How are you ssuposed to get both rebates if the office depot one reuiqres the original UPC and the canon requires the original upc??

edit:::NM, i just reread the fine print on the OD rebates and a photocopy of the UPC is acceptable

Sweet, picked up the Pixma iP4000 for $119.99 OTD, so $128.84 after [7.375%] tax.

$70 in MIR takes it down to $57.84....not bad in my opinion. I wasnt' about to try and price match to fry's $99.99 OTD price, but I suppose I could....but I dont have a copy of their paper ad, only the electronic one on the San Jose Mercury News website.

xsquid - thanks a lot for the great info, that saves me a lot of time

What do you think about getting 50-packs of canon photo paper plus glossy 4x6's at Amazon for $7 each, free Super Saver shipping? Isn't it supposed to be better than the 3rd party papers or are the results equivocal in your experience? Thanks so much again

Of the canon papers I really like the Photo paper plus glossy better than the Photo paper pro. The Glossy photo paper is crappy in my opinion. That being said I like the Office depot and Ilord papers just as good as, any of the canon papers. I use the IJG ink which is so close to canon that you can change one cart at a time when you switch and as Ethan found in his tests it's even better with the OD paper. One thing that all the papers that I have named is that they are porous paper. Canon's work much better on porous paper and do not work as well on swellable paper like hp, Kodak, etc. It's not (nor is any dye ink) moisture resistant on those papers anyway.
Some have said the epson paper at costco is really good on the canons and priced good also, but between OD and iloord I've not found the need to try it (there's no costco here anyway, just sams).

That all being said I highly suggest you try small packs of all of it them first and decide what you like the best. Everyone has preferences so just try all of them and see what YOU like best. I can swear which one I like best, but your opinion may be totally different. Everyone is different.

Just thought I would add this, paper weights. Notice the three I like the best are also the heaviest:

245gsm Canon photo paper pro
270gsm Canon photo paper plus glossy
165gsm Glossy photo paper
260gsm The Office depot paper I mentioned above
250gsm Ilford smooth gloss

My iP3000 does a pretty good job with Kodak Presentation Plus paper and there are settings suggestions on the Kodak site for lots of popular printers with their paper. If they don't have the iPs listed yet, use the settings for the i560 with the iP3000 and the i860 for the iP4000. That should get you in the ballpark.
. http://www.swiftink.com has pretty good Canon ink.

good advice, the paper is pretty cheap anyways, never more than $7 for 50 packs of OD of Canon PPP, so its worth comparing. And I'll definitely pickup a 100 pack of that Illord paper you mentioned and have someone cut it up for me.

By the way, if you cut your 4x6's or 5x7's a little less than perfectly, what happens when you are printing borderless on a sheet that is less than 4" for instance, does ink get sprayed inside the printer? Thanks again.

YES

Every inkjet printer that prints borderless has over spray. There is a sponge that runs the width of the paper that collects the inks.

Just as bigempty says there is overspray with every printer that does true borderless. I havn't researched the pixma's much, but I know for certain the s900 and s9000's have a waste tank which is a cotton type pad that covers the bottom vf the printer. The sponge bigempty mentions has holes below it where ink goes so it can hold a lot of ink. I had my s9000 apart before and cleaned mine out and washed the pad, but it's normally something you shouldn't have to worry about.

I just looked in my manual and it does mention the waste tank "ink absorber" and the code for it being full. When I took my s9000 apart I could tell there was far more ink coming from cleaning (because the ink was just below the pump that sucks out the ink for cleaning) than further over where it would be for borderless overspray. I almost all borderless because almost all of my printing is photo's.

Kinko's has been very good with their cuts, they have a big machine they place it in and the cuts are very precise. You can even cut several packs at a time if you want.

great deal, thx OP. picked up ip4000 last night, $130 including tax, $70 printer+PC rebate printed out at the register, but the $50 OD rebate didn't, so I am printing that from OD website. tried it and loved it, the quality of the 4x6 photo is great, and it prints really fast.

Debating whether to pick one up. I already have two IP3000's which do a great job. I really don't need it, but that is a good deal.

