If you're looking for a light laptop and not interested in a Celeron, you can get a Dell laptop for ~$1000 depending on the options you want. I hated inspirons, but this is basically what used to be the Latitude line, i think, which is awesome and light. Excellent for a mobile power user that isn't too into 3d gaming.
Inspiron 600M
1.6Ghz, 32 mb vid, 14", 512 mb ram, cdrw/dvd, wifi b/g, 30 gb hd, ms xp home, free dell color printer.

Options: You can get less ram, dvd-it'll be cheaper; or more hd space, 64 mb vid ram, a better screen, faster processor-it'll be more expensive.
If you need bluetooth, get it later by calling Dell's customer service. They'll send you the module if you tell them you have an expired computer and don't have your service tag. (only $35 after tax/shipped)
Downsides: 14" screen, xga screen, some people don't like Dell.
I personally love Dell. My laptop HD crudded out on me a month ago with 3 weeks left on warranty. They had a new one in my hand the next day after a 5 minute phone conversation. I don't know of any other manufacturers that can accomodate that.
