Here's the best deal I've found on Domain hosting:

ServerCentral.net

For $15 they offer you registration PLUS
1) 10 email redirects (*@yourdomain.com goes
wherever you want)
2) 15 subdomains or redirects

They will also sell you simple registration
(no services whatsoever) for $11.

If you want to go the hosting route, you can
get hosting for as little as ** $6 ** a month.
$6/month gets you a name, 30Mb of space, 500Mb
of transfers, 10 IPOP/IMAP/FTP/WEB users,
anonymosu FTP, a dedicated IP address, unlimited
email aliases, PHP3, MySQL, CGI, realserver G2,
etc. You can pay more for more space and users
if you need it.

I registered a few names with them last week.
I found them to be extremely friendly and
suprisingly responsive (VERY quick responses
to emails).

Kwad Guy, how fast are their servers? Seems like a pretty good deal if your sites come up quickly.

I set mine up through http://www.addr.com. Activited within 5 minutes and with the silver plan, it is a very good deal compared to what I had found out there ($9.00/mo for 50 MB space).

What's anonymous ftp as opposed to regular ftp access? Do I need it? I don't really need a lot of storage or transfer (just want to put a family page together) and was wondering whether I should go with the cheapest plan or if there's any reason to spend more.

Yhea, I am in the same boat. I have 8 email ussers in my home and want our own domain name... not to really use the web space that much. I would like to have my own email addresses like moey@myname.com Is servercentral going to give me what I want? I am confused... cause 6 bucks a month is great. My dsl service provider wants $5 for each extra email address a month!
thanks

I've hosted several domains at www.netmegs.com, not the cheapest deal out there but the owner takes a very personal interest in everything. It's friendly, fast, and the virtual accounts are completely kick ass. It hosts quake2.com.

All I can say is stay AWAY from www.burlee.com. They are complete idiots there. Our site was 4 hours from going live when they suddenly decided to shut us down. Seems as though the jackasses do not understand ASP or how to control it.

They shut us down without so much as an explanation, call, email, or carrier pigeon. Plus our site crashed at least once a week. We moved over to a new guy and everything as run smoothly ever since.

Basically they are idiots.

I got an email indicating they have setup my domain... and will take three days for it to be activated. I am a little confused cause I did not indicate to purchase it until a sales rep called and contacted me FIRST! Oh well... I guess I will be ussing them now. I hope they are reliable.

I ordered a domain last night and just got the same message. I can log in to the DNS editing screen but it says it will take up to 3 days to activate. It says you get 15 subdomains and 15 URL forwards...what exactly does that mean? does that mean when someone goes to www.mydomain.com they can only get forwarded 15 times or i can I setup 15 subdomains to get forwarded to 15 different urls for unlimited times?

Yhea, I don't get that either.. but I am new to this domain thing so I guess I have a lot to learn. Anyone know a good place on the net to learn about this sort of stuff?

"you get 15 subdomains and 15 URL forwards...what exactly does that mean?"

It means you get 15 thing1.yourdomain.com, thing2.yourdomain.com, etc

And you can have 15 of your subdomains (or the www.yourdomain.com) forwarded to another page hosted somewhere, like geocities. (person would type in thing2.yourdomain.com and it would automatically go to the page you set, like a geocities page)

Personally I liked domainmonger.com for registration, they responded to emails rather quickly. I used www.bn3.com for email and dns services, but if you want a page hosted, they only offer 5 meg for a website. Unlimited email addresses there tho, but they have a textline at the bottom ala hotmail. I believe unlimited redirects and they dont put any ads on your webpages.

Unclemo and Dralion, which plan did you guys go with? I think I'm gonna give them a try...just whether I should go with the starter or family plan. Guess I'll go with the $7 plan for now and upgrade later on if I need to. Or did you go with the unlimited plan? I didn't even see those! Guess there is a $6 plan..sorry about that. Do you know whether they have T1 or T3 lines?

thanks ace4 for the info. BroadwayBlue, i didn't get any plan...just the DNS hosting for 15 dollars a year. I figured i can redirect the email and url forward to all my pages...the unlimited plans are located on the products and services page, then click on the unlimited button.

I got the $7 plan... I doubt I need anymore than that. It seems really reasonable to me. However, I still trying to figure out this whole thing. Am I missing something cause from what I see I am going to pay $15 a year for my domain name and then $7 a month. Is this all I need or is there something I am missing? Oh, and I would like to know if it is T1 or T3 too. I am going to email them now and ask.

They just email me back. Very fast. I am impressed considering this is a weekend and holiday at that.
THis is what they said.
We actually have 3 OC3's (155mbps each, each 3x the speed of a T3) along
with a DS3 (~T3 speed, 45mbps) and a wireless link out.
We have direct lines to Verio, BBNplanet, and UUnet.
Each server has a dedicated 100mbit line out.

Seems fine to me. Any comments? I don't really know what this all exaclty means...
