I can't believe nobody has responded yet, but me thinks this is a very hot deal. Too bad it's still too much dough for me.

anyone have a clue how this camera compares to the Olympus C-3040 3.34MP camera? i'd like something with a smaller form factor.

As a S30 owner I can say that the was the BEST camera for the price until the S45 hit the market a few months ago. 3.2 MP, 3x Optical zoom, and more shooting modes than you can count. I paid $400 a year ago for this camera with a 16 MB CF card, and that was a bargain at the time. Pick it up!

Edit: yes, it's also very compact.

Unless you will purchase add on lenses or flashes for the Olympus, the S30 is the better camera. As far as 3mp consumer cameras with fixed lenses, the S30 is the best out there.

The S30 is a great camera but I wouldn't compare it to the C-3040. While the C-3040 offers slightly fewer features than the S30, it offers more photographic functionality with much better macro capabilities, possible add-ons, and greater aperture range. The S30 though is smaller (not exactly pocket-sized though), uses CF cards, has an AF-assist lamp, uses Li-ion rechargable batteries (they don't discharge as fast as nimh).

The main part of what makes the S30 so great is the number of features on smaller camera.

I'm not a big fan of sub-compact cameras because they lack the functinality of full-compact cameras and aren't that much easier to carry around as comared to the Canon S230, Olympus C-50, and Sony DSC-P9.

As far as 3mp consumer cameras with fixed lenses, the S30 is the best out there

As far as what the best 3.X MP camera is out there. Most experts will not hesitate and say either the Olympus C-730 OR Fuji Finepix S602.

The C-730 has a 10x unstabalied zoom, making it a lot less funictional than it otherwise could have been. Additionally, the C-730 has noise galore, the S30 puts it to shame in image quality.

The S-602 is a fine camera, but it's considerd a prosumer camera which would not put it in the same class as the Canon S30. Additionally, it costs $400 more than the Canon S30.

Man, this is not hot. I picked up my S45 for $349 shipped from dell. Don't ask me how just go to the wallet and do a search. Ya, I didn't get a 128 MB card, it only comes with a 32 MB. I bought a 128 last week for $25 from staples. They are dropping in price. I also picked up a 512 MB card from dell for $98.

actually, in one respect is the s30 even better than the s45. it has iso 800 ability. well, that's not very useful, because of the amount of noise, but it's nice to actually have it

The lens on the 3040 is superior. f: 1.8 the s30 is nice though. but lets not get silly.

Yadda, yadda, yadda

You can get it for this price. You just have to be patient and look everyone once in a while. I have gotten three of these cameras at this price. Things go on sale and you can get them cheaper. Just wanted to point that out. These are the forums for hot deals and this is not hot. Its average.

F1.8 is quite nice, but the image quality of the S30 is still superior.

I never really understood why the S-class sub-compact Canon cameras are so popular. Image quality is great (I used to own an S30), but I couldn't get some of the results I wanted because of the lens limitation and the time it took to modify fully zoomed shots because of the S30's barrel distortion. But don't get me wrong, this camera at this price is a VERY VERY good deal as it will give you picture quality very similar to the S45 at a much lower price.
