From KID01's post earlier:

Ok Let me give you some first hand info. I currently have both 8260 and 8290 phones. There are a couple noticeble differences.

1. 8290 as you all know is ONLY 1900MHZ GSM PHONE. No analog no nothing.
8260 has 1900/800/analog (triple band).

2.8290 has voice dialing (press a button, then say the name who you want to call and the phone dials it for you)
8260 doesnt have it

3. 8290 have a built in infrared 14.4k modem (and i have voicestream and for 29.95 I have 1500 DATA minuts - just point the phone to my laptop - and it regonized a nokia 8290 modem
8260 doesn have a built in modem

4. 8290 has animated menues
8260 doesnt have them

Those are the major differences. Then you have the additional features of the GSM standart - SMS messages, and so on.

probedude, it's called BBC right to the left of the asian garden mall which is on bolsa near magnolia. goto www.yellowpages.com, enter BBC as business name and westminster, california as the city and it should give you an address

Thanks,
I'll look them up.

Having checked the reviews though, I'm reconsidering. I commute a lot between Ventura and Santa Barbara and there are a lot of dead zones there. Don't know if a phone with an internal antenna would work very well in that area.

Probably go for the 6190 or 5190 from them instead.

Actually, I just bought new pacbell service just yesterday from a place in Westminster,

Nokia 8290 with all the good stuff, (2 faces, earpiece, charger all comes in the retail box) for $59.99.
much much better than the $199.99 all the PacBell PCS stores had it for. I think the only thing to keep in mind is that if you cancel before 6 months, you must pay the place $150 dollars cancellation fee, on top of the $150 you pay to Pacbell for cancelling. But its such a good deal, why would you cancel?

All the other fees were the typical fees I would have had to pay at Pacbell, like activation...you also get 3 months of unlimited mobile to mobile if you are signing up for a new account.

If you are in the LA, Orange county area, their info is
ASAP Paging, 9938 Bolsa Ave, #110, Westminster, CA 92683

the guys name was Tony.
Oh, and they had the Nokia 8890 for 300 bucks.

For those that dont want to drive to Westminster and are local to Alhambra/ Monterey Park/ Temple City. Same Pac bell plan as above but you get the 8290 phone and accesories for 45 otd. (tax included.

Here is the link for all the pertinent information.

In regards to the internal antenna, I have pretty good reception and do not see it being a problem versus the phones with external antennas. The real problem is with the service not being strong in certain areas in general.

hey guys,
8260 DOES NOT the quick change face plate (unlike 8290 or 8210). So, if you get it from buy.com, you're stuck with red face plate UNLESS you go to local store and change it (void warrantee)
