This isn't correct. Memory on the "spot" market is sold and purchased as individual chips. When they say 256Mb (notice it's megabit) DDR is going for $3, they mean $3 for a single chip. So to make a 256MB (megabyte) DIMM with 256Mb chips, you'll need 8 of them. 8 x $3= $24 for the cost of the chips. This doesn't include the cost of putting them on a PCB board and testing/packaging, etc. It's easy to see why these guys are losing their shirts.

Your point is well taken. On a sidenote I am not sure you need 8 chips anymore. Many newer chips are 256x16 - thus you would need only 4

Yes the ram is clocked from you motherboard, so if you are clocking at the PC2100 rate (133MHz), then the ram will operate there. Heck, if you want to run it at 10Hz, that'd work to. Your 'puter would super suck, but you could do it.

The rating just means the MAX speed the ram was tested at the factory and GUARANTEED to operate at. Just like the Athlon XP. You can buy a 3000+ and run it at 500MHz. not sure why you'd want to, but you could.
