Thanks OP.

I have just now begun looking for a guitar. Been out of the loop for a LONG time. So if you happen to run across a good deal on an electric guitar during your browsing, please LMK. It could be new or used.

Also, if there are any other musicians around here, please throw some web links my way in regards to best musical online shops with fair prices and good reps.

Thanks

I bought a bass from www.rondomusic.com. For the price, its well built and sounds good. Definitely something good for practice or doing things where you expect scratches and dents and want to prevent a more expensive guitar from taking that abuse

and love it.

I've bought two guitars from American Musical Supply. Good prices and great service. I normally go to local guitar shops to try out one in person and then I'll order the same guitar from AMS for a lot cheaper. Quick shipping as well and they let you finance on a 3-payment plan for most of their stuff. They don't take credit into consideration. You basically pick out what you want, make 1/3 of the payment and then they charge your bank account once a month for the next 2-4 months. Very convenient if you need a guitar right away but don't have the funds up front.

Also consider local pawn shops for an electric. Lot of musicians pawn off really great entry-mid level electric guitars when they need cash or are looking to upgrade. You'd be surprised what you may come across. I've seen some high dollar electrics in pawn shops for 50% off retail.

Good luck...it's a great hobby.

Watch out - not all Ovations are the same. These are probably made in Korea and are to original Ovations what Epiphone is to Gibson (i.e. cheaper models). I bought a Korean Ovation from Guitar Center last year for about $250. It's a good guitar but... it's worth $250 and not much more. Googled.

Thank you OP!!!
Just received one from AMS (American Musical Supply) yesterday for my daughters X-mas present. I called AMS and they are pricematching it (saved $150 on the guitar and $15 on the case)!!! Sure glad they have a great policy (pm before or after the sale).
Happy Holidays!!

Thanks everyone.

I'm browsing AMS now. Huge selections. Also checking out musicians friend from the link provided by the OP. Prices seem comparable so far.

Yea, I thought about going the pawnshop route. Might just do that. I don't need anything too fancy or expensive, just something that sounds decent. Maybe something in the $250 range. I don't have any big plans for being in a band or anything. Playing the guitar has always been a great way for me to escape from the stresses of everyday. I escape into my own little world when I'm playing, and I miss that.

I already have a Laney GC120C amplifier and a Digitech RP-12 Guitar MFX PreAmp Processor, so I just need the guitar. I use to own a Ibanez, but am open to any suggestions, I'm definitely not stuck on any particular model.

But of course if there is a KILLER deal or a big sound quality difference between a $250 model compared to a $350 model, I can go higher. My wife wants me to pick out a guitar for Xmas and I will feel guilty if I go too high.

I've been playing on a Ovation Applause which is a lower quality guitar. They're pretty nice. This is a good guitar for the price but I'd advise before buying one online run down to guitar center and play the same one. Ovations are very different guitars. The thin body and multi-hole design creates a sound not like your typical martin, taylor, or takamine (yes I know they all sound very different). I enjoy mine but picking a guitar should involve alot more than price.

Totally agree, and very good point. Just looking for suggestions from those more knowledgeable than I am on guitars that may fit my needs to help narrow it down. Will make trip to pawn shop within the next few days and also the local guitar shop to try a few out.

Thanks

Search of a better price on this and you'll find the cheapest it can be had anywhere else is $537.

I checked them out at Guitar Center before I posted. They're well worth the buy, and they're really beautiful!

I am just starting to learn guitar... would this be a "waste" since at this point I don't know jack and most likely can't tell the difference? I like electric but have been told to start on acoustic, so I've been searching for an acoustic with plug output. Any recommendations?

I'd say the only "waste" would be to let other people talk you out of getting an electric if that's what you really want. The two can be very different instruments and both are worth knowing, but I've never felt one was more important than the other.

I agree SRGilbert.

My first guitar was a Yamaha accoustic and is what I started taking lessons with. When I made the jump to electric guitar about a year later, my fingers were flying! It seemed so smooth. IMHO, it's easier to make the transition from accoustic to electric than vice versa. But it's really no big deal either way. A little practice takes care of all that.

If you want an electric, go for it! I love both electric and accoustic equally. Only reason I'm going with electric is I already have the amp and effects and tired of them collecting dust.
