Anybody know what are the improveents with the update and what is the maximium good range of this router before and after the update.

I don't need one but it is a great deal. I have a 704 which was always great and a 604 which when new was horrile. Now with the newer firmware versions it works great. I consider D-link to be one of my favorite companies and only linksys may surpass it in quality at least for models with good firmware. So if anyone has problems check for the latest firmware. It makes a big diffrence with newer models.

i bought it the first time they had this deal and... #1, dont be fooled it only has 1 antenna in the back!! and #2, i often lose my internet connection, dont know if its my wireless lan card, or this router...

#1 I have 4 of these and each one has 2 antennas.
#2 Update your firmware. I'm using version 2.2 and don't have any dropped connections to speak of. My laptop resumes the connection fine whether in standby or hibernating.

Has anyone configured this router to work in conjunction with other wireless routers (i.e. extend the range of an existing 802.11b network or have two separate 802.11b networks - like basement & main floor, etc.)?

This is a good deal. I probably would have purchased this had I known about it before. I have the Microsoft MN-500 myself, but really haven't had chance to use it due to problems getting cable installed at the new house we moved to.

Some routers have the 2nd antenna inside the router. I believe the MN-500 also has the 2nd antenna inside. As for the encryption, I believe the 256bit encryption is propietary, meaning you won't get that unless your using another D-Link product.

To clear up some misconceptions, diversity (2 antennas) is a RECEIVER technology. It doesn't "send the same signal twice" as someone in this thread mentioned. And the newer revison of the DI-614+ has 2 antennas as well: one external 2dBi omnidirectional antenna and one quarter-wave internal antenna.

"Enhanced 802.11b" or "802.11b+" is based on the Texas Instruments ACX100 DSP. So any router or wireless card (whether it's D-Link, US Robotics, SMC, Trendware, etc.) using this chipset is capable of 256-bit encryption and the other features that come along with the chipset (e.g. 22mbpsPBCC+4x). D-Link just markets it as if it's their own "AirPlus" proprietary technology. In fact, the actual hardware inside for some of these companies is made by the same Asian OEM (Global Sun Technology).

I have a dumb question.

I do not have broad band connection.

Can I use it with my dial up connection?

If I can not use it with dial up is there any other use of it?

Thanks for your time

Sure...you can use this for any network, whether it is Internet-connected or not. If you think you need wireless access to your network for whatever reason, go for it. Otherwise, if you're having a hard time thinking of uses...this probably isn't for you.

How would you configure the routrer for this? I couldn't figure it out from the instructions.

We have a DI-614+ setup on the network as a normal host. It doesn't act as a router, gateway, or firewall...it just provides wireless access to the network.

You could configure your DI-614+ to point to your modem-connected machine as the gateway (run some sort of connection sharing software on the gateway, so it will route). And configure all of your internal network hosts to...ah forget it. Bottom line is this is probably too hard for you to implement if you're not sure. There are a lot of tutorials out there...you can do it, you will just have to do some research.

Like the above poster said, you'd need a gateway computer with the modem. I recommend Fresco, a free linux distro that fits on a floppy. I use it at my parents' house, they are out in the country, so no broadband, so Fresco maintains the always on dialup, connects thru cat5e to the wireless router, then broadcasts to my dad's wireless laptop. You're limited by the dialup speed obviously, but it works pretty slick.

Note: you need to turn off DHCP on the router, Fresco will do that.

This is an awsome router. And the single antena version is BETTER than the dual antena version. The newer one actualy has an internal antena (so it still has 2) as well as a faster proccessor.

I was just checking this router out on techdepot.com... they have one rebate listed there for $25. It seems like it's a regular d-link rebate that isn't limited to purchases at techdepot. Can anyone verify this? If so, you could use this rebate in place of the $20 one listed on OD's site. That would make this deal even hotter! =)

P.S. I just purchased the toshiba e350 pda on techdepot for 150 (this is also hot - it's listed at 250 normally!). I'm gonna cancel that order and add the d-link for $55. Then i can apply the $20 off 200 coupon and basically get this router for $10! So if any of you need to buy $150 worth of stuff at techdepot, you can do the same!

Found out how to hook up the router with dialup.

The process should be as follow:

First Step: Plug a computer to the Wireless Router, change the IP address of the wireless router so that it's in the same subnet as the main Router (the one that is connected to the Internet Modem); give it an IP that doesn?t conflict with the main router's base IP address, or the DHCP server range. This will ensure that you can reach the admin server of the old router from any LAN machine, and that the Wireless Clients IPs are assigned correctly.

Example:

- Main Router?s base address is 192.168.1.1, with a DHCP server range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150

- Set the Cable/DSL Router to (the one you're using as an Access Point) base address to any IP address between 192.168.1.151 to 192.168.1.250

Second Step: Switch Off the DHCP on the Wireless Cable/DSL Router, and set to Off any filters or special settings that is On if it is used as the main Router.

copied the info from here

For those of you having a problem with connections going dead, this is a known issue between D-Link routers with 22MB access turned on and non D-Link wireless cards connecting to it. Turn off 22MB access to fix it. Simple

Click above for the PCI card rebate. It is on the same form as the router and wireless PCMCIA card.

For what it's worth, I just got mine and it now says

Now Even Faster New Built-In 4x Feature (Works with D Link DI-615+, DWL-900AP+ DWL-650+ DWL-520+ with 4X Upgrade) See also support.dlink.com

Now I just have to wait until my DWL-650+ comes from NewEgg.

After trying several codes I did give up on getting the $15 off $75, so it cost me $30 not $15.

My recent AnandTech Hot Deals purchases:
80GB Maxtor from Office Depot (still sitting in the box)
3 pillows from Sharper Image
D-Link DI-614+ and DWL-650+

I finally got my rebates from Radio Shack ($50 on $100 progressive DVD and $20 on $10 2-way FRS radios). I contributed the FRS radios to a silent auction for a favorite charity and the people who won it had a ball with it. So that was a real successful hot deal.

But I think I have to start aiming for a simpler life and stop buying so much to save all this money.

overall d-link isnt the best brand out there. but for the price i am happy with what i have now that there's no wires running everywhere.
for buyers who are looking into buying wireless lan cards for their PC/LAPTOPS, dont buy d-link there are so many problems with configuration. we had to wait 1 hr to talk to a d-link 'level 2' technician and all he told us was what the 'level 1' technician said already... i hate them.

okay that is all.

$79.86 D-Link Wireless router
-$30 $30 Office Depot rebate valid 9/6/03
-$20 $20 D-Link Rebate valid till 9/6/03
-$15 Office Depot coupon for $15 of $75 order

$14.86 total

I don't believe this forum allows posting of coupon codes. Coupons can be found by searching the web for Office Depot coupons.

Office Depot also has the wireless D-link PC and Laptop adapters for $29.87 after rebate in the Office Depot B&M Stores. They are $48.83 AR if you purchase through OD online. Maybe OD's online price will come down so you can order and use an online coupon. Don't know if OD online usually comes down in line with their B&M store prices?

So glad I got the Wireless router from Microcenter posted earlier.... $20 after rebate, and Belkin name with their infamous lifetime warrantee.

Did anyone check out the $25 rebate I mentioned earlier? Here's the link. I believe you can still use this rebate along with the office depot rebate and coupon. If so, that makes this deal even hotter!
