Good call Evadman... also, if you want more proof on TD ill-repute, do a search in archived messages for Magicbrillo's "Hot Deal" posts... He is the same guy that responds to the ATer's allegations with the member name TigerDirectDeals... So ol' TD was getting some free advertising here for a while...

This router Sucks. I just read a bunch of reviews. Apparently actual transfer rates are bad and it is known to be incompatible with some equipment.

USR was aquired by 3com some years back. I certainly would count USR to be a big brand; however, I wouldn't let the name fool me into thinking they were good when they came to networking. Linksys and SMC are by far much more mature networking companies and have products that demonstrate their experience.

Those of us old fogey's probably remember the good of days when saying you owned a USR courier meant something. Now a days, they've been pretty silent with just a handful of networking products.

Having a friend in need of a wifi router, I decided to bite, but instead, I decided to buy locally and test it out first. The router does look cheap, but I personally like it's stylings.

The interface is duplicated from their website and modified to work with the router(Kinda cheesy and cheap way to go IMHO).

Performance and range I found to be pretty good, comparable if not better than more established brands. I do want to point out there is no SPI so that's probably why it performs so much better.(SPI = Stateful Packet Inspection).

The Wifi security is far from being secure. Although major companies like microsoft, netgear, and many others have recognized WPA as a security standard, USR claims they are waiting for ratification. As far as I know, WPA has been a standardized for quite some time. The only thing pending ratification is the 802.11i spec which is overdue at this point. If you are concerned about wifi security, don't go WEP.

If you need a cheap router and don't care about security, this is a good deal. Of course the idea of buying from tigerdirect seems risky to me.

Good deal find, good product on paper, bad product in practice. USR in my opinion is still new to the networking arena and when you use as many different routers as I have, it's painfully obvious how much firmware development this router needs. By far it is nicer than buying a generic product.

Just my two cents.

Does making it a "turbo" router really make a difference? My lappy wireless "g" but i'm assuming it can not send and recieve 100mb/s . Whats the point of turbo mode?

I have this router and it kicks ass.
I didn't buy it through Tiger Direct but through another internet vendor like months back.

Definitely easy to set up and get up and running

The router definitely was easy to setup. Using cable service, it was essentially plug and play, although I wouldn't leave the router in it's default configuration. The wifi portion by default is setup with no encryption and no authentication required to allow anyone with a wifi card to connect. This was left this way to allow a person with only a wifi card to connect to the router and configure it. Of course if you have DSL, you may need to configure login information in the router to connect to your ISP.

The turbo mode I didn't get to play with because that would have required a USR turbo wifi card to use it. As with all technologies that exceed 54Mbps(ie. extreme g, turbo, etc), you end up having to use proprietary protocols and compressions which equates to having to use only their hardware. Interoperability between turbo g hardware tends to be sketchy if at all possible.

If the router had a miniPCI inside, I wouldn't know since I didn't bother cracking it open(I wasn't intent on keeping it). With this router, I certainly would doubt it since cost seems to be the priority. Adding a miniPCI bus on the pcb would add unneccesary cost.

I don't really need a wireless router, I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind

1. Why does SPI slow you down? I don't want any slow down, even if it means more security. There isn't much on my PC that needs securing.

2. Can you recommend a good wired router. Really solid and geared for gaming at a decent price? The biggest concerns are great/easy configurability and speed. I need good pings.

Thanks

I would rather have a US robotics product than linksys or netgear etc.

Umm no. Linksys is now owned by Cisco and its no coincidence their gear is getting better than it was before.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM TIGER DIRECT EVER.

This may have been true previously, but I was surprised when I went to resellerratingings.

They have a 8.33 six-month rating out of a 7.41 overall !

Maybe they have done something to improve their previous reputation?
