I doubt that's completely true

Their site is crap. If they have 200,000 to spend per month on redundand oc3 links then they have the cash to pay someone to do a decent job on the site.

They may have servers that are collocated in a datacenter with those links but then it's all shared with alot of other people.
So you would get about 2 mbits of badwith at peak hours, if that much.
And if they're going through relay clouds, there is going to be alot of congestion which means slow loads, especially on streaming stuff.

i have a hosting company and do it on dual +frac t1's and nobody ever complains about speed.
The best way to find out about a service is to try it out.
But the quality of the site makes it a little shady to me.

Unclemo, I too sent them an email and they responded very quickly.

Here's what they told me:

Michael,

Our servers are located in our network operations center in Bloomington, IL.
It is staffed 24 hours a day, and has a full complement of backup power, air
conditioning, raised floors, and more.

It is connected to the internet via 3 OC-3's, (155mbps each, t3's are
45Mbps) 1 DS3 (45mbps) and 1 wireless link. We have direct connections
to RMI.net, Verio, BBNplanet, and UUnet.

We have been hosting for just under a year now, and strive to provide
quality hosting for low prices.

If you allready have a domain name, you can transfer it to us for free if
you host with us, and we will pay your renewals (15/yr if you do not host
with us) as long as you host with us.

If you have any more questions please let me know.

Thanks,

Jordan Lowe
Server Central Sales

I'm gonna give them a try...it's only $7 a month with no setup fees, so if they suck I'll go somewhere else!

broadwayblue, that is how I feel... 7 bucks a month is cheap enough to blow and switch if necessary.

linuxboy, there site is garbage and certainly "shady". No ? about that, but it is cheap enough to try. $7 is basically free so no sweat.

Unclemo, I just signed up over the phone. They sound legit to me. I'm told that they will have a new website up soon. I really don't care about that as long as my site is available and they have good customer service...the latter already seems to be true.

My feelings exactly
it is a great deal.

I suspected that that was their business strategy.
They just co-locate 3-15 servers (I don't know how many customers they have) in a datacenter for a few grand per month and just manage the servers themselves. Pretty nice as it reduces overhead and allows them to offer hosting for less. At $7 per month and 500 megs transfer they can throw in about 600 domains on a good server. Which means $4200 per server if they can get enough customers. I'd go for it myself if I didn't own a hosting company

That's a pretty good deal, but I found another that I just signed up with. http://www.horizonws.com. They have $14.95 domain registration, which is ok, but their hosting fees are fantastic! $5.00 a month gets you 10 e-mails, 100 megs of space and 1 gig of site traffic per month. And the folks there are very easy to work with, and respond right away to any questions. Seems to be fairly quick servers, too.

Happy 4th to everyone,

Bob

Right now Horizon Web Services seems like a better deal. I find their site a little hard to navigate though and when I try sign up, I get a server error.

Thanx for the post! For those who are using servercentral right now, how does the subdomain/redirects work? They say on their web page that you get 15 "Subdomains or Redirects" with the domain service. Or?
For the redirects, is there an option to keep the domain name in the url even when the redirected site is loaded? DirectNIC does redirects with the original domain name in the URL at all times. I like that.

namezero.com is free... but everything has ads on them... somebody figured out a way to get rid of them, but I guess I'm willing to fork over $5/month to not see ads I think I'm going to go for Horizonws.com

I'm a complete moron when it comes to all of this...I want to set up a domain...Is it better to go ahead and finish your page before you set up your account. Not sure what I'm supposed to look for in a server, other than the obvious. Fast and Dependable....Is there specifics I should look for? What else...I'm not sure how all the monthly and setup fees work out....I pay for the domain name in most cases and then a monthly fee on top of that? Is that right? Seriously confused....If anybody could explain the whole domain thing I would appreciate it.

Unclemo - You mentioned setting up all your users...What does that mean? With e-mail accounts?

Oh one more quick question...Are you allowed to have your own sponsers on the site? I would like to open up a gaming site for cheats and walkthroughs and would like to get some sponsers...Is this allowed?

Hey everyone -- I'd like to set up a site of my own, but I don't really understand the steps I need to go through (domain registration, DNS hosting, etc.) Can somebody post or email me a quick list of steps, or point me to a web page or book that explains all this? I just don't know where to start, and I can't seem to find any info on it. Thanks!

step 1: register domain with your choice of registering service (ie networksolutions.com, domainmonger.com, any of the other ones listed earlier)

step 2: after it is set up (can take up to 3 days, depending on weekend/holiday), you have to find either a computer with a dedicated line, or else get a DNS hosting company to set it up. Then you enter your DNS information (it tells where the domain is linked to). Each domain registrar does it differently, so your mileage may vary. There are some free DNS services, but most likely whereever you want to host your site should do the DNS services, which means you would set up an account with them, and they'll tell you what to put in the DNS fields. (should be ns1.blah.com, ns2.blah.com, etc)

step 3: once the dust clears, and you internic updates your DNS, your domain is ready, now the next part totally depends on what you are using to host your site. you can check your status at www.networksolutions.com, click on "whois" and search for your domain, when the DNS matches what it is supposed to be, then it works.

Like I said, it works differently for all of them. domainmonger.com and bn3.com were pretty good at explaining it on their sites, and I didn't have any problems, other than it took 3 days for internic to update the DNS entry. Whatever site you choose should have a FAQ explaining the process and how they do it.

RUN! RUN! RUN! AWAY from NameZero as fast as you can. It is a great concept, it is getting widly popular, but they have made the same mistake that has been made a thousand times in the digital economy. They have a great idea that got an unbelievable response, and they don't know how to handle it. Who wouldn't want to be able to register domain names for free? So what if there is a banner, I just wanted to park a few names and use their email services. Unlimited forwarding, etc., etc..

Well, if you try to use their email forwarding, forget it. If you send me a message using my domain forwarded email account, I will receive it anywhere from 12 hours to 3 days later. That is if I receive it at all. People are livid and screaming on their bulletin boards, but they are totally silent. They have a service announcements thread that only gets updated when the problem has been resolved, sometimes a week later. No progress, status, or anything. They continually blame their equipment, the overwhelming response, and their users for using too much resource.

Finally, my 60 days are up and I'm switching domain hosts, I don't know where yet (maybe onestop), but I'm getting out. At least it only costs $15 to switch.

If you are still interested, make sure you go to their bulletin boards before signing up. Check out the angry masses before making any decisions. It's not a bad deal if you just want to park a name and not use it for a while, but that is it.
