Are you using thermal compound or just the thermal pad? I was having the same problem with the pad until I saw that I didn't take all of the plastic wrapper off of the pad. The plastic wrapper is blue while the pad is kind of a tan-orange color. Before I was getting temps around 56 C and after I was getting temps around 28 C.

I received mine yesterday. It looks like fine. All pins are there. Duron 600 back I am amazed on how small the L1 area is. It's 2mm most. Without enlargement with my digital camera, I cannot really see it. Actually, I don't know if it's connected already or not. Please take a look. L1 mine has AKBA0029XPAW so I guess it's week 29 assembled in Malaysia. I have to wait for my MB.

Xmenxmen, can you post the link of comparison. THe one you provided just go to a tom's hardware guide logo.

seen it before, but ordered two - $15 each plus USPS - it has a
regular straight down locking clamp rather than twist - figure I
can make it fit my KT7 with a little trimming, if necessary.

Your L1 bridges are disconnected. On my chip, there are some dark smudge areas around the bridges that have been cut. I believe your picture shows that, but i'm not sure

I have a quick question regarding memory overclocking...

How overclockable is PC100 memory? I saw an earlier post where someone suggested overclocking it +33mhz to see if the memory can handle it. How successful is this usually? Also, what is the best way to test whether or not the memory "can handle" the boost?

Thanks for any information! I have 2 sticks of PC100 (only plan on using 1 with this Duron).. hopefully one of them can be cranked up a little.

For anyone using a KT7 board with your Duron, I would highly suggest checking out:

I followed their suggestions for the fastest settings and it made a BIG difference. In particular, look at the RAM settings; I ended up with a huge increase over what ABITs defaults gave(not counting the HCLK + PCI setting for 133 MHz -- I did that first thing upon installing the mobo.)

FYI: I am running stable at a little over 900 MHz (106 MHz * 8.5) @ 1.7 Volts. Max temp hits about 42 C while playing UT. I'm using the PAL6035 fan. New case with (hopefully) better airflow will arrive tonight.

One other thing: there are a couple NOTABLE errors in the ABIT KT7 manual (mem speed isn't limited to 133MHz, and you can't adjust the FSB without affecting the PCI/AGP buses) -- the faq above points these out.

Hope this isn't considered off-topic since it's basically about the KT7 board, but I thought this might help some people.

Here's an alternative to coughing up the geld to buy two of these CPUs from Buy.com: Axiontech claims to have a limited number of boxed retail Duron 600s which they are hawking for $70 plus about $8 ground S&H. That really isn't much different than [($82 x 2 x 1.0725 (tax, CA)) - $30 + ~$6] / 2 = $79. Does anyone know if Axiontech is particularly slimy or if these CPUs are not multiplier unlockable?

In any case, Buy.com's $30 off $150 promotion seems slated to end today (9/15), though they'll probably offer another one at some point.


Also, some folks have asked if there are any dual Duron mobos out there. Apparently not at the moment, but according to this article Via is slated to introduce a new Apollo Pro KX266 chipset in December that will have SMP & DDR support, as well as a 133 MHz bus and 6 USB ports.

Could someone help me, I got my setup, penciled in the l1 bridges, put the computer together (video ram processor) and it won't boot. It just gives a single beep, waits a bit, single beep, repeats this forever.
Any advice?
I am using the abit kt7 board, and I couldn't find what the beeps mean in the manual.

I've got a golden orb with my own tube of heatsink paste. I wiped off the original that was on there. There wasn't any plastic stuff at the bottom of it.

I'm just wondering if my chip's temp is being reported wrong? What chip settings in MBM do you guys have it on?

One Long beep is RAM. Pull your DIMMS and reseat them one at a time.
