FYI: This unit works just fine with the U.Are.U Pro software I received with a Pro unit at 3x this unit's cost about 6 months ago.

Plan to get quite a few of these...heh

Hey again.

I know there were some concerns about others registering their fingers, but I just noticed that you can not re-register any fingers OR register any new fingers without first authenticating with one of the fingers on file. That kind of keeps others from registering in your profile should you not switch users or something.

MISMan - this only applies if you have a Windows password, in which case you have to register with fingerprint or Windows password to register another finger. If you don't have a Windows password, it lets anyone register a finger, with no authentication of any sort needed. Seems like a huge oversite/bug - even without a Windows password, there's no reason not to ask for fingerprint confirmation.

If you don't have a windows password, you aren't too worried about security I'd guess since anyone could boot your computer and delve right into your goods. The device is designed for security, it follows that using a windows password would be a minimum requirement. Kinda like buying 102 octane fuel for your escort...it'll work, but what's the point?

Exactly what I was thinking. If you are so worried about people using your computer when you go to take a crap, then you'll lock your workstation. If that's too much trouble then you deserve your files being tampered with. At work if someone leaves there workstation without locking it, a kind person will just log you off. A few assholes will send mass emailing out on others accounts stating that they are idiots for leaving their computers unattended. the worst you could do to someone in my office is log onto a porn site. That'll get their internet access revocked as well as possibly some disiplinary problems. That's why I always lock my terminal or just log off.

If you're just having problem with people accessing your (personal) computer then you need to go ahead and use passwords (bios & login/startup). Then you wont' have any problems. i don't have any problems at home as I have my own computers and my wife has her own computer and she keeps the hell off of mine (unless hers is down for some reason, which I'll fix ASAP).

Yeah but it looks like a "normal" mouse... I'll never going back to a ball one now that I've used optical mice

<< Just spotted this post here on Anand but here is the same type of security device built into a mouse.

A better mouse?

I went ahead and ordered 3 of these, they are working well. One note on the whole locking the system thread, they add a tray icon which lets you access the finger registration. However, it's default action (if you double click it) is to lock the machine. Found that pretty handy as I normally let the screen saver lock the system, but now I can force it to lock as I leave.

bsobel: You are right, but I noticed that it actually switches users versus going to the screen saver. That is even better. I also can log in a LOT faster with the U.R.U device versus putting in my password, and not just in the difference of typing. It is about 10 seconds quicker. Not sure why, but I am pleased.

The hardware scanner will work with the U.Are.U PRO software, which does support Windows 2000.
Of course, you'll have to locate a copy of that software somewhere (and not violate copyright law doing so!).

Out of the box as shipped tho, this scanner will NOT work with W2K.

I just got my credit card bill for this item and there were two charges for some reason.

December 14, 2001
DIGITAL PERSONA INC.REDWOOD CITY CA
0000-1226 BLOMETRIC IDENTIFICATIO 4.40
Reference: xxxxx

December 13, 2001
DIGITAL PERSONA INC.REDWOOD CITY CA
0000-1226 BLOMETRIC IDENTIFICATIO 59.53
Reference: xxxxx

The second charge is correct but what is the $4.40 for?

I bought one and got it two days after Christmas. For the most part it works great. No longer do I have to remember or type in all those Usernames and Passwords. Its great for logging onto Windows XP. Right now I have myself and a Guest setup. Just put your finger on the sensor, and you're in.

On one website (my bank) the "Replace Password" thing doesn't work. When you drag the word(s) over to the login boxes, they won't go in. I tried it with Netscape and you could get the words to go into the login boxes. However when I went to the website (using Netscape rather than Explorer), and put my finger on the U.are.U, the password would get pushed into the Username box along with the Username. So I still have to do it manually for that website.

Also on another website the auto "Return" function didn't work. It would cause an incorrect login. When I didn't use it, the info would be dumped into the boxes, but I would manually have to click the login button.

So there must be a few websites that it isn't going to work with.

For the most part, its great. I highly recommend it.

The IP addresses do match up here, this looks like fraud to me..

Do an nslookup ( from your DOS prompt ) on the IP address to the first link he gives. It looks to me like a dial-up account. I wouldn't trust it.

I didn't get ripped off.

I bought one for $55 from the website.

Received it, my credit card was billed properly, no problems.

I was PM'ed by many people who got them fine and dandy. No issues there from what I have heard. I personally got three of them, and they work fine, and I got billed right and delivered quickly.

In fact, I even mentioned the weird linking, but I was taken care of.

Regards.

I talked to Digital Persona tech support on Friday about the XP version of the software and found out a few things:

1) U.are.U Personal does not allow fingerprint scanner to log on to computers on networks with domain passwords
2) U.are.U Personal also does not unlock screensavers

To get that functionality you need the Professional version of the software mentioned earlier in the thread (which will have an XP upgrade in the next week or two). The Professional software is also compatible for W2K, and if you want the scanner to work with W2K its cheaper to buy this kit for $55 and then buy the Professional software itself for $49 (the alternative is shell out $150 for the Professional kit).

If anyone has the Professional software, please PM me, I really want to get this thing to work in W2K. Thanks!

If someone has an FTP site, I will GLADLY put the drivers out for you. Looks like the licensing is not exclusive! It allows for distribution according to the EULA.

MISMan, have you considered uploading to DriverGuide.com?
