Deals which involve rebates are warm at best because they take so much time to be issued and they are a risk. Deals involving MSN dollars does not mean you get the MSN bucks back... it means you have to buy something else with that cash, whether you want to or not...

Deals involving coupons or instant rebates are HOT. Deals requiring no coupons are even HOTTER.

The only time when a rebate deal is worth it is if your up-front costs are minimal anyway to cover all bases. 5 friggin' rebates for hundreds of dollars in rebate checks is just crazy, not hot...

Come on people! Are the deals these days so crappy that the bar has been lowered?

This thread defines irony.

I guess that the bar has been lowered. Although I prefer not to deal with rebates, I still consider them to be deals. I have had good luck with rebates, but then again I track them very welll. I enjoy the checks when they arive. Don't partake if you don't want to, it's your choice.

And you are?

I know you aren't a newbie from your Joined date, but you also have not been an active participant. How many Hot Deals have you posted?

It's not necessary for every member to post a hot deal to comment on the lack of quality deals lately...

No, but it is necessary to only post Hot Deal threads (which this isn't) in the Hot Deals Forum.

If you don't want to take part in deals involving rebates, that's your prerogative. Doesn't mean that other members aren't up for it. I've sent in maybe 40-50 rebates and I've received every one. Some required a phone call or a resubmission but I got the money in the end. To me the risk has always payed off and I look forward to saving more money in the near future.

It also isn't hard to understand that AT LEAST 4%(1/25) of your posts have been a criticism rather than a contribution.

You owe us one to raise the bar- FIND US A HOT DEAL!

...

and I demand deals to posted where I walk away with money in my hand, dammit! And hey, I am not talking about 5 bucks. Post the deals where I get like 50 bucks or better yet - 75 bucks! Oops, got to go, appointment to test-drive yet another Ford and then I have to open another bank account...

if you could read, you'd realize that what i was criticizing wasn't the size of the deal.. it was criticizing the padding with rebates (sometimes 5 rebates for 1 product) and msn "dollars" just to become a deal...

You realize that the message board itself has an excellent mechanism in place for filtering out non-hot deals. If no one replies to a thread, it drops to the bottom. So, where there's interest, things stay at the top. Who are you to tell people what they should or shouldn't be interested in? If you're not interested in a deal, don't post anything about it, and let it drop.

And if your time is really so precious, maybe you shouldn't be reading a hot-deals board anyway. Surely you could be out discovering a new gene or building a suspension bridge or something truly worthwhile.

I don't know what you were smoking, but at hot deals has saved my lots of money. I agree with you that rebates are nuisance, but they are the necessary drawbacks to getting great deals. through at hot deals, i got a 40gb 7200rpm hdd for $20, samsung pc2700 ram for $25, various dvds for super low prices, pc2100 ram for - $15, and many others and all thanks to this forum.

If a deal involving a rebate was not a hot deal then nobody would be posting on those threads and nobody would be taking advantage of deals and posting that they just did, leave alone thanking the original poster for posting the deal. The careful consumer can read through these deals and decide for themselves what constitutes an acceptable risk for them.

What did you want achieve by your posting? Did you want all the deals involving rebates to no longer be posted here? Maybe you want a filter to block out all deals involving a rebate? Try writing to the Anandtech mods to enable that sort of capability for this thread.
