Damned backorders, oh well, that gives me time to update the stinking firmware. I can't seem to get it to do anything. I've tried both the direct connection method and the picture card method and neither way works. The direct connection method keeps telling me the CF card is not installed in the camera but it is and it's empty. The CF card reader method won't let me transfer the upgrade file onto the card, keeps saying the card is write protected but there is no way of un-write protecting it. Anybody have any hints?

I flashed my firmware - no problems at all. I did the CF card reader method...my USB reader shows up as my G: drive so copying the firmware to it was drag-n-drop simplicity. You have to put it in the "system" folder (create the folder first). When I turned the camera on, it asked me if I wanted to update the firmware, and even offered to delete the firmware from the CF card afterward so I could turn it back on without cycling through it again. I haven't had the need to take pics since, but the website said the new firmware should help with focusing indoors.

The same thing happened to me. I called customer service I was told that the double charge for shipping happened to a lot of people. She said that she would have accounting credit my account for the overcharge. I would call them and make sure they do it for you also.

Haven't gotten mine, so I don't know about the doublecharge for the shipping, but I do remember seeing a blurb that they *would* tack on sales tax, as they have business presence in all 50 states (and NY is definitely one of them as Eastman Kodak practically owns their founding city -- and kudos to you if you know what the city is!).

Yeah, I tried that but no luck. Unfortunately, my CF reader is built into my Epson photo printer. It does show up as a separate drive (G) but won't let me add or delete anything, just read. And I'm still not having any luck with the camera update method, the update program recognizes that the camera is present and turned on but it still thinks that there is no media card inserted when it actually is. I'll have to check into it some more, there has to be a way to get this damned thing updated.

Spoke with a Kodak CSR who acknowledged the problem but said it was only a printing error ????? Charge to my CC is supposed to be the $4.95 when ordered so would suggest all who got in on this deal scrutinize their CC bills carefully when they arrive.

Interesting...decided to check my charges on my order - I used some extra funds in my Paypal account (as a Mastercard) to purchase the kit and a replacement lenscap. I show two charges on the order date, for $1.00 each, and a charge of $5.96 on the following day...I assume for the lenscap, but that was $4.95 on the site. Mayhaps they charge 20% tax to IL, though. It'll be interesting to see what other charges evolve...

Well, I just checked and UPS should be delivering the package as I type this. I'll post some info when I get home later.

On another note, MightyMan wrote "and NY is definitely one of them as Eastman Kodak practically owns their founding city -- and kudos to you if you know what the city is".

My guess is Syracuse, NY which is probably a wholly owned subsidiary of GE nowadays .

Rechargeable lithium-ion battery works with the following digital cameras:

Kodak DC4800
Fuji MX-1700Z
Fuji MX-2700Z
Fuji MX-2900Z
Fuji FinePix 4800
Fuji FinePix 4900
Fuji FinePix 6800
Fuji FinePix 6900
Toshiba PDR-M4
Toshiba PDR-M5

I also got charged sales tax on my order!!!!!!!

Yup, got charged sales tax also, but didn't get the double shipping charge. However, for tax, should I have been charged NY sales tax or CT sales tax (where I live)?

Overall, I'm impressed with the total package. The stand alone charger completely charged the two new batteries in about an hour, significantly faster than the in-camera charger. My only gripe would have to be with the camera cover. It fits very well and has a nice suede feel to it but there is no way to either remove the media card, battery, or open the port door without taking the entire case off. I think having an opening flap over the port and media doors would make picture transfer much easier. Just my 2c. Enjoy.

OK, I finally got my firmware updated (I know, everyone here was losing sleep wondering if I'd be able to conquer my camera woes, ha, ha). For some reason, my regular CF card (128MB Mr. Flash) was not recognized by the update program, so I remembered that the camera came with a 16MB card, and bada-boom bada-bing, less than 2 minutes later it was done.

On another note, I had failed to notice prior to my previous post, that there is a small pouch for a spare battery inside the camera case, nice touch.

Well, since I doubt it's NYC, I'll guess Albany. I'm not too familiar with NY towns in general, it's just that the upgrade was shipped from Syracuse so that was my guess. I actually used to travel to the Syracuse/Finger Lakes region quite regularly for my previous job. Not much out there but soybeans and corn (and F%@$ng state cops who like to hide in the bushes).

Chief Wahoo,

Thanks for the post.

Mine is scheduled to arrive today and hopefully the package will be an improvement as a good case and better recharging were big issues with me. Certainly this deal is a bargain and I thank you for alerting us to it.

But, as for the camera itself, I do have to say it has been a disappointment in that it's performance is irradic. I have taken pictures of Indian pyrographics on the walls of Glen Canyon, AZ that have stunning clarity and detail for a digital and on the same trip, pictures I know I took just never got recorded while others were so out of focus I'm embaressed to say I took them.

This thread has gotten me interested in trying again to overcome these problems or e-bay the darn thing in a fuller "for sale" package.

hychka,

I agree with you regarding the erratic performance. Some pics are spectacular while others make you shake your head and wonder is it the same camera. Because of this, I purchased a Nikon CP995 a couple of months ago when the prices came down dramatically. My thinking was the same as yours, sell the Kodak to lower my cost. Well, I still have both cameras.

Believe it or not, both cameras have their strong points and both have their quirks. The Nikon will out do the Kodak, hands down, in just about every category...if you know how to get it out of the camera. The Nikon does not have a particularly user friendly interface but then again, it has an incredible number of manual controls. What the Kodak excels at is its ability to produce really nice pictures (most of the time, that is) as a true p&s with minimal effort.
