Troll,

If your customer ID has used a particular number the system is suppose to tell them so you can't use it again. The codes are not unique at this point. They come in snail mail via postcards, letter inserts and in email. They also from time to time will be published in the newspaper.

You have the option of doing the deal on the website and later trying to price match. That is dangerous with this deal since so many people are having a problem with PM'ing Sam's. You always run the risk that they will include the coupon in the PM. I personally have never done a PM via the web because I always use coupons. I just don't trust it.

The purpose of the coupons is to increase their business and it does just that. The real problems come when people use and stack codes that were not meant to be used that way such as dividend codes for $200 off and that does hit the web from time to time.

I love Staples - headaches and all and any deal I do I try to see if I can match it at Staples first and I usually always deal with a CSR or go to the store.

1 WDC 30.7 hard drive delivered today from Staples for 47.73.
Credit card charged appropriately - so far.
That combined with ShopTalks Pizza Hut "$20 worth of gift certificates for $10" that they overnighted because a certain someone called and asked WHERE WERE HER COUPONS made for a pretty good day.

Does anyone know the specs of the Sam's rebate? I was gonna buy several of them and sell them, but I dont want to get stuck with them and not be able to redeem the rebate.

Thanks in advance.

Rebate limit from Sam's is $40.00, so only one rebate can be used. Look back at the beginning of this thread for more details I posted about the rebate.

Well I finally got my order through at Staples. Took me 3 calls, but I got it. Wasn't as good as Bandito's deal, but a little better than SAM's club. Basically I called Staples up, told them to price match Sam's Club's $99.99 price for the 20.5 7200 HD. Then I used a $25 off $75 coupon. So I paid like $81 up front. I'll get a $30 rebate, so $51 bucks out the door for a 20.5 7200 WD HDD. Sam's club would have costed 67 after taxes and rebate. NOT to mention you have to have a SAM's Club membership (which I don't have).

These are the problems I ran into.

Call #1 - Tried to price match Sam's AFTER rebate, NO GO.... So took it at $99.99.... When I tried to use the 25 off 75 coupon.... The guy ask'd me where I got it. Didn't know what to say (didn't know the coupon restrictions either) so I said, a friend gave it to me. He told me coupons are non-transferable. I said, that's nice, cancel my order then......
(if this happens, just say you got it in an email from THEM, or via snail mail in a postcard)

Call #2 - Tried to price match Sam's AFTER rebate again.... Guy wouldn't even match the price saying that the one at SAM'S is the EXACT HDD and I even gave him the manufacturers part number. The damn idiot said the person at Sam's Club said it wasn't an EXPERT drive, just a normal one (obviously the guy at Sam's was another idiot). I ask'd him to call again and check the part numbers, they are the same. He told me he doesn't know the part number at Staples only the IM number. Forget it, I said.
(if this happens, i'm sure you can tell him to check part numbers, they HAVE to have it somewhere)

Call #3 - PM to $99.99 (didn't even try after rebate as I dont' think it's possible, unless you got some really retarded CSR with NO knowledge - or u nag them to death or something).... Got the PM, tried to use coupon, guy told me he already knock'd off 130 off staple's usual price, and i can't use a coupon anymore. I said who told u that? Where does it say that on your website. He said, my supervisor just told me. I ask'd to speak with his supervisor then. He put me on hold for a few sec, pick'd up and ask'd for my coupon number. Supervisor pick'd up and said sorry for the confusion and took my coupon. So... total came out to $81... Minus the $30 rebate and that's $51 bucks.....
(if this happens, don't be fooled by their "my supervisor just told me" crap.. ask to speak with teh supervisor)

Hope this helps....... You guys are prolly all much better at negotiating then I am. I suck... NOT aggressive at all... hehe.

okay... for those of you who are trying to PM with Staples..... Staples only carries the OEM version of the 20gb hdd, and the manufacturers rebate only applies to drives bought in the retail package..... so i guess this deal isn't that hot with PM?

wrong.... well at least the 3 CSRs i've called all told me it's the RETAIL package... for some reason it was taken off the staples website....

