well, i finally got around to installing mine.
win98se machine to win98se (a hacked iopener).

connection is there, but it is not perfect.
i can surf web fine, listen to streamed winamp shoutcasts, check email.
i can't listen to mp3s over lan from other machine, transfer large files.

I have some tweaking to do. try different mtu settings, etc.

so, my opinion so far: OK, but needs some work.
good buy for $30

Just finished setting mine up under Windows ME and 98SE. Currently typing this from the wireless rig. Windows ME is host, 98SE is client. Set up NetBEUI for file sharing, and ICS for Internet Access. Windows ME was a little tricky as the "home" network setting defaults to xxcomputernamexx.mshome.net no matter what "shared" domain is set for. So, after that little hurdle, everything is up and running.

If anyone with 98 settings are having difficulty setting up, post here and I'm sure we can help.

Wow... guess I got lucky.

I installed these to 2 machines (Win 98 and Me), enabled file and printer sharing, added some protocols (NetBEUI and IPX) and that was it. A network. Easy.

Too bas it's the slowest darn thing I've ever seen. Took 4 minutes to transfer 1.8mb.

I found another of these today at OD, but they have now put the price back up to $99! The one they had did not even have a box, which did not make sense since they don't put these out for display. I talked to the manager, and even showed her my receipt for the one I did find about a week ago, but she still would not give it to me for that. The computer even still has it as a non-restockable item. I was pissed.

I was doing the rounds at my OD and noticed the Acer box right next to all the LinkSys stuff. I hadn't noticed it there during my previous 8 or so visits to the store in the past month. The name sounded very familiar. I opened my wallet, and sure enough, there was a little yellow stickie with ACER Warplink Wireless and the SKU jotted down. The SKU matched. I couldn't remember the exact context of why I wrote that name down, just that I had read it on this or FW forum or maybe on the IOpener or ePods forums. Nor could I remember how much it cost. The box was empty - it was just a display. I decided to be cool and just ask if it was in stock before asking how much it was. Yes it was in stock. Then I asked how much. $99.99. I asked them if it was possible that it was on clearance previously and was somehow returned to regular price. The manager said no. I bought it anyway, figuring I can always take it back.

Very easily found this thread by searching on acer and warp. Was very pleased to see the clearance price of $29.88, but now disappointed to see, after reading through a three page thread, that another has encountered the raised price. And my OD manager also told me it has been discontinued.

Also after reading this thread and of the trouble had by a good deal of the finders of this kit, I am skeptical that it is worth the trouble, But I will probably try it.

Any updates to above information would be appreciated - especially successful installs and trouble free operation, and why you think your install is successful, would be appreciated. I will be installing on one machine with Win2K and another with Win98SE. If it is advisable to have 98SE on both machines, I can do that. I will want to use file and print sharing, and share my servers internet connection, which is dial-up modem. Thanks.

After finding the second one of these, and having the Assit Manager tell me she would not sell it for any lower then the $99, I called their Corporate Office. Talked with a very nice person who did some searching and he could only find about 5 of these in the whole US. 2 are in Philadelphia, but that store would also not budge on the new higher price. He called and talked with the store I was dealing with and they would not do it either. He finished by giving me the name and phone number for the District Manager for this area and told me to call him the next morning. Before I could even call, the manager from the store called me and said the Acer was being held for me at the $29.88 price! I don't know what happened, but I did not argue. I just went in and bought it.

but jolottashakn, looks like people on Win98SE have had little or no problems (no problems besides no serial number for sygate for me). Win2k seems problematic, esp. with acer's nonexistent tech support. Just so you know what to expect...

as for OD raising clearnace prices back up, I saw the same thing here in Louisiana on the Dazzle Studio SE firewire cards. I bought two at 29.88, now this week I see the price raised up to 69.88. Just FYI

I am using this on my win2k server it works great just download the software from the website. I just got the new version of SYGATE its better. I love this i am sharing my dsl with my friend and he lives 1 floor above me no problem always good connection this ROCKS.

I am selling an extra one i got because i need the oney college tuition is too much and dsl price went up too. sucks everythign is going up except WAGES.

thanks for the info on contacting OD corporate to get support in convincing a local store to offer a product at the same clearance price most other OD's offered it.

Do you, or anyone else, know what number, and possible a name for calling OD corporate. T'would be a blessing, indeed! My 14 day window for returning or price matching runs out on Thursday.
