Can we get generic ink w/ this printer? Also wouldn't it kinda suck to have 3 color inks together instead of separate?

RE:"Can we get generic ink w/ this printer?"

Yes.
monsterinkjets.com
megatoners.com
tylermartin.com

This is a good deal but a step below Canons i series printers with BCI-3 or 6 think-tanks. Quality of the prints is the same though.

RE:"when do printers ever come with a cable?"

A Canon printer from Sams club comes with a USB cable.

Most ink jet printer don't come with any cable except for power cable. But you have to read the "What's in the box" or "includes". Then you have the requirement like Windows XP / Mac / USB cable (not included). You must meet the requirement for the product to work correctly. Also a note is most printer (lazer and ink jet) comes with a STARTER cart. Which means you get the cheap and little ink/toner. If U need to buy extra or not is depend how much U use it. For the ink, as long as you don't open the plastic that tapped where the ink comes out, then it shouldn'y dry up.

By the way, this printer is out of stock. At least for me anyway.

I've never owned a cannon. Can you refill the ink carts with ink or is it like my epson that has a little chip on the cart itself so you CAN"T refill the ink cart. You have to buy a new generic one which is a little more expensive than refilling it myself. Thanks for any info.

Refilling Canon's BCI-3 and BCI-6 cartridges is easy. I've done it over a thousand times easy... the i560, i850, i860, i950, i960 etc use these.
I've even refilled the same BCI-3 cart over 100 times and it still works.

I've never refilled a BCI-24 cartridge that the i470 uses. It can be done though.

Neither uses a chip. Ink levels are read by a prism in the 3 and 6 cartridges and the tanks are clear.

If you need ink let me know.

If you need a great "all around" printer that does great photos I recommend the i560 for $89 at Costco.

Hey guys,

I have this printer. I got it from the buy.com deal a little while back.

Here's a brief overview:

The box and its content rule! Canon really knows user interface well. They've laid out everything very easily.

Pictures: Picture quality is great. Take note that I'm a student that printers just color text, some grainy pictures. I'm not into any hardcore media.

Text: B&W/Color text on draft mode is comparible in speed to a laser printer. It comes out _that_ fast.

Ink: DIRT cheap ink. *** you Lexmark/HP/Epson.

6 in 1 card feature: Cool, but I wont use it. I'm kind of annoyed with Window XP's persistent "Safely remove hardware" icon, especially since my laptop is limited in screen space.

Size: It's kind of big. That's one of my only complaints.

Software: BEST PRINTER SOFTWARE EVER. I have never in owning 10+ printers have seen such wonderful and useful software in my life. It even gives you the option of turning it off and printing via windows. *** you compaq!

USB cable: Yea, it doesn't come with it. Go get your own.

Hey guys...I really want to start refilling my own cartridges on the ink from this printer. Anyone have any guides or places I could buy the stuff from? Alternately, what's a good place to buy cheap generic ink for this printer? How long does it usually last? My black is already running low (I print a lot)

I bought one last month from buy.com and concur that this is a great printer. The text quality to me looks about as sharp as a laser, and the output is nearly as fast. My principal worry about inkjets like this is smudging. I've read elsewhere that the BCI-24 uses pigmented ink, unlike previous bubble-jets, and that this should make the print-outs more resistant to fading?

I'd used Lexmarks before this one and refilling them was both expensive and a mess. Even if you buy genuine Canon BCI-24 black cartridges they're under $8 each. My initial black cartridge (the printer also comes with an all-in-one color cartridge, which I've hardly used) seemed to last only about 100 pages, perhaps because I was printing pages with a lot more than 5% coverage. Standard cartridge holds 7 ml. of ink. They seem to be designed to require more frequent replacement. I just ordered a batch of generic cartridges from megatoners.com. Black cartridges there cost only $1.30 -- hardly worth refilling your own at that low of a price. I'll let you know what I think of the quality.

The printer software is wonderful. You can preview and zoom all your printouts on the screen so you don't waste paper and ink if you don't like what you see. My only complaint is that drivers aren't available for Linux and for earlier (non-USB) versions of Windows (95/NT). Also, the printer carrriage seems to makes a lot of noise (cleaning nozzles?) when preparing to print the first page, or after printing the last.

