Are contacts bad for your eyes vs. glasses? (or is it the other way around?) I've always wanted to get contacts.. but probly need another exam for that. What kind of contacts are the best? ones that last 1 month, 6 months, a year?? (i don't really know anything about them.. )

<< << ... Also, don't forget that Acuvue 1-day Disposables are the same contacts as Acuvue 2-week disposables, thats 15 pairs (or 30 contacts) for only a few dollars more, when you'd normally get only 3 pairs (or 6 contacts)! Check this deal link for more info : Link >> >>

i think it has to do with your perscription. 1 day acuvues only come in one base curve and maybe 2 different diameters. so i think you may need to check with ur doctor to see if they're ok.

<< Do I need to go get a prescription to buy contacts? I have contacts and glasses, I know what I need just don't feel like going to pay for an eye exam....... >>

buy from 1800contacts.com

legally, they are supposed to check your prescription, so you give them the name and # of your doctor, and here's what they do:
they fax your doctor at like 1 in the morning, and (I dont know the legal technicalities) but if they don't hear back from your doctor in like 8 hours, then its ok for them to assume that your doctor agrees with the prescription you are claiming to have, and they will send you the contacts. The thing is, how many places are going to check your prescription, and fax them back by 9am.

The reason I know this: the last time I went to see my eye doctor, it came up that I wasn't going to be buying my contacts from him, and he asked where I was buying them from. I said 1800contacts, and then he told me all that info, trying to convince me not to buy from them, because what they do is kind of shady. I said ok, and that I would buy from walmart. (doctor was trying to get me to pay a buttload to buy from him, but screw that )

You could visit your optometrist and ask them for a copy of your prescription. They'll probably suggest that you take a eye exam on an annual basis tho'.

Has anybody ever used the Night and Day ones?
I take it this means that you can sleep in them with out too many bad things happening to your eyes?

Awesome Thread!

My insurance covers almost 100% of the cost of my contacts in a year... I am qualified to buy contacts from my doctor and they cover it. Is it likely that my insurance will cover 1800Contacts??

Eye prescriptions are only good for one year, at least in my state. A real doctor won't even let you have a copy of it after that.

As for extended wear contacts, I used to wear my lenses for days at a time. After a few years, I became sensitive to them and now I wear the same type of lenses but take them out every night (usually, hehe) -- apparently this is a common scenario.

Does anyone know where they show the base curves available for ciba focus lenses?

edit>> oh yeah, wearing glasses is always less risky for your eyes than contacts (unless of course, the glasses break and shards get into your eyes - i imagine most glasses are really plastic nowadays anyway). You basically have these pieces of plastic touching your cornea, which isn't really natural. The higher the water content of the lens the better (it lets your eye breathe better). If the fit isn't correct, there will be friction everytime you blink. It can be painful if this happens. Some doctors don't know how to properly fit you with contact lenses, even though they be certified to do so. That being said, I much prefer contacts because of the improved peripheral vision, the improved possibilities of getting laid, etc.

Contacts can be bad if used improperly. What my doctor told me is that if your eyes don't get a sufficient amount of oxygen, the red blood vessels will start spreading while they are seeking oxygen and can actually go across your retina causing you to have permanent "lines" in your vision. Therefore, you should not be wearing contacts for at least 2 hours every week. I have been wearing contacts for four years now and have not had a single problem except for a few times where I tore them. I like them a lot better than glasses, glasses make me look real dorky.

I take my contacts out every night and always have. It irritates my eyes and kinda jacks up the contacts if I leave them in overnight or while I am sleeping for long periods of time. I use the 1 month Focus contacts, and I just had an eye exam and my prescription has not changed. This makes it the third year that they have not changed after I switched to Focus.

About the base curves, on VisionDirect I see 8.6 and 8.9 as the two available options. Dunno if this is what you are talking about. My lenses are 8.6.

THat thing about your eyes "breathing" how long are the contacts supposed to be out a week? My doctor told me 1 day every week, and I really dont want to screw up my vision, so what did your doctor tell you?

Same deal in Oklahoma- contact lens script good for one year only before eye-exam required, supposedly state law. I ordered my last batch from www.weblens.net- about $14 a box, shipped, prompt. No extra charge (like some) if they have to contact your doctor for script.

I buy a years supply of the 1-2 week extended wears and wear each pair for a month with weekly cleaning/ overnight out. I've been doing this for over 10 years and have never had a problem. I'm lucky, I guess. My doctor mentioned the new one-month contacts allow the eyes to 'breathe' more, but he said my eyes were getting enough oxygen with the 1-2wk ones, as evidenced by my lack of red viens. My eyes actually feel abnormal when I take the contacts out.

His 'story' on the lawsuit- the daily's are made with a more automated machine (hence the lower price) and quaility control may not be as strigent as with 1-2 wk ones. Truth or not- who knows.

Be sure and go to AcuvueRebates.com for your coupons, if applicable.

Great thread bump for those like me who missed it the first time around.

I buy at a store that allows me to certify I have (at least at some point) had a prescription for what im ordering...(I have, and if you are trying to order contacts cosmetically without knowing what you are doing AND seeing a dr it could cost you an infection or much worse).1stopcontacts I had great service and fast delivery from them.

My eye doctor matches Wal-Mart prices on contacts. I told him how much cheaper they are there and asked and he said OK- so you may want to try that. Also- I do keep my contacts out for about 2 hours every Sat. morning to let my eyes "air" out. I was developing "ocular migraines"? sorta like tunnel vision because I was never awake with my contacts out (sleeping w/o them doesn't count).
So where is a a link to the proof that the 1 days contacts are the same as the 2 week ones?? That would be great if it's true!

2Crucial, why dont you use one of the other vendors listed here or that price engine site to find your lens brand. You arent supposed to switch brands without the doc looking at your new lens and how it fits you...
drewdogg, thats great advice...ive been wearing lenses since Jr High, always take care of them and havent once had an eye infection.Dont skimp on those chemicals or try to reuse them!

I just went to my eye doc last week, and he told me that Acuvue has up to $100 in rebates available thru 22 May! It's part of a lawsuit settlement. There are "terms and conditions" i.e. you have to buy at least 4 boxes, but it's a great deal. You can get details at acuvuerebates
