Dell 1400SC

A 73GB SCSI III alone goes for at least $375 on PriceWatch

Somehow, I doubt Dell is going to double the HD to 73GB when selecting the 36GB special that is being offered at the 18GB price.

Just seems like doubling twice.

Good luck to those who give it a shot!

hmmm, i know why--you didn't get the 73GB hard drive. you actually got the 36GB->

1st Hard Drive (All drives must match for RAID): Special Offer: 36GB for the price of 18GB (10K RPM) 36GB10S [461-2022]

I was able to get it to $860. Make sure you don;t choose a primary controller (for hard drives), no OS, and the "1Yr Onsite Labor + 1Yr Parts Delivery + 1Yr Technical Support " service option.

Yes, but I selected that option for both HDs, so you are getting 72 GB of HD space for $860

As with other servers:

... Integrated ATI-Rage XL controller with 4MB of SDRAM (not upgradeable) ...

I guess this is not a gamer's wet dream.

<< With $1358, I got 4X 36G 10k rpm SCSI Server !!!
holy...
>>

I guess you could do that :Q

But I was looking at a more pragmatic approach!

It would be a nice system though!

Configure EXACTLY like neovan did in original post, but where he added the 2nd 36gb scsi hard drive, just leave it at no extra hard drives.

Comes up $611 with free shipping.

I didn't notice...does this have an agp slot? This would be a nice desktop with dual P3's if you could add an agp card.

They cut the price on Win2kserver by about half, and took another couple hundred off the price.

does Dell make any money anymore, or do they just pay to have people get systems/parts/screws from them?

nice systems, plop a v5 5500 pci in there and maybe? well, maybe not but still, this is off topic, but i believe dell makes their money off of larger consumers like large businesses and possibly off of warranties. they've also recently expanded into networking and i wouldn't be surprised to see them buy up someone and go into consulting..(hmm, think hp-compaq only better)

You guys trying to turn Servers into Desktop Gawd Boxes are looking up the wrong tree. The biggest advantages to these inexpensive Servers is their PSU, Onboard options and dual CPU support.

I'm torn as to whether I not I want this server. It would be mighty fast and I know I can create my own dual AMD server, but I don't think I can build it for less than $661.
