pretty disappointed with office depot atm, ordered online for instore pickup yesterday. received a call from the local store later that night saying it was out of stock and i had to call the national number to cancel the order or else i would be charged.

first of all, why would they sell an in store pickup if it was possible to be out of stock? this will be the last time i order online for in store pickup @ office depot

Picked up the last two 1200VA at Coleman ave in San Jose. Supposedly there were two more 1200's at the Los Gatos store. They had 900VA's for 69.99 at Coleman ave, Stevens Creek Blvd store, and inventory showed 18 of these 900's in Sunnyvale.

They are SUPPOSED to walk to the floor and grab the unit when it is a pickup.
They should also offer you a substitution since they goofed.

I've been pricing UPS units for since mid-summer and this is the first hot deal. Finally picked up the two AVR type units I've been looking for. Was able to pick up two 1200VA units at a local OD today. Thanks to the OP or I wouldn't have known to ask for them.

The store had a bunch of 900VA for 69.99 by the door but no 1200VA or 1500VA units.

But, if it is only when on battery, that should be good. What is the noise when on AC power?

There is no noise when on AC. Only time there is noise is during battery test/on battery. And these are as quite as they come for quality battery backup. The crap ones don't last because they skim on these things.

Why the heck are you dumping on these anyway? APC is THE battery backup company. Go to any business server room, 90% of all rack-mount and/or floor battery backup units are APC. The only time that you don't see APC units are when the server room has a room level battery backup (usually generator driven that recharges the battery units).

And you won't find a better deal on true 1500VA battery backup. I have used a few of the other units made for home users, and they really streach their specs.

I ordered one Saturday for an in store pickup(1500). I had to try several stores before it worked. I checked on Sunday and it was listed as backordered. I checked again later and it said out of stock please reorder. Of course the reorder would not go through.

Thanks for the heads up. I managed to get two of these on Sunday. (1200's) There were at least two more left on shelf in Palm Beach Gardens store, but today they are gone according to store staff. I am kicking myself for not buying 4 instead of just 2. BTW they did mangle to store pickup order placed online 2 days prior. Ended up having to just buy them in store and cancel the online order. But I am happy with the 2 I got.

I got a reply from APC. here it is.

_____________________________________________________
Thank you for contacting APC's email support on 12/02/2006 01:55 PM. I would be happy to assist you.

As per your inquiry, this is not the noise level during normal operation, however it can reach 45 dba when the unit goes to battery, that too depends upon the load attached.
This noise is due to the internal fan, that keeps the temperature of the unit under control and in turn enhances the life of the UPS. The fan keeps running to control the temperature of the unit and when the load attached to the unit is more, then the fan runs fast to exhaust the internal heat and thus causes the noise.

Thanks OP, stopped by closest OD today, and surprisingly they still had one 1200VA left on clearance. Most likely no one took it because the box was beat up and it didn't have big yellow clearance price tag so no one bothered to check price on it. Anyway good timing, because my UPS died about 6 months ago and I needed to replace it.

Concerning fan. Yes, fan does come on when UPS is running off the battery, and it is pretty loud, but I'm not bothered because the fan stops as soon as electricity is restored. There is a low frequency hum coming from the UPS, but it's fairly quiet and to be fair all UPSes have it.