I haven't tested the card reader but for photo buffs this feature alone could justify the price of the printer.

I had been looking for a new printer. After exclusively owning HP's, I made the mistake of buying a Lexmark last time. Never again. Generic ink didn't work well for me and I got tired of spending $60 to replace the two ink cartridges.

After missing out on the Buy.com deal, I bought this printer on BF from Staples.com. #1 factor for me is the cheap price to replace the ink tanks. Even Canon brand is less that $8 for black and less than $20 for color. I also like the idea of the built in memory card slots.

I have not used it much yet, but I will agree with the positive reviews in this thread. Seems like a great printer for the price and ink is cheap. I like it.

It's on sale again at Staples Dec. 14 - Dec. 20: $99.98 - $50 rebate = $49.98 - whatever coupons you can find.
BTW, be sure to check your local area sale ad to be sure it is available for you too.

Now, I'm real curious to hear y'all's experiences with using generic ink with this printer and where to getthe best for quality/price.

Since those Canon BCI-24 black cartridges are so small and only last 100 pages, $8 for Canon OEM ink is hardly a bargain. In my opinion, the only way to save on ink costs with these printers is to use the cheapest tanks or refill them. These $1-2 cartridges might be okay for black, but never seem to be as good in color. So, you end up going to better generics that cost $3-5. By then, you realize that the Canon i560 is a better bargain in the long run because their tanks are much bigger and cost about the same as the BCI-24's. If you rarely print and the price difference between the i470 series and the i560 is large, then these printers are a good deal. However, the i560 only costs $83 after rebate. So, if you plan on using decent generics or OEM, you will make up the price difference after a few cartridges.

I wouldn't say that I print rarely exactly, but I don't do lots and lots of printing. I can see where 100 pages will last me awhile so I think it is a good deal. I am just so tired of spending $25 - $30 for replacement cartridges. I would even rather spend $8 3 different times then have to shell out $25 all at once. When I spend that much at once, it just burns me up to think about how much of my money these printer companies are getting after I bought their "disposable" printer. LOL. $8 at a time makes it easier to swallow I guess.

Also, since these are just ink tanks .... no print head or chips .... they should be easy to refill. I've never messed with refilling cartridges, but if its that easy, maybe the generic ones will be ok.

Like I said, anyone with any actual experience with generic inks for these, please post results.

I just purchased this online. When do I get the rebate form? Does it come with the printer when it arrives or should I be able to print the rebate form off of the net? I see a link to the rebate form but it is a dead link. Any ideas?

I'm using the cheap Monsterinkjet refills in this printer with O_Depot glossy paper and color pictures look great. I didn't have any problems with smudging/running of colors like some other printers with generic cartridges. You can set the ink dry time longer on this printer if needed too. At $1.30/$1.80 a cartridge don't even bother trying to refill these.

This is an awesome printer at $100 muchless $35.

Instead of the paper clips if you are feeling charitable go for the "City of Hope $1.00 Donation" item #424369 instead.

Thats great. I always feel so guilty when they ship my paperclips separately in a big box full of padding.

UPDATE:

I just took a leap of faith, and ordered from MonsterInkjets.com

Subtotal: $25.53
Shipping: $0.00
Handling: $2.50
TOTAL: $28.03

Wtf is a handling charge? That's like a BS way of tricking you it's free shipping.

But take a look at the following:

Canon BCI-24 Black Inkjet Tank (6881A003) (11 x $1.29) $14.19

Canon BCI-24c Compatible Inkjet cartridge ink Tank (Color) (6 x $1.89) $11.34

I'm getting ELEVEN black cartridges and SIX colors for $25. Over $25 orders have free shipping, so holy crap!
Even this works out, I'm tempted to buy just to save money on ink!

Uh, those are posted on here all the time for $5. Someone paying $25 is getting ripped off.

FYI, you can buy extremely cheap cables here.
Here is what I believe this printer would use for $4.95.