Its like getting the printer for free and paying for the ink if you decide to go with the iP3000.

Thanks OP. This really is a great deal. I picked it up and used a $15 off $75 coupon I got in the mail. Total with taxes came out to be $112 so after $70 rebates it'll cost me only $42. Needed new ink for my HP anyways so basically getting a really good printer for that price.

Just as a caution: don't trust the yellow sale price tags Office Depot has posted in the store. The one for the IP5000 said the sale (and rebates) expired on 5/31 but when I asked a sales clerk, I was told it was still good for the IP5000 and IP4000.

What printer did you buy ? OD had a $50 rebate and Canon's $70 rebate. I Bought 2 IP3000 and 2 IP4000s which in the end it will all have cost me -$4.

I just got this, make sure you ask whoever checks you out to print both rebates the $20 and $50. The dumb old man who was helping me on the floor of the Office Depot flatly denied the existance of the $50 rebate, and said he'd just sold one that only printed out the $20 at checkout, well I had to have the clerk manually print out the $50 rebate from the internet because it doesn't print automatically, but its totally legit. Here's the link to the actual $50 rebate they can print out for you:

link <--- go here and search SKU: 714104

looks like the nutcases at fatwallet are combining this with various price matches to get paid for buying this, which is really sick, but whatever. For $50 you are basically just paying for the inktanks with this awesome printer. This deal is soo hot you should really consider it if you haven't yet.

Yes, you have to tell them to print it out or you won't get it. I had a young girl that was completely lost, had to get someone else to print it out.

Yup, my cashier had to go on the comp and print the $50 rebate for me.

Just got the last one at my local OD in Oakland on the last day of the deal, phew!

The FW thread doesn't really explain how to get -$12...only FAR. There was a -$50 deal (part of the $20 rebate [$70 total]) to make it FAR due to a supposed misprint, which they must have corrected early at the beginning of the deal b/c I didn't see any mistake.

Hey guys,
Maybe a tad off topic, but I think you'll want to hear this.
As most of you know, Canon PIXMA Printers have the capability to print directly to printable CD/DVD's (I have an IP4000 and mine prints nearly perfect discs)
This capability is disabled in the American versions but not in the European models.
A few of us got together and discovered a simple way to enable CD/DVD printing on these printers. The two parts you need (the cd Tray and the insert for printing mini-cd/dvd's are not sold in the US).
Well, myself and some of the people from a similar Forum have found a way to not only enable CD/DVD printing but also I have worked with some European contacts and are selling the parts needed to print cd/dvd's.
The full descriptions on how to enable your Canons and the links to the software as well as how to get the parts can be found here: http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=36631&forum_id=40&page=40
If you would like info on ordering the Tray and Insert, email me at canon_tray@charter.net and I'll be glad to set you up.
Finally, after much research and hours of contacting friends in Europe we have finally made this a reality.
Please email me at the above address if you care for a set of parts and links to instructions on turning on this function in US versions.
Regards,
Blake

Yeah, I got this deal and immediately found an authentic Canon tray to go with it, and it works perfectly. Some people have had success making their own trays from cardboard or plastic as well. You need to apply a small registry patch (or edit the entry yourself) to allow CD printing with the US drivers, and then do a few short steps with the printer in "service mode," to set it to function like a non-US model. Here's a nice page that sums it all up pretty well: http://pixma.cjb.net

Scattered instructions and tons of discussion are all in that thread CanonTray linked. The only other thing you have to do is properly set up whatever application you are using to print from so it aligns correctly. Search google newsgroups for the words "groeneveld pixma" for the right settings in Nero Cover Designer.

Inkjet printable CD/DVD media are thought to be better for reading than if you stick on a disc label yourself, since it will add weight and maybe not be perfectly centered. I think this mainly applies to DVD's where the margin for error is smaller than with CD's. So for DVD's, get printable ones, and make sure they are "hub-printable" so you can get the maximum printing area.

Thanks Sqvid & others.
One of the most informative and best threads I've read.
Thank goodness that Capitalism has forced Canon to nearly give this (one of the best) printer away.
(Would also like to publicly thank the Chinese Prison Kids labor force who made it all possible.)
