Canon has some HOT deals on refurbished DSLR kits. Tax most place, but free shipping.

Canon has a reputation for fantastic quality refurbs, most describing them as like new still in box. They come with a 1-yr warranty. Deal pulled from one of those other deal sites, but I didn't want my Anandtech friends to miss out.

EOS Rebel T5 EF-S 18-55mm IS II Lens Kit Refurbished - $199.99+tax+FS

Rebel T5 EF-S 18-55mm IS II & EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Kit Refurbished - $219.98+tax+FS (Looks to be OOS now)

EOS Rebel SL1 with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens Kit Black Refurbished - $249.99+tax+FS

LOTS MORE...

I picked up three of the Rebel EOS T5 2-lens kits to give as Christmas gifts. Note this is the T5, not the T5i which has a few more features. The SL1 is also a nice camera for the money. Either of these should keep most non-pro shooters happy for a long time.

Edit: some deals going OOS fast!

bump this has been going on since Sunday. I ordered a SL1 2 Lens kits for $269.99. Going to sell the extra lens for $50-80 local and have around $200 in a SL1.

Would the $199 dslr be a good buy for a newbie photographer? Been looking at getting one for my wife but not sure. $199 is a great price though.

It depends - is she willing to invest the effort in learning how to use the camera to its fullest capability? If not, you'd be better off buying her an equivalent priced superzoom point-n-shoot and call it a day. On the other hand, if she seriously wants to learn about photography with DSLRs without investing a lot of money, then it isn't a bad place to start. Granted, it is a cheap DSLR camera, but if she invests the time to learn to really use it she'll get better results than she would from a point-n-shoot. Plus, the lenses carry forward to new bodies, so she can upgrade to a new body, then slowly build up a higher quality lens collection over time if she gets serious about it. Your next investment would then be software like Lightroom she could use to begin to learn photo editing.

Also, if you wanted one of the kits, you can build one yourself by adding a refurb lens from the lens section. For instance, using the lenses shown in the kits, to add a little more reach than the default 18-55mm lens has:

EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens Refurbished - $109.99

EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Refurbished - $169.99

EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Refurbished - $79.99 (no image stabilization, though, so likely most useful off of a tripod).

If you want the SL1 or something a little higher end, like a T5i/T6i, there are several after-rebate deals at Adorama or B&H for the $369-$450 range (large rebates, like $350 or more, are involved though).

keep a eye out their stuff goes in and out of stock. Got my SL1 today and even though I haven't tried it yet if it works as good as it looks I'll be happy(looks new).

Are you talking about with this particular sale or in general during the whole year?

What are returb prices like normally?

It's a nice camera for a newbie shooter, great bang for the buck. It's got auto settings that will let her get shooting right away, as well as more manual controls for when she's ready to get a bit more creative.

It's not professional gear, but a good photographer could produce professional level images with it, except for maybe sports and stuff in really low light when you can't use a flash.

Add a good flash to this basic kit and I could have done 90% of my job with it back when I was as a newspaper photojournalist in Los Angeles.

I've only been watching for a couple months but the T5 and SL1 are roughly $50 cheaper with this deal then usual. I've seen stuff go in and out of stock during this and previous deals this whole month. They had weekly deals all month but this one has been going on for nearly a whole week now. I think they are just running it till they run out of stock.

I ended up getting the T5i w/55-250mm lense kit. It's pricier than I originally intended to spend, but I'm excited to start using it. I think it'll be a camera both of us will enjoy learning how to use and take along on our vacations etc.

Just curious how long did it take for Canon to ship stuff out? I ordered Sat., my status still shows "Inventory Fulfilled". Payment has already been taken from my acct since Monday.

I keep seeing that the T5/T5i/SL1 is a good "beginner" DSLR. What are the major features you gain as you move into intermediate level DSLRs? My understanding of SLRs has always been that the lenses are the most important part of the package.

I'll speak to the Nikon system, as that's what I'm most familiar with.

Nikon has three consumer cameras,
D3300 (entry), D5500 (mid) and D7200(prosumer).

All three share damn near identical sensors - the critical part that does the imaging. Therefore, it's theoretically possible to get equally quality photos in the same situation with either of these cameras.

The key difference in the bodies comes down to controls and additional features.

Examples of controls include extra buttons / dials for direct access to certain options.
Examples of features include larger buffers for continuous shooting, and faster shooting speeds and better body build ( magnesium, weather sealing, etc).
The better body also has a better, brighter viewfinder.

If you want a DSLR to just "take better photos", and you know yourself that it isn't going to become a hobby, then the D3300 or maybe the D5300 make sense.

When you're looking at something like the D7200 or above, you wouldn't be asking this question so it's moot.

And, yes, the glass that you buy is a much better investment for photo quality than the body.

These $200 Canon refurbs that people have been buying are terrific cameras for the target audience. Would they get better photos if they stick $500, $1000, $2500 lenses on them? Absolutely. But most people aren't about to do that on the basic bodies.

AT has a "Digital and Video Cameras" forum if you have more specific questions about cameras or how to get the best out of them.

I ordered last Sunday and it went out last Tuesday but I got in early on the deal. Since you ordered near the end of the deal and they likely got hammered it might take them a bit to get your camera out.

Yea I think that's what's going on. I was hoping to get it by end of this week since we're going to Disneyland but that's not gonna happen. Hopefully I get before xmas at least lol.

Thanks for the info! I used to have a film SLR camera and loved it. I really enjoyed changing ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. I've wanted to get into DSLRs and at this price point, a T5 really makes sense for me.
