Picked up a Sound Blaster Audigy MP3+ in Kansas City (KC) for $50 - it was the last one - a guy thought he had gotten the last one in the clearance section. I went over to electronics and they had one more left!

Also got a USB 2.0 TDK 40x12x48 external CDRW for $78! Had paid $90 for the first one I got - then three weeks later, they took them all off the shelf when they had 2 or 3 of them left at $90 each. I go back a week later and there's one lone one for $78! Wonder what's going to happen when I return the first one that I bought for $90 - are they going to put it back on the shelf for $78 - or make it even less?

Picked up a Norelco REflexAction 5861XL for $50 - the timing is unbelievable since my 8 year old Norelco's batteries burned out the same morning and I was looking to solder in some batteries this weekend!

Happy hunting and as usual, Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV)!

Not even a discontinued-but-still-supported Aureal Vortex SQ2500 OEM card? Runs about $20, and plays everything I've thrown at it excellently. Also supported for 3D sound in many games, with A3D 2.0 support, and SPDIF output for running DTS DVDs to an external DTS audio decoder. Still, future support is probably up in the air, much like Voodoo3 cards.

I don't think a Vortex is a smart buy these days. They're great cards, but unfortunately they have virtually no driver support. I bought a TB Montego II (a Vortex 2 card), and there's no way to find drivers for any OS later than Win98 for them. If you're always using Win98, then the Vortex is GREAT - you can find them for $15. If you're going with XP, though, you're screwed.

Right now I'm using a SB Live!5.1 on XP. It's a great value for $30 OEM, but it's not the best IMHO. I'm looking for a new Hercules card (maybe the Fortissimo?) or an Audigy card. The 5.1 has too many issues with crackling, some high-pitched ringing, and sometimes lackluster quality. But I can't complain for $30.

I would have been really suprised to see that XP didn't pickup a card popular card that's like 3 or four years old.

Then you haven't been following creative stuff. The native drivers that shipped with XP for SB Live! did NOT support such MINOR (sarcasm) things as 4 speaker sound (you were restricted to stereo), and a bunch of other stuff. They took months after XP release to support XP with drivers that actually used features more extensive than a crappy $5 stereo sound card.

I've been looking at the terratec DMX 6 Fire 24/96 card recently. Unlike creative which lies (Yes lies, quote from website about audigy extigy: Stunning 24-bit multi-channel performance ) on the box about 24bit/96 support, this one actually has it and uses that new VIA sound chip.

Nobody said that Microsoft did a good job supporting devices, just that they do. It's not like I'm going to use the XP drivers for my GeForce3 or somethin.

$99 indeed is not a hot deal.. it would be for a plat version
not for MP3 or X-gamer . ...

MS wasn't in charge of drivers for SB Live, creative was. Creative took too long to release the drivers, and since they delayed until months after the launch of win XP, its kinda hard for MS to include proper drivers if creative doesn't supply them. I'm knocking creative here, not MS. MS is a whole nother story, dont get me started on them

I've debated installing my old A3D (Monster Sound). I'm still using onboard sound and have been trying to decide what to get.
Newer games don't support A3D anymore, do they?

I've thought about the Audigy but the reviews say the 3D sound placement isn't as good as A3D was. But I guess that's the only support left in games now?

If you want a great sound card at a fantastic price, check out the philips seismic edge (a 6.1 sound card, supporting a3d and eax 2.0). A deal for it can be found in this Thread for $20 shipped. I just ordered 2 to replace my vortex 2 due to winXP compatibility issues.

But only A3D 1? There are several cards out there (though maybe not at that price) that do EAX 1 & 2 and A3D 1 but not 2, and some convert A3D to Directsound.

What kind of problems have you had cmpterman2?
