My story:
I finally make the w2k and the w98 boxes work wth the drivers, and gave them each a ip.
The linksys utility sees the other pc, but a ping command goes into timeout. And after about 5 min every single stinkin time the 2k box loses the signal.....

ok, folks, here's what I've found out about the sku being "invalid". Not all Ofice Depot's are the same. Some stores have access to a whole other world of products that some stores don't. Some are considered "technology" stores and some are just regular OD. This was explained to me by an Asst. Manager at one of my local locations. It seems that out of the three stores in my area, only one is a "technology" store, and the other two cannot even have these "technology" products transferred in from other locations. Hence, the SKU for the network kit IS invalid, depending on the store. Just FYI...

The OD in Spring field NJ has 2 left. I just bought one. It seems the sygate softwareis only a trail verion, limiting transfer. Does anyone know anyway around this - either by using different software or did I miss the serialz # on the packaging??

Just picked up yesterday from a store in Omaha. Works great! I did
find a serial number in the package for Sygate. It was on a little tiny sticker that wasn't attached to anything inside the box.

Since you are entitled to run SyGate, and may have lost the serial # - there are serial # generators on the warez sites for this.

JesseKnows (and is very happy with SyGate 3.1)

Whatever you guys do, DON'T use the emergency recovery utility to unistall from W2k.

Use the uninstall from the start/warplink menu.

After many frustated trys I thought that maybe by using the emergency program (warplinker2k.exe) I could get rid of all the entries and start fresh.

Well, it got rid all right.... of all my network entries!!! Then I tried to shut down and it just hung...hung...hung...hung, you know the case. So tired of waiting I pressed the reset button. PUFF!!! My system as I knew it was gone. Many important files got corrupted and I can't boot into w2k anymore.

I'm still thinking on what's the best way to install my backup, but I'm soooo pissed off that I can't even sit down to do it.

MutherFockers jackasses device driver programmers from Ace!!! They should be all hung by their balls... or tities if that's the case

Don't use Sygate (I can never get it to work)...or go through the trouble of getting a serial from warez sites...

Just use AnalogX Proxy...it was painless and plus, it's free.

How can I get it to see the other computers on my network?

It does see my server fine but does not see my other computers on my ethernet network. Can I somehow bind my PCI ethernet card to the USB wireless device in Win98-SE? If not Win98-SE, how about in Win2k-Pro?

Overall, I'm impressed with the device. Installed pretty easy in Win98 and Win2k-Pro and has been pretty reliable. Nice deal.

what does the piece of paper with the serial number look like? is it an actual sticker or on the back on some manual?

also, does anyone have or know where to get the pcmcia warplink card for a reasonable price? i'd be willing to trade my 2nd usb unit, since it is a little bulky when carrying my laptop around the house.

thanks

chutz 123 - I'd do a litt;e more checking before you swap for a pcmcia version for your notebook. Chances are that the unit itself is the same, just uses a pcmcia card instead of a usb plug on the end of the cable for conecting to your notebook.

1- prontospyder, thanks for reminding me of AnalogX's proxy. I had dlded it a while ago but forgot all about it.

2- Skip, you can try binding it but be careful, do a back up first. Better yet, before you try how about you telling us step-by-step how you installed this darn thing on W2k?

3- clutz123, the piece of paper is a little sticker. It just falls off the package, and if it doesn't fall face up you will think it's trash. Looks like they added it up at the very end, like, OPS! we forgot the serial. Just like they did with the drivers, OPS! we forgot to test it....

Sorry, I'm still very angry. So much wasted time. It would've been better buying the Linksys 802.11b for $300. ONE DAY I'll learn...

Just wanted to let everybody know that............... my W2k is fixed. Thanks to that lovely feature "last know good whatever".

I tried the emergency recovery to no avail. I tried to install the back thru the network but W98 didn't help. So I gave up and tried the easiest alternative and I'm back to normal.

Not that I think that anybody cares, but since I was ranting before I thought I owed some nice words to the world.

Now instead of a backup, I'll do a literal copy of the whole drive before I attempt to mess with Warplink's warped setup.

I'm sorry you had such a hard time WW, but for the record, I intalled on two machines in about twenty minutes with no problems. It detected my @home cable connection and shares it at a solid 640kbps from anyware in my house. All for $29.95. Amazing. BTW, both the box, and the web site have a list of supported OS's and Win2K is not one of them. Yes I know it's based on NT4.0 but it is not the same thing. The linksys stuff costs TEN times as much. Any way you slice it, as long as you are using supported systems, this is a great deal. Good luck

Ok I found one of these and picked it up. Haven't installed it yet but, can it be setup to see the wired lan that is connected to one of the computers? Would be nice.

line of sight is best, but it's 2.4 GHz technology, like telephones, so it works through walls, etc. data rate suffers as you move away though.

big fuss- that's a good idea, i did think the unit was a little too light to need that whole big module. i am not at home right now, but has anyone tried to take apart the thing to see if it's really just a tiny little board? i'll be willing to make a makeshift case or maybe simply just velcro it to my laptop. might even improve performance

Zambonni, I might have a gremlin in my machine, but your pics only show half way. Is that just me? I tried saving it and when it got to 61k out of 151k the download just ended

djcarr, I believe that w2k is not supported by this pos, but it is very misleading of them to offer drivers for W2k on their website

And yes the Linksys costs $300 bucks, but I've spent easily over 10 hours on this, and my time is worth more than $30/hour. Or at least I like to think so

Only one out of four machines I tried had an easy and fast installation :|

Those were my pics. I cropped them and reloaded them. They are smaller now. These things are cool.

Sorry for your pain WoundedWallet, at least now I will think twice before trying to install this after I get a Win2k machine. If i can ever get it to install.....

Thanks Zambonni and Branded, whosever pics and for posting them. I think I'll go ghetto and sandwich the board between to pieces of cardboard and some velcro. too bad the usb cord is a little thick/long.

Win2k Install - I did not do anything special for my installation. I just downloaded the Win2k files from the website and did the install. No problems, except I had to uninstall my AllAboard internet sharing software first.

I'm going to try binding the cards on my server in the morning. It will be killer if it works.

I will do an updated Drive Image of my C drive first in case something gets screwed up. Drive Image will get back in operation in about 3 minutes if something goes wrong.
