The best deal I can find on this drive is $198.99 from ZZF:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...05818&prodlist=froogle
...that's a pretty great deal.

At Best Buy, they are having a sale on the H2200U 200GB External Hard Drive for $142.99. This is supposed to be 5400rpm and house the 200GB 5K200 hdd inside, but some of them actually come with the 7K200 instead! The serial number (on a sticker on the outside plastic packaging) of the 7K200 models starts with either DTG or DEG.
Here's the link to the drive:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...oduct&id=1177112455216
Go to your local Best Buy and buy one of the DTG or DEG models and you get this awesome drive plus a pretty cool looking USB External enclosure for $142.99 + shipping! I'm not sure if there are any BB coupons floating around, but when I bought mine the last time this was on sale (a few weeks ago), there was a 10% coupon and it was a tax free holiday, so I got it for something like $126.

YMMV since your local BB might not have this in stock. Mine had about 10 of these drives, and the DTG models were actually way in the back.

The only downside is that I think this comes with a 1 year warranty instead of the 3 year warranty of the retail model.

*edit* This is a SATA drive.

GENIUS! I am so going to my local BB stores at lunch break.I am in a desperate need for a HDD upgrade from my 100GB 7200RPM Hitachi on my T60. Especially since I am coding on two OSes (Fedora and Windows) on my lappy and space is becoming scarce

I'll post back after I checkout the dealz!

This has been posted on other forums for a while now. You need to get DEG or DTG serial numbers in order to be 7200rpm. Warranty is void if case opened, per Hitachi. Most of the 7200rpm models are probably gone by this point, but hey you might get lucky.

hehe...I got lucky. I picked up the last DTG from the shelf. The others had a WCG number and the serial number sticker were on the back of the box, while the DTG's sticker was on the bottom. SCORE!!! $150 for 200GB/7200 RPM and an external enclosure. Muchio Gracias.

And I did LOL

At lunch break, I headed to a BB that was 15 minutes away, I headed to the HDD section, I found the Hitachi drives, there was a queue of 200GB USB and a queue of 160GB USB.

I looked at 4 out of 5 200GB ones and they weren't DTG/DEG, last one I looked at was DTG! YES

However I would have loved to get another one because I will need another one at some point, so I was like if I can find a 160GB 7200 RPM one I would take it too. So I looked through the 160GB and having no clue if the DTG / DEG naming scheme would apply to the 160GB models, but after looking at 3 I found a DTG 160GB, and I was like hmmmm, I flipped it up and it's NOT a 160GB!! It's a 200GB that someone stashed in the 160GB queue, BINGO!

So I walked out of BB with 2 200GB Sata drives for $306, that's $100 saving over retail

I haven't cracked open a case yet, since I barely had time to make it back to work (neffing from work ATM shhhh). But I will at least crack open the one that I will install in my lappy tonight

Thanks a bunch OP!

Good to hear that people are taking advantage of this great deal. I haven't seen this posted on FW, so I thought there would be a good chance that most of your local BB's would still have some in stock. I've only seen it posted on a few notebook forums, and not a lot of people seemed to be jumping on the deal.

My macbook has been very happy since getting the upgrade. It can now have 140GB for the OS X partition and 60Gb for Vista.

Was there any seal that proves that a case was opened? I am sure after reading iseestars's post that Hitachi voids the warranty on the HDD that it's not good news I guess.

It's SATA, I got in on this when it was originally posted on other forums. BB are just idiots, although with all the clearance deals they've been having I've pretty much got everything I need for the next year without black friday. lol

Yes. There was a thin piece of tape that covers the two screws you need to loosen to get to the hdd inside, and it has one of those tamper proof paint things. But I can see someone really messing up that tape, even with normal use. If something goes wrong with this drive, I'm going to put it back in the enclosure and send it to them.

....but I've never had any notebook HDD's fail on me (and I've owned MANY of them). *knock on wood*

Also, is this really SATA? BB rang it up as a PATA but I doubt PATA laptop hard drives go up to 200 GB.

Yep...it's definitely SATA.

I will be tonight. I picked up two @ the Dale Mabry / Tampa location.

One is going in the PS3, the other into the Dell XPS.

Drive is in the PS3. Working flawlessly so far. Although the transfer was a royal pain.

1) Ps3 would not recognize 2 different external usb drives; it did recog the hitachi though
2) The screws on the hitaci and PS3 are very soft and very tight; not fun.
3) Need for Speed Carbon game save/data would not copy - thanks EA.

Just a heads up to those who will be swapping their laptop drives. This will likely decrease your on battery time, as the 7200 will use more power than a slower drive.

This myth has been busted before, I don't remember which review site that was, but the battery life difference was 1 minute from 5400RPM!

This used to be the case but these days the battery life difference is very minimal. The biggest drop I've seen is in the 5 minute range.
