Johnny Walker will forever be burned into my mind when a woman used it in the worst pickup line on me. I finally understood what it must be like for women to deal with lame dudes throwing desperation at them at the bar lol

and that pickup line was????

So clue me in? How can a blended whiskey of which the oldest component is aged 75 years, cost freaking $20K? This is a joke hot deal, right?

Well, there's only 200 bottles ever made. And supposedly they were all gifted to 'important' people. How one got into Costco's hands is a good question.

It's 1805 and that's John Walker's birth year, not a date having to do with the whiskey other than that it's an anniversary bottling.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label 1805 Celebration Blend

Price: £25,000

Johnnie Walker Blue Label 1805 Celebration Blend This is an idea in a different class to everything mentioned above. Just look at the price. Quite simply it is one of the rarest whiskies in the world. It is a special bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label made to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founder, John Walker’s birth. It was created by blending some of the rarest and oldest whiskies and only 200 bottles were made. Not only that, none of them were released for sale to the general public. Instead they were given (yes, given) to individuals considered to have made a significant contribution to modern life. The list of lucky recipients was kept secret, so it is extremely rare for one to go on sale. It is a very precious Scotch, bottled cask strength at ABV 46.3%. The bottle was specially designed with hand-written details etched on the glass. There is also a gold bust of John Walker and, separately a recreation of Alexander Walker II’s handwritten book of blending recipes and a replica antique nib pen. Alexander Walker II was John Walker’s grandson. Finally, it is all presented in a Victorian-style writing case.

end quote.

I'd love to taste it. Probably smooth as silk.

I am no Johnny Walker fan, though. It's the Bose of Scotch. Red Label is kerosene, Black Label is the same price as Glenlivet and there is no comparison. JW is usually what people who don't drink Scotch serve to impress people - especially Blue Label.

Johnnie Walker Green label (now apparently discontinued in favor of ) has long been the benchmark for value quality blended scotch, with Yamazaki 12-year 'white' being a close second.

Anybody ever read the annual Jim Murray Whisky Bibles?

JW is shit. Go for an 18-21yo Glenfiddich. That's worth the price and equal to ANY JW.

Blended Scotch is shit.

Different blends. I thought the same thing at first until I tried Reserve. It's smokier and clearly a different blend of malts at a different ratio. Considering the smokiness I'd guess the Islay malt is heavily aged, perhaps helping justify the price.

And that's the problem. Walker Green was the best blended malt for the price. They obviously weren't making enough money on it, either because of demand, poor marketing (it was a new scotch, debut in 2004 I think?) or poor margins. Sourcing a steady supply of malt whiskey can be tricky.

Blended Scotch is shit.

I agree, but blended MALT scotch is amazing. Whiskey aficionado's agree. The only reason it isn't more prevalent is because of manufacturing complexity and perhaps its acquired taste. Think of Red Zin. It's a lovely wine, but few people actually like it at first and just stick with Pinot Noir.

Not sure you can compare the likes of this whiksy with the usual JW, never tried it but I prefer single malt anyway. Here is a bargain, a few days left at the auction..

Sorry, no auctions allowed.

I love Scotch, but I wouldn't pay $25,000 for a bottle of 100 year Lagavulin that gives you a blowjob when you're done.

Id go along with that.

Scotch, like movies or food in general is mood dependent. Therefore different scotches for different moods. JWB is smooth, but as such, I also found it to be less tastful. If you dont like tasting a scotch liquor because it has a flavor then dont drink scotch. There's lots of other much more benign things with ethyl alcohol in them.

Caveat: One scotch that is nasty is JW Red. Got to be hard up for that.
