I have hated Buy.com since they did away with phone customer service. I will still order the occasional blazing hot deal from them, but I won't bother with them at any other time. If I can get the same thing for roughly the same price elsewhere, I will never deal with Buy.com.

Also, I will NEVER use anything other than a one-time-use credit card number with Buy.com (I use AmEx Private Payments). This is because I am ABSOLUTELY SURE that Buy.com had their credit card list compromised a while back and never acknowledged it. I know two people who only used their credit cards ONE TIME to buy something online, at Buy.com, and both wound up having to cancel their credit cards because mysterious charges started showing up from somewhere in Europe. I had the same thing happen, although I shopped at lots of places online (including Buy.com), so I can't be sure where they got my number.

It's generally good practice to use only one credit card with a small maximum credit limit (say $500~ $2000) for all your online purchases to minimize damage from potential fraud. Having one from a bank that offers online protection program is a plus. By law, I believe you are liable up to $50, even if it's not your fault.

Personally, I ordered a couple of items from buy.com. Luckily, everything went fine. Both shipped very fast, and I received the items that I orderd without any problems. I didn't have an occasion where I had to contact CSR, so I can't offer my experience in that regards.

For this deal, shipping was lightening fast. I selected budget shipping to get free shipping, and the package was delivered next day via FedEx ground. I don't think this is a general practice by buy.com, but nevertheless, I was very impressed with them.

This Yamaha system is very good. The sounds are clear and crisp while bass has enough "thump" to meet my daily needs. I mostly play mp3 and games with occasional DVD's, and most of the time, I only have to turn the master volume about a third of the way. I am replacing the Altec Lansing 2.1 ATP3 speakers that I currently have, and I strongly recommend this product.

Just wanted to give my initial impressions of it now that I have it hooked up. Sub is much larger than I expected - about 1' high, 1 1/2' wide, 1' deep, very heavy. The satellites measure 3.8" wide x 6.3" high x 6" deep. Satellite speakers come with *two* inputs so it's possible to hook up two computers to one set of speakers. Only one cable is provided though so you would have to get another one if you wanted to set them up this way. Comes with a headphone jack on the right satellite which is sometimes hard to find these days.

Hook up is easy, comes with the following cables:
1. 3.5mm stereo mini plug from right satellite to computer
2. 8 pin cable from right satellite to sub
3. RCA cable from left satellite to sub

Sub has power button on back, volume knob on front. Right satellite has volume knob and power button.

I'm currently running some Logitech z540s (4.1) at home and I can say these Yamahas definitely blow them away. Much more power and the sound is very crisp, bass is somewhat subdued but at perfect levels. When I say the bass sounds subdued - I mean it's not rattling and hurting my eardrums. It compliments the satellites very well.

On my Logitechs, I have to have my wave & master volume turned all the way up, and even then the volume level on the speaker is at least at 60% or more. With the Yamahas, I have my wave/master volume set at 20% and the volume on the speaker set at about 20% to produce fairly LOUD listening levels. I can't even imagine what turning them "up" would do.

So how does this 2.1 setup compare with my Logitech 4.1 setup? Or which one would be preferable? I would think the 4.1 would be more ideal if you watch a lot of movies and want the "surround" effect, but if you're using the speakers mainly for music & games, I'd go with the Yamahas in a heartbeat.

Do you know that buy.com charges money to talk to you about your existing orders
You should have read his post before talking to a CSR... Sucks, doesn't it?
I can't even imagine what turning them "up" would do.
You would first have to cover your ears so it doesn't blow out your eardrums, then you somehow notice soon enough that your neighbors are banging on your walls/door, and finally, you'll turn them down with a big grin on your face, thinking, "this rocks."

Rebate problems...

I just checked my rebate status at www.rebatestatus.com
and I get the following crap...
Status: We have received your submission. We were unable to process your submission for the reasons indicated below. The SKU number printed on the receipt does not match the SKU number printed on the delivery packing slip and/or the UPC number submitted does not match the UPC number printed on the delivery packing slip. You will receive a letter or postcard explaining this problem. The letter or postcard may have additional instructions on how to correct this problem.

I sent in the ONLY receipt that I was given from BUY.COM, the receipt which was in/on the box! I just double-checked a copy of my BUY.COM receipt, and it clearly has the correct UPC... 86792275659. I also sent in the original UPC cut from the box, which had this very same number on it. What gives?

Was the Yamaha rebate the $25 or $20? On the printable rebate, there are two YS50 speakers listed, one for $20 rebate, other for $25. I circled the $25 rebate, because I assumed this was for the black speakers.

My Buy.Com receipt clearly states it is a $25 rebate and I bought the black speakers as well. It is contained on the receipt in the form of a clickable link that directs you to the .pdf form.

Just received post card today saying same thing about UPC and/or SKU not agreeing!

I checked my copy of my submittal. Both the SKU's and the UPC agree except the packing list has an extra "0" in front of the UPC! If they are rejecting it for this, it is a real crock!

Sent a e-mail from rebatestatus web site asking them to check into it. There phone number appears to only have automatic response at night. May try again during day.

If they do not honor my submittal it maybe the last thing I buy from "buy.con"

Have you checked the status of your rebate online at rebatestatus.com? Mine was denied but then a second entry showed up online that is valid so it appears that they tried to fix the first invalid denial

If these speakers can keep 20+ drunk people shaking their rumps, they are more than adequate for your desktop. Get'em now!

Isn't clean, booming sound an oxymoron?

Anyhow, I can't believe they're still selling these. I bought one 3 years ago and it still works, I haven't felt any need to upgrade they still do the job. They can go pretty loud but they get boomy in the bass when played loud, but pretty much every pair of computer speakers have that problem. For the price they are a really good deal.

Too bad there's no more free shipping... it's currently ~$80 before rebate. I'm just now in the market for speakers.

A similar thing happened to me. They denied my original rebate request even though I met all of the terms. I think the packing list has an extra leading "0" on the UPC code, which was the only thing I could find that might have raised a flag (But should not have). I sent rebatestatus an e-mail and now I have a second entry for same rebate, but it only says that it's being processed at this point. What a hassle for a $25 rebate where I met all of the terms for the submittal.

Me too. I'm not tempted to pay $20.10 for shipping. They also disable Budget shipping method. grrr..

edit: Hoping for free shipping (coupon) to come back again before the current $25 rebate expires..

They bumped the price up to $69.99 with a $25 MIR, BUT no free shipping. Maybe I should have bought it when it was $59 and no free shipping.
