This is kind of funky...Apparently CompUSA is NOT closing out *ALL*
books, just a lot of them. My local CompUSA had several tables of
closeout books (at $3.33 each), but there was also an aisle
of books that were not at closeout...

Got some goodies from the closeout table:

Adobe Acrobat 5.0 classroom in a book
OpenGL Game Programming (LaMothe)
Mastering Photoshop 6 (Sybex book)
Mastering XML Premium Edition (Sybex book)
XML Developer's Guide (Arciniegas)
Inside Dreamweaver 4 (Yerks, Pickett)
Real World Adobe Photoshop 6 (Blatner Fraser)

They were $3.33, not 0.88, but for current (2001 or 2000) books
on topics I care about, I'm not arguing. None of these books
rang up automatically at $3.33 (or 0.88 for that matter). The
cashier had to do an override for each one. But they were all
store stickered at $3.33.

In the not-marked-down aisle were some other Adobe program
manuals, Guide to Repairing PCs, some Microsoft texts and stuff
like that.

Well I score some of them in the Chicago Downtown store, after the cashier saw the price (0.01) she call the manager and he stared to check the price in the computer and told me that he couldn't sell it to me for that price then I show him the print outs that I had with me from the website showing the price of 0.88 and then he said that he had to check that so he went back to some room (probably just to bang his head against the wall or something because they removed the books from the website this morning) and came back and told the cashier to give them to me for 0.88 each and told me what great deal that was, ( not too happy ) and said thank you!

Usu. just lurk occasionally, and catch some good deals. For those interested the columbia, md store had a good selection at 11 am this morning. I politely inquired about the books and had no prob. He felt it just saved him the trouble of packing up and sending back. I had a printout of website prices with me. It did come up at .01 in his inventory, and he was surprised but did not seem to feel as if it was unusual. I was charged .88 each for a number of books I could use but could otherwise not afford. Thanks for the tip and hope this helps someone out.

Got back from Littleton, CO store, all items rang up as $.01!

16 books Total value was $1278.91, walked out for $.17 (had to pay a penny tax).

And no, I didn't get more than I needed, 1 of each. There were some still on the shelf,
but I doubt if they will last long, there was another Anandtecher that went through the
line previous to me... The clerks had a look of disbelief on their faces!

Just got back from the CompUSA in Paramus, NJ. There is still quite a few books left. I walked out with 10 books for .10c

When the manager saw that I was buying so many books (had a whole hand cart full) he said "i'll give you something for free"

i was like "ok"

so, he comes back with a paper that has the ccna virtual labs thing marked down to a penny and then hands it to the cashier... (i just watched with a big grin the whole time ) he scans it and he's like "hmm.. ok" and begins to scan each item in awe that all of them are 1 cent

then when the manager came back to get me a cart he saw me handing the cashier a dime and had a look on his face that was just indescribable... omg it was hilarious.. he didnt even say a word... and no, i didnt buy more than i needed!

go to the paramus compusa now to get in on this incredible deal! Now I may actually be able to pay for the damn tests, considering theyre so damn expensive!!

I think we were lucky. Items that come up at a penny are not supposed to be sold. I think these books were supposed to have the covers ripped off and returned to the publishers, so we were lucky!

My christmas shopping also cost me just 17 cents! This is without a doubt one of the finest deals I've ever encountered. Thanks to the kind souls who post to this great list!

I just went to another store and found all books were gone. I checked price on an item and found that they updated the price. The deal is over. Congratulations to all of those who got something. We saved a lot of money in Christmas gifts this year.

:|The CompUSA in Downer's Grove Illinois wouldn't PM when all the books I brought up there rang up as $19.99 each. I only had 4 books, 3 of which were Sybex, and the MCSE Core 4 book set. My total was around $130.00 and I told them to keep their books.

I was there an hour ago, all I managed to get were the DreamWeaver and Photoshop books, a cent each.
The cashier didn't even blink, nor did the girl checking out my till receipt as I left.

Shame I couldn't get any MSCE books, the shelves where quite empty, so either they'd taken the books off the shelf - or some other bargain hunters beat me too it (damned Java training kept me tied up till lunch).

So who managed to clean out South Cobb Pwky, Atlana's store then?

Just got back from the CompUSA in Chicago (Michigan and Chicago). Price checked quite a few books but of the ones I wanted, only the Prima Strat guides (Anachronox, Fallout Tactics, Startopia) and Peachpit Press's Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 rang up at $0.01. I even told the guy I thought they should be $0.88 but he just shrugged and gave me my change (for a nickel, heh). The Anachronox guide was priced on the shelf at $0.88.

just got back from Miami (Dadeland) location... went with 2 coworkers, we have all been talking about certifications and stuff lately so this was amazingly fortunate, previously were planning on buying the books together and sharing them around etc

anyways, picked up several books each, probably $500 worth each and paid $5 per book, so average $30 or so total
the best deal was the heavy as hell new riders ms win2k mcse study system $150 value for $5 =)

anyways, the managers were going ape-sh*t when we walked out with well over $1k worth of stuff for less than $100, and got busy clearing shelves so as to prevent anyone else from doing the same i assume, they were grumbling under their breaths about "not being aware of the price reduction, so its not my fault" and stuff, hah

but they got the manager involved so he gave us $5 ea which was ok, none of us are complaining... =)

First book I had didnt scan
Second book came up as 0.01
Cashier Immediatley Voids it
I say "But that is the correct price, it is listed as clearence"
She goes over to a computer on the side stays there for 20 seconds at the most and came back and says:
"sorry all three of these books are $98.96"
She didn't even look at the third book
I told her these books were listed as .88 on the web site, and that I had further checked to make sure they were in stock and that price in store, and all she would say is "web price is different from in store"
She kept repeating that no matter what i said
I had to get going to a class and didn't have time to stay and have her get a manager

In Austin TX, the CompUSA didn't have any .88 books today (Monday). Lowest price I found by having them scan the items at the register was $4.88, for the Coriolis Exam Prep/Cram series for Microsoft exams 70-210 (Windows 2000 Professional) 70-216 (Win2000 Network) and 70-220 (Win2000 Security Design).

Hey guys..thanks. I got the A+ Bible and Win ME Que book. $1.76. I printed out the sheet last night but forgot to take it with me to comp, those were the only titles I could remember and I didn't want to bring a stack up to the register for checking. None were marked for prices.

I had some luck at the Culver City store. Went in right when they opened and snagged the last two Making of Final Fantasy books (great holiday presents!), then I went back at lunch and picked up a copy of the Coriolis Network+ ExamCram book for myself and my boyfriend. Met some fellow anandtechers there right when the store opened - hi guys!

The first time around the cashier was puzzled by the price, but she called over to her manager a few aisles over and he said to sell it for what it rang up for ($0.01), so I gave her two pennies and went to work. She recognized me the second time around and just held out her hand...I actually didn't have anymore pennies, but fortunately my dad was with me and bailed me out. Would've been embarrasing to ask for change!

I was amused when I checked out the second time - there was a huge pile of MCSE/Cisco/A+/Network+ training books behind the counter; obviously books people brought up to be scanned and abandoned when they weren't marked down.
