DOES OFFICE DEPOT PRICEMATCH WITH ONLINE STORES? I called and they said they don't pricematch with online stores, just local B&M stores in the area. But their Low Price Guarantee doesn't mention anything about not honoring online sites prices. If someone can get them to pricematch an online store, you can get this for $4.98 after rebate.

$79.86 D-Link Wireless router
-$30 $30 Office Depot rebate valid 9/6/03
-$20 $20 D-Link Rebate valid till 9/6/03
-$15 Office Depot coupon for $15 of $75 order

$14.86 total

I don't believe this forum allows posting of coupon codes. Coupons can be found by searching the web for Office Depot coupons.

Office Depot also has the wireless D-link PC and Laptop adapters for $29.87 after rebate in the Office Depot B&M Stores. They are $48.83 AR if you purchase through OD online. Maybe OD's online price will come down so you can order and use an online coupon. Don't know if OD online usually comes down in line with their B&M store prices?

sorry not to threadcrap but this is not a very good router
i bought it the first time they had this deal and... #1, dont be fooled it only has 1 antenna in the back!! and #2, i often lose my internet connection, dont know if its my wireless lan card, or this router...

overall d-link isnt the best brand out there. but for the price i am happy with what i have now that there's no wires running everywhere.
for buyers who are looking into buying wireless lan cards for their PC/LAPTOPS, dont buy d-link there are so many problems with configuration. we had to wait 1 hr to talk to a d-link 'level 2' technician and all he told us was what the 'level 1' technician said already... i hate them.

okay that is all.

So if I have a laptop with a wireless card, can I connect this router to my existing wired router at home and then use the wireless router for my latop? Sorry for the confusing question, I just hope someone knows what I mean and can help.

You can. You would have to connect the wireless router as an access point...i.e. disabling all routing functions on it. Leave wireless enabled, and then connect to that with the wireless laptop card.

You will probably need a wired connection to configure it.

Mine's working great...have had this router for a while now, and the wired connection it hasn't dropped on me yet. Haven't used it's wireless features at all, so i have no idea how reliable that is.

Incidentally, having one antenna or two doesn't make a difference on a wireless router...it's the signal strength on the antenna that governs it's clarity and strength at different ranges. This is usually given as the "gain" on the antenna, measured in decibels.

So I couldn't have a desktop hooked up to the wired router and the laptop hooked up to the wireless router simultaneously? I would have to swtich it over every time???

i think u can do this:

modem -> wired router -> wireless router

or

modem -> wireless router -> wired router

u just need to switch dhcp off on the router downstream.

but why do that? just use:

modem -> wireless router

and that should take care of everything.

"I don't have a wireless card in the desktop!"

the wireless router has a 10/100 built in switch. You can plug in 4 wired computers and like 256 wireless computers simultaneously

That's excellent. I probably look really dumb though. Just to make sure, the router is D-Link, and the laptop wireless card is I don't know the brand, and this should be fine. Last question then I am buying this thing!

Also, with respect to the two rebates, don't you need two UPC's? I am not positive, but I think they both require that.

I'm using the DI-614+ with a wired network. I have a laptop w/wireless Lan card that connects to the DI-614+, then thru the wired network to the router/firewall. There's no trick...it works really easy....D-link has instructions on doing this on their website FAQs....just remember to disable the DI-614's DHCP functions where you configure it....and access the DI-614 via a wired PC to do the initial configuration.

Feel free to PM me when/if you have any probs or questions.....

....and the DI-614 is very, very solid. The model with one antenna is the newer/upgraded version (old version had 2 antennas). The signal strength on this puppy is great....don't let other posts point you the wrong way.....its 2 antennas that tend to be more problematic than 1 antenna.

The firewall functions on this router look pretty good (it does SPI).....so I might end up using this as my primary internet access point and run the wired hubs off this.

Good Luck....you can't beat this router (especially at this price).

wumpus....

