I45 North in Houston Fry's.

Thanks OP, I scored a boxed 320 (2.4G) for 44.90 and its the SL87J code. I could not find any of the mobos for the <$20 range other than the undesirable M950s. Instead I went with the ECS 646FX-A for <$40. Its the one the bundle with all their combos. SO by mobo/cpu combo Boxed Celeron 320 (2.4G) ran $84.80 which is around the price watch price for the boxed celly.

I grabbed a OCZ 3200 512M memory stick to go with it. I'm planning on building two computers into my desk space where my current AMD XP box is. So I'll have two 'puters, one intel and the other AMD with a KVM switch between. So I can decrypt/shrink/render/burn or whatever on one machine while I game on the other.

I grabbed 2 of these from compgeeks ($27.90 + shipping):

http://www.qdigrp.com/qdisite/eng/products/platinix2pe800pro.htm

The postitives are that it supports decent overclocking (1MHz FSB and voltage) and uses an intel chipset, the negatives are that it only has unofficial 800MHz FSB/PC3200 support and AGP4x. Otherwise the ECS 648FX-A and P2PE/800 Pro specs are similar.

A couple of things I like about the QDI board are FSB jumpers to force a default FSB and the diagnostic LEDs.

thanks op and puppyfriend. Got the last m952 mobo, and a bare proc. in austin. Guy didn't think they had any, but checked and they had like 6. Is there any disadvantage to buying the bare processor, other than the warranty? like do I get better chance of having a good overclocker with the retail?

got 2 Retail CPUs at Concord Frys. I had called them earlier this week and they said OOS over the phone. Just happened to stop by today and they had ~25 in stock and i picked up 2. Also, the PC Chips M952 motherboard was $9.90 at this store, so also picked up 2 of those.

EDIT: Thanks OP for the very nice deal.

Mmmmm. Start looking for a dually mobo. Just thinking of two of these at 3.2 or 3.5 makes me want to head for my local Frys. I live close to two Frys here in "The OC".

hmm...now you got me thinking too...you think 2 of these will be better/faster than a single AMD Athlon 64 setup ?

"Is there any disadvantage to buying the bare processor, other than the warranty?"
have to buy a fan/thermal solution

"like do I get better chance of having a good overclocker with the retail?"
not in my opinion... depends on other factors like cooling, series, etc(?)

3yr warranty + heatsink and fan. From what I have read, Intel's stock heatsinks are pretty decent and you can often overclock to pretty good levels with them plus they are quiet. Definately worth the extra $5 for sure.

The fan that comes with the retail package I would have payed $20 to $30 a few yrs ago. Looks up to the task and would not need to be replaced unless you are doing something serious like water cooling.

I thought the bare vs retail debate concerning overclockablity was declared a tie. No real difference.

Granolith Surfer: I have not heard that Celeron D or P4 in general can be coverted for dually usage. Xeons are for that. I do know AMD XP series can be converted. Me, I'm going for not a dual but two CPUs (XP and Cel D) on two mobos, two power supplies, video, memory, etc with a KVM switch between. Then I can download/encrypt/render on one machine and game on the other. The heavy tasks won't get done any faster, as they might in a daully setup, but I can truely do two things at once without interfering with the other. And put the tsk to the best CPU for it. Some if not alot of video related stuff I do like the o/ced Celeron D.

craneo, are you aware if the celeron d is favored for driving a compiler? Which processes really favor an oc'd deleron?
I picked up 5 of these things and maybe wouldn't have if it weren't for their oc'ing abilities, which means I must jump some hurdles to make my purchase payoff.

hurdles:
1. buy the d's cheap. done
2. locate motherboards that will provide a stable platform for these oc'd d's . Not done. Why? It seems the 865PE chipset mobos is still pricey. It's tough to pay into an ASUS P4P800SE for almost $100 for a $45 cpu. Yet, I feel uncomfortable buying a mobo based on a SiS 661FX or SiS 655FX chipset.
I may return atleast 2 of the cpu's soon.

I got some of my info on Celly D from: New Budget Processors Comparison: Intel Celeron D vs. AMD Sempron Although the Celly D is not o/ced in the video section, the Celly D does quite well. But the gaming and some of the other benchy it is so-so.

The other xbitlab review is Intel Celeron D CPU: Budget Processors from Intel Acquire Prescott Core shows their o/c to 3.8G (which I think is about .2G more than what I'm expecting) keeping neck to neck with the P4 3.2G and pulls away with a fair lead in the audio and video tests. It even wins some of the Cinebench tests.

Not bad for a $45 CPU!

What about the Intel 845PE chipset? I've seen the Asus P4PE2-X for less than $60. Also Via makes some chipsets for the P4 that might also work.

King, I personally hate to get refurbs. They may be great values, but is it worth the pissibility they could be flawed?

Hoperfully I'll reach at least 3.2Ghz on both, time to sell my old celeron 2.0 Ghz. Both celereon Ds have the same batch number and were manufactured in Philippines.

There's only two left in Sacramento Frys btw when I left .

Thanks OP.

Shoot me a PM when you do decide to sell that 2GHz Celeron. I need a cheap Socket 478 CPU to stick in an eMachine.

That refurb board is a good deal even though you don't like it.

Albatron PX865PE Pro review

Notice how well the 845PE w/single channel DDR400 does vs dual channel DDR333 on the 875 and 865. That's what i'm running on that cheap $27.90 QDI board at compgeeks I linked above. The only negative is that to do 800MHz FSB you need CL2.5 or faster DDR400 memory. The first CL3 DIMM I used wouldn't even POST.

I don't think Celeron Ds' can run as SMPs. Unless I can find articles to back it up its a no go. The cpus must have the capability to work together. Sorry to mislead here.

I'm curious if anyone has been to the manhattan beach location and knows if they're any celerons left. I'd call but I'm sure the incompetent sales associate would tell me they didn't have any left even if they did.

It doesn't look like it. I just went to the Woodland Hills one and saw the inventory screen. All the locations had 0 or a couple. The guy had to call into the cage to see if any were left... only some open box ones were available in my local Fry's.
