Okay, I am the resident S3 viddy card freak. The Savage4 is a great chip and while the company that made the boards is not in that business anymore, VIA's S3 Graphics still makes integrated chipsets with the S4 core and so I would expect continued support but the last drivers for the discreet S4 were made available 3 months ago. Then again, the updates had been frequent up until then and I know of no issues with my standard BX board and any games -and I've tried a lot of different games.
Plus, the Savage prolly has superior graphics and video quality to any 3D card save the Radeon. However, $56 is not a Hot Deal for a chip that is admittedly getting long in the tooth. If this was the PCI or DVI version sure, but not an OEM AGP. I would prefer it over a TNT2, any ATI previous to Radeon and of course anything 3dfx for features and quality and sometimes speed but as said you will be limited to 800x600 with most contemporay 3D games though some are fine at 1024x768. But then so would you be with anything else at this price, unless you can still get a Savage2000 for less.
Also, the Savage chips are still best at UT engine games with MeTaL for quality and speed, though the OpenGL hack has allowed Geforce chips to wiggle up to the bar. The main problem is that if 3D speed is at all important to you then anything in this class is just managing to hold its own with current releases now. If you can only afford $56 and can find a Savage2000 at least it would hold its own for longer but if you can scrape together together $84 for a Radeon LE that does seem the best ticket at the moment.
You would really have to say what you want to do with a new card because a Savage4 for $40 or so might be ideal for many games and movie watching etc.
