i've never had a bad experience with the tech support

i always use the online chat system, get my issue sorted within 30 minutes

had a dvdrw replaced (wanted phillips brand instead), os disks sent, and heatsink fan replaced (lot of noise)

they even send over a technician to replace the parts if necessary

On another note If I ever purchased a computer from one of these companies I would see no reason to ever need tech support. I mean seriously what are all these problems people are having that they need to call a tech support line. I really dont understand this coming from people on this site who seem to be fairly knowledgable when it comes to computers. I guess what Im getting at is that I have never ran into a problem or question that I couldn't figure out myself.

I bought a Dell Inspiron laptop for my girlfriend for Chirstmas and it really is a great computer. Of course I never had to call tech support to figure out how to turn up the volume.

It's not that I (we?) don't know how to diagnose a problem. It has to do with trying to get a replacement part (e.g. RAM, HDD, Motherboard, etc.). Can't speak about other peoples experiences, but the last time I spoke to a Dell tech it wasn't a good experience.

I think it must all have to do with your luck of the draw on which tech you talk to. I have to talk to them all too often, and am treated like a kindergardener. On the other hand, customers for which I simply show up and replace hardware for on Dell systems always praise the excellent tech support. Maybe it has something to do with the warranty that they purchased and the subsequent tech departments they get forwarded to. I don't know.

I'm not sure what it could be. It seems that people either get great support or very poor support (and it has nothing to do with outsourcing).

I've only dealt with Dell within the last two years, and have yet to have a poor experience dealing with them. I've talked to people in India, I've talked to people in the U.S., I've dealt with many different divisions (Home, Small Business, Education), and many different people through many different means (over the phone, e-mail, chatting, etc.), and always I've gotten good service and support.

I can't comment on the quality of the systems in the long run, but the ones I've used have been pretty good quality, but I've only had them for about a year at the most. When doing tech support/computer repair we had a lot of Dell systems (as well as other brands like Compaq, etc, but Dells were the largest share, because of the licensing agreement they have with the school), but 9.5/10 of the time it was user error and not anything wrong with the computer itself.

After working in the field, I honestly have to say that I wonder how much of it is the attitude of the customer. It can make all the difference in the world.

a quick price cheak

Asus A8n5x
3800 X2
corsair 512
7800GS
rosewell 19" lcd
WD 80GB Serial ATA150
Nec dvd burner
XP home
Antec sonata II

from just newegg after shipping and rebate $1,050 not a fair comparison did not sacrifice for much. so $1,050 vs $750 or more depending on tax and shiping. tuff call when the ladder is 100% upgradeable and great warranties with wonderful customer support(o and you can sell off your parts when you upgrade to anandtechers). If you can right it off when you file your taxes i would go with the more expensive one.

Everyone who is citing good Dell experience has been talking about older systems.
Dell systems used to have much higher quality (2 years + ago) and their support used to be vastly better - and really what distinguished Dell. They have been cutting costs on parts & support for a while now. NEW Dell computers are not as good. Current Dell support is not as good.
That's the story. The people asking what the alternatives are make a good point. Who does offer premium support now? Apple usually gets the highest ratings, but not everyone wants to pay that premium or use Mac OS.
I don't think there are a lot of good alternatives. Maybe Lenovo?

I've had a 9100 dual core since last August. I'm happy with it. It's quiet, very well designed, built reasonably well and priced much, much cheaper than I could have built it.

I've built at least 75 computers on my job and I'm bored to death with that. The Dell boots and runs. It's fast, and it doesn't slow down when you have a lot going on. The jacks all work. It doesn't crash, ever. The cabling inside is incredibly neat and well laid out. I can't overclock it, so I don't have the satisfaction of knowing I'm running the SAME BORING OS AS THE OTHER 95% OF COMPUTERS IN THE WORLD a few percent faster. It has a huge beautifully made heatsink about which I do not think at all. It is remarkable how boring things like heat sinks and memory timings are when you don't overclock. I did have to shockmount the drives to get it as quiet as I wanted - something which took all of 5 minutes.

It came with a wonderfully bright and sharp 19" LCD monitor which I'm told isn't very good for gaming. Having never used an LCD that was worth a damn for gaming I'm sure that's true.

Yes, Dell tech support sucks. Pretty much every major computer/telecom company's tech support sucks. I didn't buy it for the support - I AM tech support - but I can see how that would be very frustrating for the average person. Oh well, not my problem.

In any case I do think this is a good deal. Obviously you're gonna want more RAM, and if you're a gamer that video card will be laughable. But on the whole it's an excellent platform for the money.

I've had my dell xps for 2yrs now and it's been problem free. I use it to capture and edit video, so it gets worked very hard. I also have a dell 8400 which I've had for one year. I've had to contact dell support twice due to bad dvd burners, and both times they simply overnighted a new burner to me, and I sent them the old one. Last time I simply emailed them that I had a bad drive, and they asked no questions. Simply sent me a new drive. I use this pc for video editing as well with no problems.
