Got my Duron today. Those idiots at Buy.com shipping in Fullerton, CA obviously don't know how to pack items as my duron was packed with the retail box touching the bottom of the box and two layers of butcher paper on top. Needless to say, the Duron retail box was thrashed. Anyhow, I think this works to my advantage as AMD packages the CPU pretty well regardless of the outside. I called Buy.com and told them what a losey job the packaging was and they told me if the CPU doesn't work, I could return it to them for a brand new one. The L1 pins are cut but the bottom pins seems intact. If I can't clock this baby to 900, I'll return it and get a new one...hehe. I listed the code below:

mondo problem guys...
so i got my cpu and i used pencil to connect the dots. i put all the things in my comp:
kt7-raid
duron600
(2) 128 meg sticks ram (1 is pc133 value ram from mushkin, the other is pc100 from pny)
leadtek geforce 2mx
linksys lne100tx
sound blaster 512 pci

i put the thing together and boot her up. up she boots, everything seems cool. i restart and go into the bios...i change the multiplier and fsb speeds and then go down to another option and it seemed like the computer froze (i had not accepted settings yet), my keyboard had turned off (num lock was off and kb stopped responding), then after about 30 seconds or so the screen turns off and the hd seems to be being accessed and my cdrom light flashes.
any ideas what's wrong?
i thought it might be that i don't have an amd approved ps but i checked the rating of the ps and it's the same as the amd approved ps so i don't think it should be a problem.
please help, thx

btw, i haven't put any form of cooling on it yet because i wanted to make sure that the "unlocking" worked.

no heh...i just wanted to make sure the pencil trick worked
well i popped in my other processor (that hasn't been touched) and the same thing happened so i guess it's probably either not the cpu or that i need to put the thermal compound and hsf on.
gonna go do that...will report back asap!

Abra ... those things get VERY hot VERY fast ... if you put them BOTH in at the overclocked speeds (or even regular speeds) without the heatsink and fan, you may have just fried BOTH your procs. Good luck to you ...

sigh...just didn't want to go through the hassle of having to take the fan off and do the penciling over again. both processors are fine...thank god.

Anyone know of any way to tell if the processor is unlockable by the UPC on the box or anything? I have 30143-37600 I guess I'll open it up and post the results. If you guys have anything similar, post it so that the numbers can be compared

is that a sign of a fried processor??
please tell me that it'll work...oh please!

What's Artic Silver? Is it thermal grease or is it conductive? Could you have possibly shorted the L1 bridges together somewhere? I will say this, if the PC comes on, the fan spins, but you never get so much as a beep out of the case speaker, it is probably dead (unless you don't have the speaker plugged in).

There is a very good chance that it's fried!
Maybe you can get away with returning to buy.com for exchange.

I see what you were trying to do, but . . . never startup a computer without having a cooling device on the cpu. I had an older AMD K6-233 that was hanging up on me and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the problem was until I had my fingers probing around for loose connections and just about burn the fingerprint off of my fingers!! I touched the edge of the CPU and it was freakin hot!! It had the heatsink on it, but the fan had become disconnected, so the CPU was overheating.

Always use a cooling device, they heat up quickly!!

Good Luck!

abracadabra1, sorry to say that too, but you had probably fried the CPUs. As everyone had said, without the HSF, it heats up very very quickly. Besides, when you put a PC100 RAM in with the 133, you are wasting the 133.

OH...[bad words]!
i didn't have the comp on for more than a couple of seconds...can a cpu really get fried so quickly??
this is just terrible damnit, terrible!
well i'm going to disconnect the power cable from the comp and hit the sack...haven't gotten more than 20 hours of sleep in the past week...i guess why i'm not really that angry...can't afford to, right now.
g'nite folks...i'll post more tomorrow (hopefully good news!)

For those that have Abit KT7/KT7-RAID boards, Abit has a new BIOS available. The 1.85v support should help some people to get that next speed mark.

1. Supports core voltage to 1.85v.
2. Adds 3 options in BIOS " Enhance Chip Performance","Force4-way Interleave","Enable Dram 4K-Page Mode".
3. Fixes Duron CPU(1.6v) issue

Abbra:
Check to make sure that you are not shorting your Mobo. Unless you shorted your CPU, I don't think the heat alone (for a few sec) will kill the processor. Good luck.

PS. Man I would love to get on this deal, but the SO is on my case! She can't figure why I need another PC to add to the 3 already in the house! =(

Tedtalker1: I have an ASUS A7V and just got the Abit KT7-RAID. Have yet to touch it yet. That BIOS revision should improve memory performance however.
