I was told by the sales person that Fry's is no longer going to carry this model.

1.4V Max. Is this good for overclocking? I don't know. Some have a lower voltage.

Code: BX80546RE2400CSL87J VERSION: C93259-001
Code: BX80546RE2400CSL7JV VERSION: C81344-003

Is one better than the other? Don't know.

Celeron Ds are AWESOME overclockers. We're talking about 3GHz easy, with many hitting 3.5GHz on air, and approaching 4GHz with voltage.

How do the models with lower voltages compare? I never noticed that difference before.

will a cellery D work in an old 400/533 FSB mobo? (asus p4s8x-x with sis 648 chipset)?

I'm 90% sure they will because theyre only 533 FSB... but you might need a bios update?

This is indeed a hot deal, retail celeron D 320 is selling for around $70 online. It is a good thing I stopped by Frys on my way home and I picked up two celeron D 320s priced at $44.90 each. Hoperfully I'll reach at least 3.2Ghz on both, time to sell my old celeron 2.0 Ghz. Both celereon Ds have the same batch number and were manufactured in Philippines.

There's only two left in Sacramento Frys btw when I left .

Thanks OP.

I'm pretty sure that the motherboard would have to support Prescott since the Celeron Ds are Prescott core based.

I just put one of the celly Ds in a $40 Foxconn MB made a decent system for not much $$$

Got mine here 2.93GHz for $76 and about $7 shipping.

Celeron D 340 (2.93GHz) oem

There was another tread acouple of weeks ago with this in it. I think people were not wanting to order from these guys because of the site not being well known but I got mine and so did a co-worker of mine with no problems.

I just checked both processors and both are E0. According to overclockers forums, these steppings are the latest and have the best overclocking ability. Manuf date is 01/2005 and intel's website does not even have these steppings listed, I found out that SL87J are E0s from a different site.

OP, keep the SL87J! You wont regret it but it's always best to try both before returning one.

Your still better off getting a Sempron 2200+ for the same price. Stock speed is better and overclocking potential is just as good (Semprons overclock exceptionally well because, like the Celeron, it lacks power hogging, heat producing cache.)

Just my oppinion, I've always favored AMD processors over Celerons... High-clock P4's and Pentium M's...if the application permits, are more justified than an Athlon.

I agreed until the D came out. Much better than older cellys.

The first one is better.

SL87J is an E0 stepping processor vs D0 for the SL7JV linked above. Both seem to have the same 73W TDP. The SL87J seems to overclock better from a few quick web searches.

edit: it's possible to get E0 stepping SL7JV if it's a "pre-conversion" CPU.

Not really. AMD re-did the Sempron PR to coincide with Celeron (128KB L2 cache versions) performance. The Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8GHz, 266MHz FSB, 256KB L2) is much better than the Sempron 2200+ (1.5GHz, 333MHz FSB, 256KB L2). The Sempron 2200+ is much, much inferior to the Celeron D 2.4GHz.

Even overclocked (333MHz->400MHz FSB @ 1.8GHz + PC3200 memory), like I did to the cheap Sempron 2200+ system I bought on BF, is still pretty slow. Under the old AMD ratings that overclocked processor would still have under a "2400+" rating. The Sempron PR is inflated now.

This is getting HOTTER(also literallly). I opened one of retail celerons and I was able to reach 4Ghz on stock 1.4V vcore and stock air cooling, 50C idle. It booted at 4 Ghz but I doubt it is stable at 1.4V. I dont have any harddrive or OS setup on my new P4P800SE mobo yet so I can check only if it boots however memtest runs ok though. Hopefully I dont hit a wall with my memory or motherboard. I am chicken to increase the voltage yet to test for stability until I get a high end cooler or water cooling(which I dont prefer).

Time to test the other one . . .

I'll post some benchies once I build my new system. Now, who said that celeron D was inferior? . . . I'll compare my celeron D against my athlon XP mobile 2200+ 35W running at 2.4 Ghz. I might as well compare it also against my P4 2.4B @ 3.4 Ghz and Athlon XP 1700+ @ 2.3 Ghz.

Awesome. I just picked up a retail one (SL87J) at Fry's B&M.

All the Celeron Ds except the 2.93GHz are on clearance, both OEM and retail. The retail Celeron D 2.53GHz was $59.90, not as good of a deal as the 320. They also had the P4 2.8GHz Northwood retail for $119.90 (OOS... like the AXP 2400+ 2GHz last week for $35 ), so that might be worth checking out for others.

Not quite. A Celeron D is a cut-down Prescott with 1/4 the L2 cache of the big brother, a low FSB, and no Hyperthreading. A Sempron is a full-fledged Athlon XP whose only downside is an overly enthusiastic PR rating and a somewhat overclock-hindering 333mhz FSB.

Remember, before the 512K cache Barton core, all Athlon XP's 2400+ and below (plus some 2600+ units) had 256K L2 cache. A Sempron is simply AMD using up the latest stepping Thoroughbred B cores that would otherwise go on Athlon XP's with lower PR ratings.
