i just built a new computer it has an athlon 2700 thoroughbred mounted in a MSI k7n2 delta2 motherboard cooled by a speeze heatsink w/fan. Speedfan shows a 65 degree celcius temperature for my CPU at about 15-25% CPU usage. What can be causing this?? My heatsink is the Masscool 80mm LED CPU Cooler for Socket A, Model "5F353B1L3GL" from new egg. I believe the temperature should be about 40 degrees celcius. i also have arctic alumina thermal compound between the heatsink and CPU, i believe i followed the installation directions to the T. Hope someone has an answer. thanks!

Actually that is BS, if that temp is accurate he should be worried now. As you always need to add at least 10c to the reported temp due to inaccuracies, that puts your temp at 75c at almost idle. Load temps could go as much as 10c more which would mean 85, this is right at the threshhold and WILL cause damage/rebooting.

I would first update the BIOS on your motherboard as it could just be reading errors. After that I would open the side of your case and see how your temps respond. If they lower alot then you need some better cooling in your case such as bigger/more CFM intake and exhaust fans. If this is the case leave the side off for the time being until you improve the cooling. I would also download Motherboard Monitor and see what it says as some monitoring programs don't work with some mobo's.

Report back the results you are getting trying these and other various reccomendations.

ok..... my case temperature is great it is almost perfectly constant at 35 degrees celcius with the case closed and i opened the case up to make sure that this was accurate and it was because i saw no drops in CPU temp.

i also downloaded the program to monitor heat that came specifically with my mobo and it states the same problem.

i am going to update my bios now and see what happens

i may just break down and get the thermalright SI-97 and a fan to replace my current heatsink..... could this be the problem?? i feel that the heatsink i have may not be up to par even though my chip isnt super fast.

i also ran a movie on my comp today and the temp monitor reached 76 degrees celcius so i think this is a problem even though one said it wasnt.

thanks for the help anymore help or opinions would be great too.

76 c when watching a movie is crazy, I am really doubting the accuracy of those readings. The temps should have changed at least slighty with the side open, if they did not then the problem probably lies with that heatsink. I would raelly think about getting a new one and again following the instructions on the arctic silver website for application. Another solution would be to put on the stock heatsink that came with the CPU (assuming you bought it retail) as even that should result in better temps.

Just a random question, did the heatsink you put on there have a thermal pad on the bottom that you did not remove before applying Arctic Alumina? If so, that might cause some serious heat buildup in there.

i flashed bios and that didnt help..

two programs show the same heat at the CPU and all other temps are fine..... the one program came directly with my mobo so imy guess would be that the temp is accurate...(by no means am i doubting you, but i feel that their software should be accurate).

i do not have a stock heatsink, i bought the chip OEM.

The heatsink came without a heat pad but it did have some other compound on it, but i thoroughly removed it with a coffee filter and high proof rubbing alcohol making extra careful to not scratch the surface.

it seems as if i am running out of options guess it is time to buy a top of the line heatsink and see if that works if there arent any other options.

the temp with the side open may have dropped a degree or two but nothin significant, the case is very well cooled.

thanks for all your help spike any other help would be greatly appreciated.

This just seems crazy. I know that since I have an Abit board, my temps could be as much as 10c cooler than the software is reporting and that Asus boards tend to report a little on the low side, but I don't know about MSI boards. I really think those temps are either false, or that HSF is a POS. I'm sorry I have not been much help, all I can say now is get a new HSF as you exhausted the things that usually fixed my heat problems.

i also tried motherboard monitor and it peaked out my temp right away it warned that it was to hot and should be shutdown.....

thanks again spike, you gave me more ideas than i had on my own...... looks like a new heatsink and maybe a temp/fan controller..... good thing i have a website like anandtech to show me which ones i should get.

This is the controller I have

Cooler Guys Controller

Right now I have it hooked to my intake and exhaust 120mm's and my CPU 80mm and keep them all at 7-8ish volts. As for a heatsink, I would look at this

This paired with a good Panaflo 80mm M1A or H1A will do your CPU wonders. Here is the compatibility guide for this heatsink. It looks like yours is on the list, at least the K7N420 Pro is.

If you want a smaller but still good cooler then look at the Thermalright SI-97 you talked about before, definitly a good HSF.

thanks i went ahead and got the SI-97 and and 92mm high speed panaflo to go with it and i also got the Enermax UC-A8FATR4 had great reviews everywhere i looked and it is more the style is was looking for.

I went with the SI-97 because it was lighter weight (bonus because of the clip style that holds it on) and had very high reviews.

I appreciate all your help and ill be sure to let you know if this fixes my problem, thanks spike
