The only thing hot about a Dell is the temperature of the Intel chip inside of it. If you like poor quality systems, dreadful tech support, and have a desire to replace your system is 366 days, by all means buy this system!

I just don't get it. Everyoen says Compaq, Dell and Gateway have bad support. So if you don't want a computer what are your options?

Don't get me wrong, I like Dells. It's just that if you happen to need tech support, it's horrible. My 2001FP died last night and I literally spent 4 hours on the phone between last night and this morning.

I don't know too much about current parts. Is the deal I posted decent? My old dell is starting to worry me.

If that's the 19" LCD for free it's a good deal. You will want 1gb ram and something besides the CDROM. The monitor is analog, but it's not a bad monitor at all.

BTW....I've had 3 Dells (NB and DTs) and have not had a problem. I agree about the level 1 tech support. The sad part is Dell is constantly rated higher than the other vendors for Support. Go figure.

I was reading on cnet.com that most people do not need to spend the money to upgrade to a digital lcd monitor becuase it is hard to tell the difference becuase moniotrs have gotten so good.

I planned on getting the dual drives.

I bought two 5150's when they were on offer recently, their support does suck, hd died, spent 1 1/2 hours using the dell chat system, guy could not understand that if the hard drive makes a screeching noise you can hear the other side of the house, that's bad

Of course, that's not taking into account that older Dells may have been made better.

May have been? They definitely *were* built better. Much much better. Today's Dell PC is not the same as a Dell PC from 5 or 6 years ago. My Dell Dimension which was purchased back in March 1999 is still runnng fine. Everything's original except for the HDD (upgrade) and the GPU (upgrade).

When I did have problems I never had to wait on hold for more than 5 minutes. And when I had a problem with the Dell monitor about a year after I purchased it, I called Dell and after talking to their tech guy for about 3 minutes he determined that it was bad and that they were going to send out a new one in a couple of days.

The last time I had to call Dell, I was on hold for over 20 minutes and I could barely understand the guy (India?). Not only that, but now they seem to follow these stupid scripts instead of actually helping you. Not so when I had to get my monitor replaced.

I would not buy a Dell unless the price was really really good.

Seriously I dont understand all of you guys with your tech support or computer related problems. You bash 3 of the leading brands for support and or bad design. I seriously doubt that the average person puts as much R&D into their self built computer.

On another note If I ever purchased a computer from one of these companies I would see no reason to ever need tech support. I mean seriously what are all these problems people are having that they need to call a tech support line. I really dont understand this coming from people on this site who seem to be fairly knowledgable when it comes to computers. I guess what Im getting at is that I have never ran into a problem or question that I couldn't figure out myself.

I bought a Dell Inspiron laptop for my girlfriend for Chirstmas and it really is a great computer. Of course I never had to call tech support to figure out how to turn up the volume.

tech support aside, this is not a good deal just based upon the price. You can build a similar system for less.

yes the tech support sucks ass with their offshored support people (but for me dell chat has been great) dells are great for people who don't build their own systems or don't have time to build it.
i used to build rigs for family, now they come to me i just tell them buy a dell, its just not worth it. now even i just buy dells, i actually just bought 2 XPS200 from the outlet for a home testing multi-tier server environment. where am i gonna find the time to build 2 little machines and then do my actual server install and testing? it will be 2008 by then.

enough with the bashing and threadcrapping. i for one applaud the OP for trying to keep the hot deals forum alive.
