I bought and returned one of these a few months ago. The thing could not capture well in my opinion. I have a Snazzi video capture card made by this same company it is a PCI card. I have had it for years and I am very pleased with it, I thought that the newer device would be even better so I picked one up, big mistake. my recomendation find a Snazzi on eb*y. Even though Dazzle no longer seems to be developing new drivers for the Snazzi I think some engineer at Microsoft must have one of these because everytime they release a new version of Windows it seems to have an updated driver. And if you don't like it you can dump it back on eb*y and get rid of it.

I made the post shorter. Just trying to be helpful so ppl don't have to go out looking for specs.

Anyway, I like this cause it can record up to an hour of video on to a cd-r and be played back on my home theatre dvd. My home VHS movies won't last forever, this way they will.

But video capture can be done with a lot less money, so what is so cool about this particular card?

Great post ChooBaKa! This is a knockout deal! This sells at egay for over $200! And I couldn't find it anywhere for under $170 shipped!
So for $110 after the $40 staples coupon and Derek rebate is a great price.

If it is DVC DM4100, egay sell price is $150 (I only checked several bids), while DVC II DM7100 sells over $200.

I was looking for a video capture device so that I can edit hi8 camcorder videos on my computer, and was wondering what kind of input people had about this particular one. Last week I was just looking around at compUSA and didn't really know where to start doing research, so if people know if this is a great deal or if there are better ones out there, polease post! thanks so much

mscubsfan:

If you are just looking to do editing, then pretty much any video capture card will do. Then you get ULead Video Studio to do editing, or something similar. This does a lot more. It can record MPEG-1 (TV quality) on to CD-R to play in your DVD player etc. They claim up to an hour of video per disc. They have 100x compression, that is how they can fit that much video. No one else can do that. For what i want to do, it is the best at this price.

i just went to the Staples site to order this and it said "out of stock"...i'll just keep checking with staples to see if they get it back in so i can use the $40 off coupon. hmmm, maybe i'll call them and try to order by phone. sometimes, it seems, they can magically find one to ship!...vroom

Possible problem.
I received my order from Staples today. It's actually "Dazzle Video Creator - Special Edition". The part # is DM-4300 which does not match the PN on the rebate form (DM-4100)

i just checked on this again and it didn't show up "not in stock" this time, but now i'm afraid to order this if the rebate form doesn't correspond to the manufac# (according to Richard98). Anyone have additional information with the conflicting #s and getting the rebate?...vroom

Well, somebody owes you the $50, cause staples should specify that in the description but it doesn't. Better call them up and see what they have to say. Either Dazzle or Staples. Let us know what happens if you do.

I just got mine today and verified that it is the "special edition" with p/n DM 4300. My UPC says 40853 80878. I want to check this UPC with the non-special edition one. If they are the same, I don't see a problem in submitting it. But I will try to get a hold of dazzle to see what they say.

update while posting:
I just talked to Dazzle and they said they created this "special edition" for office stores like staples and staples pretty much said, we we don't our customers to have to send in the rebate, so we will sell it with the $50 off already, hence $199 instead of $249. I think I may call Staples to complain that they don't specify a Manufac. part # or that it is a "special edition" and see what they do about it.

Can any video-capture guru out there tell me what decently-priced cards I can use to capture and burn good quality VCDs? By 'good quality' I mean the VCD playback looks extremely similar to the VHS tapes it was captured from. Thanks.

Thats exactly what this does. MPEG1 compression. TV quality. 100x compression. Up to an hour on one cdr.

Buy a $40 wintv capture card and use freeware tools to capture and compress to mpeg. You'll get better quality for less money

If there's interest I'll post more info or some pointers.

I have the DVC II pci card thing is sweet and fast just hook up my camcorder to it and it does on the fly encoding to mpeg2 creates svcd's and vcd's no problem. If your looking for something with a little better encoding capabilities I wouldn't go for the lower card, unless you just can't pass up the deal . Right now just wish someone would come out with hardware mpeg4/divx encoding card now that would be cool.

the II version is a pci version and the regular one here is USB. The reason I didn't get the II version is because I won't be doing DVD recording for a while, plus my home DVD doesn't read DVD-R (RAM whatever). But the II is sweet with MPEG2 compression.

rtg:
Can you post more info? I'm specifically looking for cards with decent frame rates. I have enough diskspace, so I don't need MPG-encoding on the fly. I can capture it uncompressed and then use TMPGenc or something to convert it into MPEG. I'm thinking that'd give better results. Any pointers from rtg and others are much appreciated.