I got this router for free a few weeks ago and i disagree with most of what you say.
My router has two antennas on it..
I have it up on the third floor of my house, and my room is down in the basement. I also have a D-Link Wireless lan card and i get 80+ signal strength most of the time when im in the basement and always above 95% when im upstairs either on the first or second floor. Also configuration took me about 10 minutes for plugging everything in, installing the wireless lan. It did everyhting automatically... i recommend it the router and this is a great price for it...

this is confirmed everywhere. office depot has never and will not any time soon began to PM online stores. even their PM policy restricts to local stores within driving distance (how far driving distance is depends on the manager).

I was able to make this deal work. I have had this router before and it worked great, sold it second hand to one of my clients. Still working great there.

Thanks!

A few things:

1. This router is excellent. I got this about half a year ago... and I haven't had any problems with it. There is a HUGE amount of configurations available for this router. The most i've ever seen for any router. It has a 256 bit encryption option for WEP. Most routers, even the cisco ones i've seen, only have 128 bit. Furthermore, D-link is a good brand... I've used their networking products for many years now and I hardly have any problems with them. This deal is HOT.

2. As stated in another reply, the newer version does only have 1 antenna. This doesn't mean that the range or wireless quality is worse off. Actually, I heard reports that wireless routers with 2 antennas actually run into problems somtimes because it transmits the same signal twice, which means your wireless card may recieve the same packet twice and hence cause confusion. So they probably took out one antenna and made its strength and range better.

3. The first wireless card I had was a Hawking (never heard of that brand before). I got it from fry's cuz it was cheap at the time. But when I used it with this router, I kept getting my connection dropped. Then, the d-link pcmcia cards got cheap and i decided to get one. My connection is way better... i don't get dropped now, and the wireless signal reception itself has been boosted. I used to get 'VERY POOR' for the Win XP signal strength meter on the Hawking card... now i get EXCELLENT on the Dlink card.... and this is with the router and my laptop in the same exact location. So the actual wireless card you use with this router does make a BIG difference.

4. Furthermore, if you use a d-link card (specifically the DWL-650+) with this d-link router (DI-614+), you will get a 22Mbps connection, which is double of the standard 11Mbps. Furthermore, there is some 4x TxRate setting you can enable when you have both as dlink. I'm not sure what TxRate is, but 4x of it sounds good! So there's a lot of good stuff when you use the same brand card and router together.

So for those of you who are just starting up your wireless network and looking for cards to buy, I would suggest shelling out a bit extra and get wireless equipment of the same brand (many other popular brands have this feature too, where you get 2x the bandwidth if you use that same brand for everything). I actually got my d-link pcmcia card at OD for like 15 bucks a couple months back... I don't know if they have rebates on it now.

I got this router a couple weeks ago for $29 and it's great. Upgraded to the latest firmware and it's been great. Connects to my xbox in another room without a problem, and the firewall and security features are great.

Ordered one yesterday...this is perfect for my apartment.

Oh yes, and FYI, OD B&M will NOT pricematch online stores aside from OfficeDepot.com. If you want to pricematch an online price you have to buy it online THEN submit a pricematch request.

Actually, two antenna's are used in a method called "diversity". This basically means that the radio monitors the signal quality on each antenna and uses whichever antenna is better.

This technique (depending on the implimentation of the WLAN chipset) will improve the receiver sensivity by 1-2dB as well as helping to reduce an issue called "multi-path".

See above. Although I'm certain that there are WLAN boxed with 1 antenna which performe better than some WLAN boxes with 2 antenna, there is a good technical explanation why two antenna are used and generally using two antenna in a diversity arrangement will improve performance overall.

The quality of the antenna is another important aspect, and sometimes what these guys will do is put 1 good (i.e. expensive) antenna on rather than 2 cheap antenna. The costs are the same but the gain on the 1 good antenna is enough to offset the diversity gain plus the lower gain on the two cheaper antennas.

Or something like that

Well, I picked up my D-Link router and D-Link PC network card in-store yesterday and it was a breeze to install. Had it up and going within a half hour. There were no settings to enter or change, seeing router and card were D-Link brand items. I just hooked them up, installed the D-Link software, and I was surfin. Works great.

Some mentioned that this router is no good. I read some reviews online and many including PCMag gave it 4 out of 5 stars and that was before the upgrade. PCMag review
