No offense, but if you can't figure it out from somewhere within the first 300 posts above, then you never will!

VH200,

You misunderstood my question. I just received the 600Mhz duron today from buy.com. What i want to know is how i can tell that the cpu i got is locked or unlocked by looking at the cpu pins ? Thanks!

Jebus,
I just recieved my shipment. It shipped from Anaheim. It is a week 29, with the L1 strips not connected. (so it is locked). Easily fixed with the pencil trick....not too hard to do with a mechanical pencil. Can't test it for sure, b/c my motherboard from MicroBarn is not coming till Tuesday....but my fingers are crossed.

Hope you get yours soon.

I ordered over the weekend, and they got to my door Monday.

I got a Duron 650, week 22. From what it looks like, the L1 bridges are still connected, so I skip the pencil-in step right?

Hello, everyone,
I ordered one, but it might not be the best option for me. I talked to a friend of mine who has the same machine as mine (Celeron 300A on Abit BH6). He bought a Celeron 566mhz and overclock it to 850Mhz. He just need to buy the chip (around $80 to $90), an adaptor (slot 1 to Socket 370, $10 or so), and a fan. So the total cost to go from 450mhz (overclocked) to 850mhz is only a little over $110. If I go Duron way, I will have to spend $235($75 chip +$140 MB +$20 fan) or more. It makes less sense to me.

Tell me some good reasons that I should convert to AMD camp!! Do you know of any URL comparing the speed? Is Duron much better chip than Celeron?

Thanks for any pointers!!!

Cliu: The Duron has close to PIII performance at the same clock speed....much faster than a comparible celery.

For the newcomers to this thread: Most of the questions being asked have been asked and answered already. Just browse through the thread. There are benchmarks, pictures, instructions, and all kinda goodies.

For the new peeps to the thread or old, who asked about the week 31's and KT7 not booting...
"ripped from the thread"

Use an HB, B or 2B pencil to close the 4th L7 bridge on the top of the CPU. This sets the voltage manually at 1.625v and allows the machine to boot. You can then flash to the later BIOS. (The graphite in the pencil is sufficient to make an electrical connection across the bridge). See Overclocking the Duron/Thunderbird for a detailed description of how these L7 bridges work so that you know what you are doing! This may void your warranty (if anyone notices).

As far as price wise , i have a p3 933@1 g (wich im going to set back to 933) , running as a server with 312Mb's of PC-133 ram , would a duron 650@950 Make a good server if i kept it kool enough ?

And if not what about 2 Durons (not that it could be done (but if it could be)?)

so who wins ?

2 Durrons @ 950 on a dual board with smp.

or

A p3 933 Flip chip super cooled ?

First off the AMD Duron is a low end cpu (it may beat the crap out of Intels P3 at some speeds but that is not their intent). You would really need to compare the Athlon or T-bird to the P3 to be fair. The direct competitor for the Duron is the famous Celeron. I think we can all agree clock for clock the Duron smokes the Celeron. As for OC...Duron 600@900/950 makes the Celeron 566@900 look sick.

Edit:firingsquad has a great article that shows Duron 600 beating up Celeron 600 pretty good

Well it seems the CSR I talked to was clueless afterall because I just recieved my chip today (I ordered 2day air). My chip has:

D600AST18
AKBA 0029XPAW
92125161425

That means I got a week 29 chip, right?

btw: I took a pic of my cut L1 bridges that afaik are the closest pictures I've seen.

Cut bridges

Now I'm off to get a mobo.

this is a tough time for me...
decisions decisions decisions

i can get now:
duron (from buy) locked BUT o/c'able to obscene MHz
abit kt7-raid
2x pc133 128 sticks
and a gf2

or i can wait till xmas and maybe get my hands on a
duron maybe o/c'able (or even a tbird)
some DDR mobo
2x pc133 128 sticks
and a gf2...

I would have to get a new case too, in order to run either of these mofos (i only have a 235W ps)

what do you think? is it worth the wait?
or is it already too late to order a duron already?
right now i'm using a
p2 400
192 pc100
tnt
(i really hate waiting whole days to get stuff divx'ed )

A question: Has anyone had to remove the heatsink and re-apply the pencil? If so, how did reattaching the heat sink go?

Duron 600
Abit Kt7
Inwin full tower 300 watt ps
128 mb 133mhz Crucial Ram
Geforce 2
2x20 gig HDD, AtA 66/7200 rpm

Why are you guys still keep making silly comparision between the Duron 600 and the Celeron 600 since they are entirely different in a way. Duron runs at 100 x 6 which the Celeron run at only 66 x 9.

If you want to do real comparision or at least show the performance between one another, at least compare it with the same Bus speed, cause that's pretty much determine what's faster. Try a Celeron 850 (8.5 x 100) or something close and compare it with the same Duron.

Just to show some real number, here's a pic from Tom comparing all the cpu,
Tom's Quake III comparision
Office Application Performance

And for the guys that keep asking about upgrading from a BX celeron to a Duron, there is not much reason that you should not go and grab Celeron 566 and an adapter than try to a whole new setup going for the Duron. Who know, those guys might be rich or something.

Thanks RobTV, I changed my Duron 9 x 100 to 8 x 112 and it seem to run more stable as well at 1.8v.

What are the temps you guys are getting? I'm using MotherBoard Monitor to monitor my temps and my chip is pretty hot! I had the original heatsink on it to see how well it does, but it's not well suited for overclocking, even though it's a pretty good heatsink. Currently got an original Golden Orb on it.