The one that is on it now is the OEM one for like 140 or something like that. the one I bought had an original price tag of around $230... but i dont' see it listed anymore..... guess I got lucky..... well if you wanna try it, the IM number is IM1009779....

I am glad Troll posted the experience. Now everyone can see why one person can get one deal and another can't. I did get the price match with the MIR but it went through a supervisor and who is to say just how much of the 'circumstances' had to do with it. I don't know if I will be able to do another deal like that without the same circumstances..and even if they are the same the next supervisor I get may not do it. We will see. I do know the store policy is to PM with the MIR but they will try to talk you out of it, of course.

Also, remember that staples website does not show everything that they have for you to order.

I found out that they did carry the 20.5 in a retail box but it took getting a good CSR who knew how to search.

The thing I really have the most problem with (other than a different story every time you call) is getting them to find a product for me in stock on a hot deal. The trick is finding out the IM number on an item. Supposedly if the system says they are out of stock it is suppose to check IngramMicro but I don't believe it. I tried to do an order and it wouldn't go through. I called back with an IM number and they had plenty.

Staples sucks but I love 'em anyway for my deals

I just tried the deal at Sam's Club in Omaha. They had it listed at 119.00 with a $40 Sam's Club rebate. They had 2 left but I didn't want to buy a #35 membership just to get this drive. I called Staples and was told that they would price match Sam's Club, I told them $99.00 and they had no prblem with that price but then I was told that they were out of stock. We'll after talking to the CSR for a bit she looked around and found a bunch of them. Staples is trying to hide them I bet. Well she matched the price and with tax (not sure why I got taxed) the total came to $106.49. I asked if she would match the price after rebate and she said that there is no way. I figured I would not press my luck. I put the order on hold until I got home to find a coupon (another $25 off) and then the rebate (another $30) off came to a total of $51.49. That's a hot deal.

Hi Nightwatch

I tried to PM Staples with Sams club on this deal couple of times and I was told that they dont do PM with membership based business. Can you write the CSR name and your order number details so that I can refer that?

TIA

gopalkk: I just happen to have that info. CSR's name is Debbie at Ex. 5462. I just got off the phone with Micheal at Ex. 5482 and he too will pricematch Sam's but get on it. He told me that it may not last.

MontyBurns: I got a 30.7 gig for $81.49. Worth the effort.

I'm in the process of trying to get them to match a price on a Yamaha External SCSI CD-RW with CompUSA. Staples list it at $440.99 and CompUSA had it at $199.99. A box of paper clips and a $40 off coupon and that's another deal to good to pass up.

No luck. Mike said the same that they don't pricematch with Sams club.

I am giving up.

hey monty, i think you need to redo your math.......

it's not 8-9 bucks..... more like 15 bucks.......

IF you buy it am Sam's...... $99.99 plus tax..... around $107 rite? - $40...... $67 TOTAL

If you buy at Staples, $99.99 - $25 (coupon) + TAX = $81.49..... - $30 Rebate = $51.49 TOTAL

that's 15 bucks difference.....

One very loooong call (CSR was calling SAM's to confirm $99 price) to Staples yielded the following results yesterday:

WD Retail 20.5 GB (IM1009779) for $99.98
Less: $25 off $75 coupon -25.00
Plus: Tax 5.06
Shipping: FREE! 0.00
Total $80.04

Less: WD rebate of $30 -30.00

Final Total $50.04 (!)

Not bad at all, and worth the trouble. THANK YOU to all who posted their advice and negotiating tips in the thread. I truly appreciate it!

Why the $99.95 20.5GB vs the $119.95 30.7GB or the $149.95 45GB?

I know the 20.5 is a 7200 RPM and the others are 5400 RPM, the 30.7 has the same plater density as the 20.5 and will be ~15% slower, but the 45GB is a 15 GB platter (vs 10.2 GB on the others). The 45GB has a higher density storage track that give higher transfer rates per rotation that make up for the slower rotational speed.

Most stats for the 45GB, except for seek tim, are within 1% of those for the 20.5 GB (with some 45GB stats better - see storage review info).

Argh. Just called Staples. Out of stock on the 20.5 gig WD.

And since I demand performance (7200rpm), I don't see myself taking any of the other drives.

Oh well.

Thanks for the tips everyone.
