Any tips on where to find the 12% coupon? The 10% one mentioned above expired 10/31 (although I'd suspect the local USPS might have the movers guide with a current coupon).

I was a skeptic at this initially, but I am going to jump on board (guess I already did as I ordered online for in store pickup) since my new in August Seagate 160gb 5400 rpm drive is filling up faster than I anticipated, this will tide me over until the 1TB notebook drives lol.

ps. I am assuming the serial number is clearly on the UPC sticker/box so I can view this before purchasing if it is not DTG or DEG?

Yes from what I've seen the S/N on the box with the DTG or DEG have the serial # sticker on the bottom of the box. S/N's without the DEG/DTG have the sticker on the back of the box. So that is a easy giveaway.

damn, I just picked it up and it's WGH.... Not even a box ut a plastic shell. I should head back and take a look on the shelves...

Word to the wise, the woman at customer service shot down the 10 percent coupon since it's not valid for online orders picked up in store. I just had her ring it up as a store purhase to get it to work, but if I didn't say anything I wuld have spent an extra 13 bucks.

Went back to the store to check the shelves and everything has the new WHG serial. There were about 8 of them.

I decided to go out of my way an hour to the other BB and no luck there. The frustrating thing is to describe the situation the the idiot BB employees. I wanted to find out if maybe there was some old stock in the back or even a return and the idiot was like where there are 7 on the shelf. Once I told him the DEG/DTG labelled ones have a 7200 rpm SATA drive he looked at me like I was an alien as he said there are no 2.5 drives like that so I must be thinking of the 3.5" drives... CLueless...

With this new sale since 11/18, has anyone found any of the 7200 drives or has Hitachi taken them out of the supply chain? I am assuming the WHG ones are 5400 drives. I don't want to open the packaging if they won't allow it to be returned. Too bad there wasn't a way to determine if the new serial is 5400 or 7200.

Checked the Torrance, CA Best Buy. They had a lot of them, unfortunately, no DEG's or DTG's.

I did manage to get a pricematch on the DEG I bought more than two weeks ago.

The DTGs and the DEGs are old stock. I doubt there are any left. I got onto this when I first read it a month ago. My Macbook flies

Picked one up at the east side Madison, WI store yesterday.

All I have to say is: Wow, these screws are tough to unscrew! I got the case open, but I haven't gotten the logic board off the drive. This is driving me nuts!

Two stores in my area were completely sold out a couple of weeks ago. They got some more drives in stock prior to the current sale, and some of them are DTG drives. This proves to me that there are still a few more DTG drives out there and they are randomly stocked.

There is an easy way to spot the DTG drives. In the top lefthand corner, the box says "USB Powered". As others have said, the serial number is on the bottom side of the box. The WHG drives have the serial number on the back side of the box, and they do not say "USB Powered". These differences make it easy to tell them apart.

The manager at one of the stores told me that they are not allowed to give out serial number information over the phone. However, you can ask them if the box says "USB Powered" in the upper lefthand corner. If they understand what you are asking and are not too difficult about it, you might be able to determine whether a trip to the store would be worth your time.

I wonder if it's too much to ask if I could find someone to buy one of these I could buy it from since my Best Buys only have the WHG's.

Maybe this is a dumb question but are the DEG/DTG's an item Hitachi actually sells? I was under the impression they sell the drive that comes in the DEG/DTG separately, but there is no actual way of buying the external casing with that drive at all at any price.

Wondering if in a month or so the 7200 SATA drive will be offered in an external case? Then who knows how long it would drop to the $129.99 price...

The best answer I can think of is that Hitachi IS selling 7200rpm SATA drives in an external case, because some of us just bought them. There is no indication on the package whether the drive inside the case is a 5400rpm drive or a 7200rpm drive, or whether it is IDE or SATA. It is simply called 200GB "Portable USB Storage". It is true that the "H2200U" is advertised as a 5400rpm drive, but I guess that's a marketing issue, not a manufacturing issue. The serial number on the package is the same serial number on the drive itself, which effectively identifies which kind of drive you're getting.

I guess that begs the question, though?

So I guess it was Hitachi's plan to offer a "potluck" drive even though they don't advertise these as 2 different drives, which is odd as one is a 5400 PATA while the other is 7200 SATA. Weird.

On a positive note I started the day calling every Best Buy within a 100 mile radius. Ft Myers, St Pete, Brandon, Clearwater, Tampa etc. The Brandon place the guy I called picked up one that had "USB powered" written on it, and he confirmed it was "DTG" serial. He held it for me so I drove up there. Purchased it at the CS counter. Walked over to the rack and there were 5 more DTG models. I bought a second one.

I guess the hardest part was explaining to a salesperson the difference between the two, which to them they can't understand as they don't acknowledge there is even a 7200 model.
