, you'd have a miserable life.

quoting starts here
Nonetheless, we still have a report from someone at Soltek saying that pins were missing, and that hasn't been dismissed as a fraud. I've seen at least one website say they've been in contact with AMD on this and even defended their decision, and I hope they're not that hard-up for a story.

One item that does trouble me and leaves a little room for doubt is that the AMD responses I've seen don't indicate that any further actions were taken.

I know I'm going to keep an eye out for Pin-Is-Gones, but do you know what? I hope this is all nonsense. If it is, might make me look a little silly, but better to be vigilant and have a false alarm here and there than just to stay silent. If other people and places know otherwise, I would hope they should have said something by now, don't you think? Ed

OK, I gather 'most' everyone seems to suggest the Abit motherboard for this. What would make this deal really sweeeeeeet is hot buy on a motherboard as well.

Will this one from Buy.Com work as well with it?
SlotA Motherboard from Buy.Com w/ not a lot of description

If so, looks like the two would add up nicely to over $150 together and well... you guys know the rest......

That buy.com board will work great, as long as you have a sledge hammer or a set of torches. That board is Slot A. Duron's and T-Bird's are Socket A.

Ok, I have my duron at week29 in my hand, and mechanical pencil on the desk within my reach. My Abit KT7 is scheduled to delievered today. And I need the ANSWERS of these question badly.
1. Would it be ok that I stick with the fan and heatsink comes with the Duron and overclock to 900? What decisive temperature will force me to go for global win?
2. Is it necessary to flash the bios on the kt7 chip, or what's new features of the new bios? What's the hazard of running the original bios coming with abit kt7 no raid?
3. Some of my components are pretty ancient, (video: trident 9865, sound: opti3931), does the video card affects the overclocking? my memories are 64+64+128 Kingston Value Rams PC100.
4. Someone mentioned that failed to boot while tweaking will need to reinstall windows. I'm having my 20gb harddrive installed with triple systems, win98/2k/linux. What would likely be my situation? I have to reinstall all three OS? I would rather kill~!@#

well...i go my processors yesterday, and stated right away. i plaqued one in my kt7 raid and booted just fine. no merit in that. then the real action started.

I penciled in the L1 bridges, which by the way has never failed me yet. I the upped the voltaged to 1.75v..and with unlocked processor started doing what we do best.

I started setting it a 750Mhz (101F)....800Mhz (105F)...900Mhz (106F)...950Mhz was reported as 900Mhz at POST, yet still clocked at 950Mhz (109F). And then it happend...100Mhz x 10.0, 1.70v: 1000Mhz (114F). It's running like a dream..infact because all of this happned last night at 3:00am, im still in dream!

I purchased a peltier for it, so the temp issue should resolve itself.

Was $130 worth for 1000Mhz x 2...oh yes.

Jebus,
Starting to wonder if perhaps *I* got the bad CSR. She was nice enough though :-( My account page still says "sent to warehouse", but CSR told me it takes a while sometimes to update. Gonna call back later in the day to see if it actually shipped, like they told me it did yesterday.

PW shows re-sellers selling them 600's for $54 and up. Are these locked? Any ideas?

FYI.....I ordered the duron saturday and their website just put up my tracking # today. So If you ordered yours around that time you should be getting your tracking number or your chip soon.

Jugernot, Jebus,
Don't lose hope. Just checked the site, and my order is complete, with tracking numbers. Good luck with yours.

Got my two durons the other day. Unlocked as expected. Will have to wait a week or two before I can pick up a mobo to play with but I'm looking forward to overclocking goodness. I thought about buying a conductive pen and "passing" it to everyone else on the forum, one by one. Heh. Then I woke up.

(June 14th, 2002: Posted by ForumReader Is the pen to -me- yet?!)

Anyways, I'll likely put some Artic Silver on 'em and run them with the stock HSF though I'm "tempted" to pick up a hedgehog and try that.

I ordered mine monday (9-11), and it showed that it checked out from FL on its way to Ohio today. I will let you guys know if it's locked. If it is, I will return it. To see if it's locked or now, do I need to break anything permanently?

I read all the posts in the thread that I have a few things I don't quite understand what you guys were talking about.

>AKBA0029XPAW
>92125161322

>This appears to be a week 29. Does anyone have results >of a similar code or any code? I will not be able to >assemble until this weekend!

From what I gathered, I would have better luck with week 29 than week 31. The number AKBA0029.. is the indicator of week 29. What does week really mean here? It's a time indicator that it was produced in 29th week when this chip was first produced?

Can any kind soul who has it done sucessfully posts a step-by-step for someone like me to follow? I will start by what I gathered from the thread:

Things you need:
1) AMD Duron 600mhz
2) ABIT KT7 Socket-A Athlon/Duron Motherboard
3) A 2B pencil, conductive pens, or defogger repair paint (any success report on option 3?)
4) globalwin fan or Alpha Pal6035 (if you want to go over 900mhz, second one is better??) Is there a link or review to these 2 devices?
5) boot disk with new flash file (KT7_ul.bin)

Steps
1) After receiving the CPU, check a. if it's week 29, b. if it's unlocked like the Image here. If this is no missing pins, then it's fine.

2) Unlock the multiplier from the front of the chip by following instructions at Unlocking1 or Unlocking2.

3) Flash BIOS of motherboard (direct copy from posts):
1. Make a bootable floopy (format a: /s in DOS).
2. Copy the the flash program to the disk (awdflash.exe).
3. Copy the flash file to the disk (KT7_ul.bin).
4. Boot to the floppy.
5. Type awdflash.exe.

Here is my question: do you do this before you install Windows? You need the CPU to do this, right? I will probably prepare the disk before swapping the motherboard with my current machine.

4) Assemble the components, adding all the cooling stuff (?)

5) Boot with DOS and use Softmenu and set the right setting. Mayb start with 600mhz
(Any special settings I should change besides the multiplier, FBS?? Can you post your setting?)

6) Install Windows

7) Reboot to try higher speed.

Do I miss any important steps or would do something wrong in certain steps????

Thanks,

CLiu

Alzebra. If it fails to boot and you're using the Abit board, you just hit the insert key when you turn the pc on.The hit delete key to go back to softmenu to make adjustments.Easy for me.

CLiu I have two week 29's and the one I tested runs fine at 901mhz (106 x 8.5) @ 1.75v now. It would not post at 950mhz at 1.75v. It ran at 850mhz @1.65 when I tried to post at 900mhz at the same voltage it locked up the computer and messed up the registry. I had to reinstall windows me. I guess that is the limit for this one. I wonder how much of a difference 950 and 1000 would be over 900? opinions? The other chip I have is the same week and the one made right after this one.
